I have a friend that is interested in giving Shadowrun a shot, too. No idea about 5E, but I own a lot of 4ed 20th material. Also, yes - don't expect to just find a perfect GM to run. After trying to do exalted, and getting better at managing some things, I've decided that games will either round-robin or there will be clearly defined, distribution of responsibilities at the table. There most definitely should be someone doing minutes or, at minimum, keeping a clear record of player goals/direction. I hate having to take hours to explain things every single session. With that being said, I'm a storyteller that loves to instigate immersion, and I like players that actually roleplay, and don't just crunch everything, make it a mechanical video game, and ask, "Did I kill everything yet?" Drama, being proactive, competence and characterization - all a melting pot of various gaming advice and philosophies. Fate Core helped me mature quite a bit last winter. I'm CST, and my friend is EST - he's probably rather new, and I've had mediocre experience with the system. Driven, enthusiastic players help, either way!
