GMing new game - epic tale, rp/lore focused - 3.5 system, time flexible

1421390865

Edited 1421553494
So I had been working on a huge story for a new game for some time (drawing inspiration from books and classic games). I dm’ed a few times before, and no longer being new I feel like I can finally create a successful campaign. I already wrote out the major plot points so there is an endgame for this tale already in the works. I also came to realise that the pc to gm ratio appears to be 100000:1, so I can take my time organising a party. I am looking for a very specific kind of player that will really enjoy this campaign and as such the application process will involve a bit of vetting. I won’t make you create a character sheet before even applying, I dislike spending that much time on something before even getting in. But I would like to know more about you as a player to see if you match the game, starting with players who like to read … enjoy! edit- LF a co-GM as well, details are here - co-GM link . BACKSTORY The year was AN 1000 (After Najrasi – prophet and bride of the Creator). It was the day of the Millenial World Fair. I remember that day well, the sun was setting on the ocean horizon, the water an ebullient orange, mixed with flakes of gold and auburn. The sun was warm, surprising for this time of year. The gentle embrace of light heated the sand to just the right temperature, like a grainy blanket. Representatives from every Kingdom across every land had arrived not a fortnight past, and now on the eve of the opening day, the capital city of the Kingdom of Neeyus was lit up like a clear night sky. You each received a parcel a few nights ago. Old man Jirard has summoned you yet again to his estate to reveal his latest invention, a teleporter if you can believe it! He plans on unveiling it at the fair but can't wait until then to show it off. But at least Jirard‘s son, your childhood friend, Tir will be there. And you know wherever Tir is, Princess Zorina is not far behind. Yes, the princess… wait, what was I talking about? Right, off we go, to Jirard’s! INTRODUCTION A lazy afternoon like any other… a seemingly normal fair will see you tossed into an epic adventure spanning across time. Get ready to fight not only for the survival of the present but also of the past and future in a tale that weaves events across millennia together into a story about a fight for civilisation itself. Explore settings ranging from futuristic dystopias to the middle ages to prehistoric times as you race across the strings of history alongside trusted (?) companions. --------------------------- This is a grand sweeping epic where the heroes struggle against many powerful forces. The world is filled with important lore and fascinating characters. The feel is gritty and brutal. Combat is the easiest answer but not always the best one. Stealth, intrigue, politics, manipulation and cunning are awarded, as is excellent roleplaying. Morality is never black and white and neither are your choices. Don’t expect the ‘good’ guys to be trustworthy pillars of justice and the ‘evil’ guys to be cartoony stereotypes. There are large personal and party roleplaying XP awards for non-combat options. LORE Lore will be a huge deal. I am creating many small handouts about backgrounds for new kingdoms/continents the party sees as well as key NPCs the party meets. They won't be essays, just small paragraphs. Furthermore, each character depending on their race and class will get extra information that they would know about an area. For example, an elf might know that there was an elf-gnome war in this land 200 years ago and their lore sheet would say the elves believe the gnomes started it because the gnomes coveted the southern elven territory with its beautiful hot springs, whereas the gnome's lore sheet would say that they believe the elves started it because the elves wanted the new steam boat gnomish technology. This I believe will give players much more context with which to rp. Class lore sheets, on the other hand, would contain different kinds of information, for example - fighters knowing where the best local smiths are, rogues knowing the names of the local underworld or black market guilds and maybe a few underworld contacts, divine casters knowing a bit about the local religions and locations of local orphanages, arcane casters knowing the best local wizarding schools and famous mages nearby etc. I expect players to read lore sheets and use them in the copious amounts of rp occurring heh... THE DM STYLE The focus is on the story. There might be an overall railroad track in this game. If you detest being railroaded at all, this game is NOT for you. There are plenty of sandbox open world do whatever you want games out there for you, this game is for those who want to play out an epic story. The choices you make along the way, which there are many, are your own, but there won’t be an overhaul of the entire story because I already wrote the main plot points into an epic tale that I believe players are going to truly enjoy. There is also not just one ending. However, you will not be able to abandon the main quest and become lazy pirates sipping mojitos or something. Imagine the game as more Legend of Zelda less Elder Scrolls. I tend to homebrew some stuff - usually banning op stuff, also some bosses and key npcs get homebrew abilities corresponding to the story. I also tend to go for good ‘production’ values - good maps, tokens that fit in, no white backgrounds, etc. I use dynamic lighting and api scripts as well to create a better experience for players. - Brief digression to discuss a requirement to apply - Type a number 2 at the start of your application below to ensure you read THE ROLEPLAYING SYSTEM Sometimes rp can lead to better item/exp awards than actual combat. Skill rolls also involve a lot of rp. Sometimes the rp is more important than the roll itself. Skills such as diplo, bluff, intimidate, gather info, sense motive, etc need to be rp’d out. The roll in combination with the rp is used to determine success. Certain racial and class abilities also need to be rp’d out (to be determined after classes are chosen). ABOUT THE SESSIONS Timing is yet to be finalised. My timezone is est so I am thinking either tu or th evening anytime or anytime later on Saturday or anytime at all on Sunday. The sessions are run using a combination of Roll20 and Skype and tend to last quite a while. ROLES TO BE FILLED I require that party member roles do not overlap. In my gaming experience, this leads to less hurt feeling and more individual enjoyment when each person has something to do. That being written, there should be no single party face as everyone should be allowed to rp as it is so important to this game. As skills can be rp’d out for massive bonuses, you don’t need to be a skill monkey to talk in a negotiation. The general roles are – frontliner tank, melee damage, ranged damage, blaster, battlefield controller, buffer or debuffer, healer, other support, stealth/scout. CHARACTER CREATION Your initial character is built with normal point buy of 32. Starting at level 4. However, until you are accepted please do not focus on character sheets as they are way less important than the rest. You should craft a small paragraph about your personality as well. This can include backstory to explain your personality but for the most part I am not interested in PC backstory, only their present personality/goals/dreams. Rest of creation rules – gold, hp, etc – will be outlined later. HOW DO YOU JOIN/REQUIREMENTS? You must answer the following info and then I can friend you on skype for a short interview. After this you are invited and can submit a character sheet. Not reading all the above info or answering the following info is likely to lead to a rejection for the game. - Name - Class - no limits except as outlined in the ban list below - Race, Limited to base races - Humans, Elves, Dwarves, Gnomes, Orcs, Halflings, Half-Elf, Half-Orc - others to be discussed to see if they would fit in. - General Concept/personality - 1-2 sentences for now - Confirm you have skype and that the times work for you. - Must be familiar with 3.5, no new players sorry! - No character sheet required yet. - Confirm you are okay to commit to be a regular, the game could last a while - miss 2 unexplained sessions and you are replaced. Of course I know stuff gets in the way and that is okay as long as you say so beforehand - but the game time should generally be free without conflicts. - 18 and over - skype username -Tell my why you like lore and rp and stories, specifically what do you do ingame to show interest and what do you want out of the game -What is the purpose of an npc BAN LIST – list subject to expansion - I included this here so you can see what I meant when I wrote I tend to ban stuffs and also because the misc. bans are very crucial to how the game works, SEE THE MISC. SECTION BELOW Classes - Artificer - spell to power erudite - thrallherd Feats - Item Familiar - Leadership or any similar – dragon cohort for example - arcane thesis - dragonfire inspiration Items - Winged Mask - Any item with continuous fast healing Spells - Any spell below level 7 with no max caster level Books – all races/classes/items/spells/etc are banned from the following - dragon mag - any - savage species Misc - IMPORTANT - No Item creation/crafting – gonna need to get items the old rpg way ... loot and npc vendors - all use of spells/powers or racial/class abilities outside of combat is banned. That’s right unless you see an initiative tracker, don’t get excited. So long ‘I got a spell for that’ wizards. This is done to get players to think about how to do stuff without charm/mind control/etc to get what they want and to increase roleplaying. - NO homebrew anything - I don’t feel I need to say this but no pun-puns or omnificers etc… So... phew that was long. I look forward to reading your apps and meeting you! Thanks for reading.

2 Very interested in this! So let me introduce myself as you requested: - Name: Evenus is my online synonym, i can tell you my real-life name over Skype - Class: I would really like to play a Binder/Arcane Caster class that later on becomes an Anima Mage (ToM Prestige Class). I have a backup idea if it seems too strong for you, so far i always have been rejected when asking to play an Anima Mage. - Race: Gnome. plain and simple. - General Concept/personality: He'd be curious to always learn new things, and even though he sees himself as a rational strategist, his curiosity will sometimes make him forget his logical approach to solutions. While he will be a character who bonds to people slowly, as soon as he opens himself to you he trusts you strongly and is a caring nice guy (same will go for Vestiges, he would have a favorite). Still, he doesnt really care that much about those that aren't close to him, so i plan on making him Chaotic Good. I won't mention his goal here cause spoilers for other potential players. - I have skype and a decent working mic and setup (no noises in the background and stuff) - Got 2 years of experience with 3.5. I have good experience with the game both statwise and rp-wise, and i like to have some min-maxing in my character build and combat, but i also heavily value story and rp. If there would be a flaw to mention, since most of the games i played weren't super strict concerning rules, i sometimes may make small mistakes, but i think it shouldn't impact the quality of the game. - I'm fine to commit to regular playtimes and i live in CET too - I'm 19 - I sent you my skype username over a private message - I like lore and rp because i'm a person who really just enjoys living another persons imagination while socializing, atleast in the case of Table-Top-RPGs. I've written huge worlds myself and at times like now, i also enjoy getting insight on other's stories while living them. I feel heroic when RPing and i usually tend to immerse heavily into well-written settings. Ingame, i usually just am very interactive wit the world, i fantasize a lot into what the DM describes and i love to interact, especially if the DM puts a lot of work into things like individual NPCs. I want this game to make me live an epic story that i can interact with, i don't want the freedom of a sandbox, but i want to feel immersed and it shouldn't feel bland. - The purpose of an NPC is to make the world a breathing thing. NPCs should be unique and be described vivdly by the DM, this makes the game much more immersive in my opinion. Except for that, they help me interact with the world. No matter if they have relevant information i need or i just want a small chit-chat because my character is interested in an NPC in some aspect, i want to interact! Alright, here you go, i hope the result of my application has pleased you!
Wished this was Pathfinder, but anyway, this looks great!
2 - Name: Denis, but people call me Bear due to the way I sit on the ground (It's weird, I know) - Class: I'd like to play something like a Melee-focused Paladin or Knight - Race: I'm thinking Human fits best for this, maybe a Dwarf - General Concept/personality - Very loyal and lawful man, seeks justice for the ones weaker than him. Seeks the approval of his God/Godess/Order, and I'd probably add a twist to the character, like for example having him hate loss, and if he loses a duel or something, he'll assassinate the opponent by hiring an assassin or something. And yes, this goes against his alignment, but the voice inside his head is louder than the voice of reason, and he simply cannot contain this rage. Might come up with something better though - If we play on Tuesdays MAYBE Thursdays, it would work with me. I live in sweden, so GMT +1, and saturdays, I would have to skip some of those, due to real life stuff (Not every saturday, just one or two per month, so, Tue or Thu would be best for me :) ) PS. Indeed, skype name posted below, have a good mic, so no background noise should be heard. - I've got a couple sessions worth of experience when it comes to 3.5, but I learn fast if there's anything I don't know ( I know how most of the stuff works). - Yes, I can be a regular if we play on the days I stated above - See, here's a problem, I'm 16, 17 in march, but I don't have a crackly voice or anything, and I'm more mature than you'd think. You can ask Evenus if you need more reassuring, I've been in his campaigns before, and we've grown to be friends. - barbatron1 -I like roleplaying, because in ALL sorts of games, whether it's Table-Top RPGs, MMORPGs, just "normal" RPGs, I like the character progression, and not only leveling up, but also developing the characteristics of my character, seeing how he develops with the story, how different things make him react. And Lore is also a big part of this, since it makes me able to affect the outcomes of things, maybe even write history, and that affects a character bigtime. Seeing how a character starts off from being a simple fighter to being the most powerful knight, can be interesting, especially if there's an epic adventure in between. -The purpose of an NPC to me, is to make the world more interesting,to make it easier to delve deeper into the story. I myself love interacting with NPCs, whether it's bullshitting about their pregnant wife or getting information on the nearby goblin encampment. I suppose that was that, if you're wondering anything else about me, simply add me on skype and we can talk about that on there :)
Well at least you are honest heh. Let's talk on skype and see how it goes. App looks good :)

Name: Bryan but I prefer to go by my char name in sessions - Class - rogue (may cross fighter/invisable blade/master thrower) race: halfling- General Concept/personality - wisecracking somewhat cowardly but surprisingly dependable and charming easter to see thru play than described by words - I have a Skype. Skype address ziekhighwind@hotmail.com . did not see what times u had planned but I work part time so may be able to make it work - very familiar with 3.5, played for years - okay to commit just need to know the time frames to check for certain i can join. - age 25 - skype username: dastardly doo -lore and rp stories are important for setting the stage and creating a wonderful world you can be proud to call your other home. I'm a writer for fantasy and a small with my peeps at home so these are important to me because they are a part of who I am. The purpose of an npc is to make the world more real, colorful, and fun please pm me asap if I am in.
Oh a halfling rogue, reminds me of a certain comic character heh. Sent a friend request on skype.
2. - Name: Sami // Zelekendel - Class: Swashbuckler / Rogue - Race: Most likely human. - General Concept/personality - Outwardly a happy-go-lucky fellow, who does honestly believe in friendship and that every smile is worth a coin and a laugh a bundle, but deep down there's a keen intellect and a driving desire for prestige, power and wealth. Initially starting as the son of a business family out to branch out and expand the family business, he has no qualms about using it to rise high in both polite society and/ or the criminal underworld. - Times: I'm a Finn, at GMT+2 (7 hours ahead of EST), but can do weird times as the present life situation allows for it (for example I'm typing this at 5 am, though wouldn't want to go past 6am regularly. Should work well together with Denis. - I'm a 3.5 (and roleplaying overall) veteran, with several campaigns played and run since launch. - I'm a pretty firm committer, as long as I've made the decision to commit - I'm not the type who mysteriously fades out. - I'm 33, and have been playing (started with Runequest) since I was 9. - Skype: Zelekendel Sh - Who doesn't love a good story? From the early days of reading Dragonlance, LOTR or Shannara, and an interest in gaming overall, it was natural that I'd be a gamer and story lover for life. Roleplaying is about camaraderie, excitement and just plain having a fun time while engrossed in a story, to me. Talking and describing actions in character, to me, shows that the players are involved and interested in what's currently going on. -The purpose of an NPC is to be killed. Seriously, NPCs are there to enliven the game, to provide opportunities for the players to react to, roleplay and interact with. Well played NPCs with various interesting personalities, especially ones done in a colourful and lighthearted manner, are a personal favourite point of playing for me.

2 - Name: I usualy go by Mahou, due to my cross-dressing . Idea 1: - Class:: Im thinking on swordsage. - Race: I know its not the core classes, but i was thinking on warforged i can change though - General Concept/personality - Providence is a robot from one off the yet to be visited future world, who especialize in stealth and rocket punchs. It is very curious about "human"(as in humanoid not the race human) feelings and has a low understanding of then aswell as a low concept of self.Idea 1: Idea 2: - Class: Healer - Race: Gnome - General Concept/personality - Lily White is an ascetic with all loving compassion and love for all living. She is an envoir from the seelie council and thinks all have the right to experience the joy of life ( she would only be functional on majoritaly good party,) - Time: Saturdays, pretty much anytime, week days only at night after 6 GMT-2 - Skype: i will send though PM - Experience: I have 2 years experience i also have played with you before in the Land Left by the Ancients - Its pretty rare for me to miss a session and i am over 18. -I like RP cause its diferent from life. You get to be the same person every day you wake up, but on rp-fiction you can be someone else. -An NPC role is to populate the world and are anything else interactable that is not a player. In synthesis it is to be used as a plot device to make the world more interesting and add depth and interaction with the world.
Friended :) Talk to you on skype for the second app part.

2 - Name: Zack - Class & Race: I have two possible ideas for my character: Adohem, the human (Savage) Bard/Barbarian uses his archery and bard songs to good use, supporting his allies while still being a dangerous foe. Quick Background/Personality: Adohem was raised in spiritualistic tribal barbarian clans, where honor through battle is highly regarded. Restless and tired of the mundane battles of the barbarian clans, Adohem departs to the more "civilized" lands where he hopes to make make himself a legend. Tiax, the human? (race still in the air) Wizard/Cleric specializes in Summon Monster spells, and I'd have all of the monsters statistics ready to go. Some DMs don't like "monster spamming", so this may need discussed. Quick Background/Personality: Tiax is, well, a... troubled man. At the young age of 8 he started hearing voices, ones that only he could seem to hear. They whispered things to him incessantly, ranging from sound moralistic advice, to chaotic nonsense, to malevolent ideas. Now older, he still hasn't adapted very well with the voices, as he talks to them aloud, usually discussing/arguing about his next course of action. He is a schizophrenic. - Time: I'm in EST and I can play weekday afternoons/nights. My weekends are busy though. - Familiarity with 3.5: I have played/DM'ed countless hours of 3.5 edition D&D, both tabletop and now on Roll20 (maybe ~5 years?). I'm... pretty familiar hah. - Confirm to commit: I'm a very consistent player with a bit too much time on his hands during the week. If I do have to miss a session, I'd definitely let you know. Nothing is more frustrating than having players skip out on play sessions without a word. - Age: 22 - Skype username: zack.franks0 - Lore & RP: I've loved RPGs ever since my younger days of playing video games. I think my first RPG was Super Mario and the Seven Stars, and from there I loved the genre and branched off to other great games such as Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, and Deus Ex. I ended up playing tabletop RPGs at ~10 years old and loved those too. I just fall in love with the lore, story, and moral discussions involved with RPGs. They're just so much more fascinating to me than, say, a FPS deathmatch. What I want out of my games (like this one) is a good story, interesting discussions, and a relaxed playing environment. In-game, I try to flesh out my characters thoroughly -- (attempt to) speak with their voice, vividly describe their actions, and interact with the world in a manner appropriate to their personality. - Purpose of NPCs: To put it simply, an NPC is just another actor in the grand story that the DM is weaving. Their purpose is to add substance to the narrative, giving the PCs information, resources, and/or incentives to keep the main plot flowing smoothly. They are there, more or less, to influence the PCs in some way.
Are you still accepting players?
Yup, not making any decisions until I interview enough peoples, so apply away!
Quick edit- I included a new section above that might interest players - LORE Lore will be a huge deal.

"a number 2" - Name: Chris - Class: Dragonfire Adept (DFA) - Debuffer/Ranged Damage/Other Support - Race: Kobold (see below), or Human - General Concept/personality: I was hoping I might convince you to allow me to play a 6 year old dragonwrought kobold named Fiztle. I have always enjoyed the lore behind copper dragons, creatures of great power that spend their free time participating in jokes, pranks, and harmless fun. Being a dragonwrought kobold with the copper dragon heritage is the closest I can manage to actually being a copper dragon without taking a ECL7 copper wyrmling. Fiztle is a character concept that I have spent a couple years working on, trying to balance her enthusiasm and curiosity with her age and natural propensity for distraction. With Fiztle, I would attempt to create a character that does those things, without being overly powerful, or stealing the show. I would have a couple small requests for this character, if you were to allow it, to aid in the flavor of the character. I can give an expanded description of this in a private comment, if you are interested. If you prefer I stayed with human, I would make a man that admires copper dragons greatly, and has dedicated his life to becoming as much like a dragon as possible. He would help those weaker than himself, and will often play pranks on or joke with others, but he would also attempt to accumulate wealth over rank or prestige. Mechanically, I would play the DFA as a ranged damage/debuff/support. Entangling Exhalation would let me slow down opponents, and help my allies to hit them more accurately, and I would likely grab Draconic Aura with the Vigor aura from Dragon Shaman , to help keep the party alive. - Confirm you have skype and that the times work for you: Skype works well, I have a headset. I can make Saturdays work all day, and I have Sunday afternoon/evening available. Tuesdays are generally unavailable, and Thursdays I have occasional other responsibilities. - Must be familiar with 3.5: I have over 7 years experience working with D&D, mostly in 3.5 (but also with 5e), and I have spent a considerable amount of time reading through the various books. I am currently DMing an extended 3.5 campaign on Tuesday nights, and am a roll20 supporter (Dynamic Lighting is awesome!). Additionally, I have a fairly reasonable library of assets I am willing to share; tokens and tiles and the like that I have collected during my campaigns. - No character sheet required yet. - Confirm you are okay to commit to be a regular: I can commit to being a regular player, if the games happen on weekends. If I need to miss a session, you will definitely be the first to know, and I will advise you as soon as I become aware of a scheduling conflict. - 18 and over: I am 28 - skype username: cmembree -Tell my why you like lore and rp and stories, specifically what do you do ingame to show interest and what do you want out of the game: I enjoy reading fantasy novels (The Hobbit, The Name of the Wind, etc.), and playing RPG games, as it is a lot of fun to unfold stories. Lore is great for fleshing out understanding of the game's world, and deepens the immersion when playing. In game, I tend to make use of the /me command, and I would likely whisper all my rolls to the DM, so that the only visible things in the chat box are actions that my character takes, leaving the results up to the DM. ("Fiztle breathes a gout of acid at the bugbear!" "/w dm I do [[2d6]] points of damage, reflex save 14 for half"). This style of play increases the immersion in the world, in my opinion. Additionally, if playing Fiztle, I would likely have her speak in broken common, and have a poor time understanding simple human interactions. As for what I am looking for in the game, I am hoping to have a fun time, bring some amusement to the players and the DM without derailing the story, and have my character grow as naturally as possible. -What is the purpose of an npc: NPCs have a variety of purposes, depending on the game creator's needs. They can be throw-away characters that help flesh out a description of a location and add some depth to interactions in the game world, or they can be the DM's tools in the world to guide the players to a given location or deed. Tales of NPCs can help inspire the players, or warn them of dangers, or give clues to solve puzzles or quests. A DM can give an NPC a huge amount of backstory, that could take an entire campaign to unravel, if desired, and can inspire sympathy or ire for a villain, depending on how the DM wants the players see them. Additionally, a well made NPC can cause players to feel a range of emotions as they interact. NPCs can also provide moral guidelines for the players.
sent friend request ^ almost finished finalising the party so am going to be closing applications soon :)
applications are closed for now, thanks!
