I've been playing around with Roll20 (mostly to see how my characters look on other people's maps), and I have questions about the grid. #1 - Where is the option to change how diagonal movement is measured? #2 - Is there such thing as a hex grid?

GenKitty, Steve K., thank you both for simultaneously answering my (admittedly newbish) question. P.S.- I'm glad there's a measurement option that recognizes the Pythagorean Theorem. The guy GM'ing my game has us count every other diagonal movement as "two squares," which is surprisingly accurate (well within five feet). But still, I appreciate that Roll20 includes a tool so I don't need to fudge the math. Thanks for that, Roll20 Dev Team!

Welcome Kayla. I would suggest having a look on the LFG section and see if any 5e games listed sound appealing and or create your own listing. Cheers

Just thought I would throw up an Italian to English translation for anyone interested. Vince said: Marcix said: Italian maaa no ..? You can also drag images from your computer to roll20 when you create a custom deck of cards. You can PM me if you need more help. Hello! I learned about roll20 a couple years ago, but I wasn't able to convince my group to switch to online gaming. After about 18 months of very sporadic games they have finally agreed to give it a shot. I just have one question so far. I've joined the GM Academy which is great. However, the forums are reasonably active. Is there a way to unsubscribe from the forum posts? It isn't a big deal, but I would prefer to only get notifications about games I'm running. Thanks, Eric
Thanks alot! The OP explained the deal, was a bit unsure about how things worked around here, I am an old rpg vet, usually I was the GM since and I quote from one in my group "The gm characters you play feel so alive that once I learn their personality I know how they will react before they do it!" As a GM I strive to never just create a random villian (or hero if its an evil campaign!) I want my characters to have a reason! Why do they act the way they do? No one gets out of bed thinking "Muhahaha! I feel so evil today! What bad deeds will I do today?!" Same as a player, for me character creation isnt a thing to take lightly. I need to decide on personality, gender, way of thinking ect ect. As I think some of you can guess I done alot of "social rpg" in which there are no die rolls, you merely write down your character and how he/she works and after that its all about how you act. My two favorite games I ran was a classic "murder in a mansion, who is the killer?" scenario and "You are an average Joe, meeting other random strangers, escape this zombie outbreak!" :P

To keep it short, I'm a new player and I'm looking to join a campaign. I've never played a tabletop RPG but I've played many by way of video games. Long version... Hello everyone. RPG's are my favorite type of game to play but the only ones I've played are via video games over the years. From Zelda in the late 80's to Skyrim, I've gotten lost in the games and lost days at a time playing them. I've never been fortunate enough to be a part of a tabletop RPG and am looking to see how it is. I've been watching some games on YouTube over the past few weeks and have been looking over the 5e Players Handbook. It's the only place I've thought to start so...I have an idea of how the progression of the game works but I'm gonna be fuzzy on a few things just starting out. I'm looking into joining in a campaign for new players and I'm thinking a one-shot game is a good first game. I will keep searching for Campaigns to join while I work on a character and hope to meet some of you soon.
....just because I'm looking at the 5e Players Handbook doesn't mean that's the only thing I'm wanting to play. Just thought I would mention that. The "RPG" part is more important than the rule set.

Hello Robert C. You would probably get more responses if you made that post in the Looking for Group forum. This is mostly for a brief question about how to use roll20 or a beginners where to look for something question. Specific questions are usually recommended their own thread. Your post is more in line with a player looking for a group to join than asking for guidance on how to use or find something in roll0. Good luck and happy gaming.
Oh, sorry about that. Thanks

Hiya, my names Paul. Relatively inexperienced table-top player but im always hyped to play. I just recently found that playing online was even a thing. My honest question (and i hope not an offensive one) is how friendly is the community here? Id love to meet and roleplay with strange new people, but i dont know if my "casual" background will leave me in a position of being seen as an inconvenience or lead to being spit on by the community in general. Im sure there are extremes on both ends of the spectrum, but in general what can i expect? Thank you in advance.
So, I'm trying to figure out the wonderul Macro roll system. And it appears that the Greater Than and Less Than is broken. It's broken both on the demonstrative portion on the wiki and inside a game. On the Wiki it says that its invalid input. In a game it says: Could not determine result type of: [{"type":"M","expr":1},{"type":"C","text":"d100&lt;=50"}] ==&gt;&gt; Tried to roll /roll 1d100&lt;=50 Could not determine result type of: [{"type":"M","expr":1},{"type":"C","text":"d100&gt;=50"}] ===&gt;&gt; Tried to roll /roll 1d100&gt;=50 This is a particular shame, as I am trying to set up various macros for an Eclipse Phase game, and its roll under or equal to than system.

Paul S , welcome to Roll20! I think you'll find a significant portion of the community welcoming to new players, you can even search for games that are specifically welcoming players new to the game system. Sometimes you'll see games posted in the directory & forum that are for experienced players. When in doubt, politely ask the GM if they're willing to take a newbie. Good luck with your gaming! James T , remove the = from your equation. For legacy reasons, &lt; and &gt; are the functional equivalent of &lt;= and &gt;=.

There are people that join here that have never played a rpg and only happened to see it being played on a youtube video. Everyone is welcomed here be it someone that has played D&D with the grandfather "Gary Gygax" himself as he created our hobby to a 10 yr old boy that saw a game being played on youtube (extremes but they do happen). Relax and go up to the first post (known as op or original post) and watch the videos if you haven't. They will cover most of the info you will want to know about like how some games are played but you know that probably and how to use roll20. Now there is a few things i should explain about the forums, there are several sections. If you have a specific question about something, post it in the Specific Forums, if you have a problem with something not working like an error or something not loading then post it in the Bugs & Technical forum. Take a look around, if you have questions then feel free to post them. We are always willing to help.

Well Paul, im relatively new too, but after a few games, they where all just out going people really. But sure there might be that one guy, doesn't make the whole community like that. Just relax and have a good time is really what you need to do.

Can you provide a screen shot of what you're seeing because I'm afraid I don't understand your issue. After you create a campaign, you can set a character sheet from the Campaign Settings menu. After going into the campaign you can create a new character from the journal. Inside the journal entry for the character will be a Bio & Info, Character Sheet, and Attributes & Abilities Tab. Any changes to the character should save and be reflected as Attributes on that tab, unless there is an error in the character sheet you're using. Another note, is that fields won't update and save to the server until you unselect them or hit the return key. <a href="https://wiki.roll20.net/Character_Sheets#Choosing_a_Character_Sheet" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.roll20.net/Character_Sheets#Choosing_a_Character_Sheet</a>
Hi! I'm new too and I want kill to murder some minions. Any help with this would be gratefully accepted. My work schedule is full-time third-shift, so 5 nights out of the week I will be unavailable from like 9 pm EST- 6 am. Can do it any time during the day most days, and will be down to rp with anyone in the world. I pretty much just adore DnD podcast and want to actually try my hand in this; I've been rping writing based rps on forums since 2005 so I think I can get the hang of this pretty quick. So yeah. Hello. Sly, you're going to have the best luck finding a game by using the LFG (Looking For Group) section of the site. You can find a link to it at the top of the page. Search for D&D games on the days and times that work best for you. Once you found games you're interested in, leave a join request on the game specific forums inside the LFG post.
I have not played a pen and paper rpg since the early 90's and I am really excitied to start again. With that being said i am also frightned to drag a game down with inexperience. I see on the look looking for a group section that most welcome new players, but what about first timers. When i did play it was starwars and ad&d2e but coc looks very interesting.

andy f , Welcome to Roll20! A new player is a new player, be it someone has never played any games, someone who hasn't played that system, or someone who has played a few sessions but is still shaky on the rules.
you can join my group also! <a href="https://app.roll20.net/join/713098/2bB5ow" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/join/713098/2bB5ow</a>
Looked at the LFG stuff, but interested in the opportunity to sit in as an observer to a group or join any groups for just the purpose of mucking with the environment and getting a feel for how it all fits together before getting committed to gaming and being a part of a group. Is there such a thing? I have zero time for this over the next couple weeks so just checking on this for now.
Hello all At the moment I'm using the "top down" figures as tokens which represent characters and monsters. However, my players would prefer to use a token which features their character portrait. So is there a way to cut part of the art they've chosen - the face obviously - and place it in a moveable token that looks like this:

Token Tool is a free program that you could use to make your own tokens similar to the one you posted. You could also use a program like GIMP , depending on your skill/experience with a graphics editor.

If you haven't already done so, I would suggest having a look in the newly updated LFG (Looking for Group) section. Use the Advanced option and search for a game using the "welcome new players". Look for a game that sounds appealing and communicate with the GM of the game and let them know your experience level, or lack there of, and what you are looking for in a game. Good luck. Cheers
