When I was using a dry erase board and a pen I could just say "There's a bunch of people milling about", and sure, you still can today on Roll20. But wouldn't it also be awesome to populate those maps with random passers by so you can quickly identify an NPC at the market stall, or have the Jester capering around the party as they visit the king? No one wants to blast off to adventure? Are you going to have to tie them to a chair and tape their eyelids open while constantly looping reruns of Flash Gordon on the screen in front of them?

The biggest issue with Dungeon Buddies is they are like tribbles, you let just one of them things on your map and pretty soon they are everywhere in your campaign.
