[Interest Check] Heroes vs Villains Campaign

January 26 (9 years ago)

Edited January 26 (9 years ago)
Hello. I'm looking to begin designing a campaign, which usually takes a few months, but I have several concepts in mind and would appreciate the opinion of the public. Also, if anyone is interested in joining in the future, please sound off and I'll do my best to keep tabs on everyone as the campaign comes together. The core concept is that there will be a party of 5 heroes and 5 villains. Each will have their own GM with their own Skype groups, but sharing the same Roll20 game. From time to time, based on the actions of the groups, they will work against each other and occasionally come into direct contact - ending in mass brawls. With this core concept, I have several settings and game systems to work with. Please let me know what sounds appealing.

#1 - X-MEN vs HELLIONS
System: Big Eyes Small Mouth (BESM/Silver Age Sentinels)
Concept: Hero Characters are young mutants of Emma Frost's Massachusetts Academy of the Gifted. When Frost's former organization, the Hellfire Club, was attacked its young apprentices vowed revenge - blaming Frost for the betrayal. Action will primarily take place in and around New York, from sabotage missions in bases to known-down, drag out fights in the streets of Manhattan.

#2 - PROJECT ROGUE II
System: Big Eyes Small Mouth (BESM/Silver Age Sentinels)
Concept: Similar to #1 but in a non-descript world, heroes are young defenders of truth and justice in a world threatened by the villains - ambitious young criminals looking to make their mark. Characters could be aliens, robots, mutants, science experiments, or any combination thereof. Characters work with or against local police, military, street gangs, and other organizations in their bid for control.

#3 - TARTARUS: WAR OF THE TITANS
System: Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition
Concept: After being sealed for centuries, the gates of Tartarus have shattered. Foul demons and vicious monsters have spilled across the surface of Helas, plunging the realm into chaos. Heroes are humans and Greek-themed races that have banded together to fight the darkness. Villains are agents of evil, whether born or conscripted. Tartarus will feature mass combat, large armies and political espionage on a grand scale.

#4 - FAYADOR
System: Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition
Concept: Similar to #1 but in a non-descript fantasy world, heroes and villains are standard fantasy fare. Elves, dwarves, gnomes, drow, goblins and more. Like Tartarus, it focuses heavily on mass combat and regional control. Persuading or eliminating kings, rallying or intimidating locals, securing trade routes, and other tactics can turn the tide of the war in your favor.

#5 - STAR WARS: DARK TIMES
System: Star Wars Saga Edition
Concept: Order 66 has been initiated. In one fell swoop, the newly-appointed Emperor Palpatine has wiped away the Old Republic and destroyed its supporters. In its place the Grand Army has become the Galactic Empire, and its billions of citizens Imperial subjects. Heroes are Jedi padawans, nobles, and rebels who defy the villains - an assembled troop of Imperial cadets. Though the galaxy is a vast place, there are few places the Rebels and Imperials will not clash.

PS: When you reply, also state your interest in either the Hero or Villain team.

I would be interested in #1 & #5

It sounds like a great idea! I would personally be interested in 1-4.

Teddy and Kevin, which team (Hero or Villain) do you think you'd want to be in for each game you referenced?
January 27 (9 years ago)
Depending on the time/day I could certainly be in for 1. Are we talking about the 80s X-Men/Hellions teams or the more recent incarnation?
January 27 (9 years ago)
It's its own timeline and universe, but modeled after the modern incarnation.

I'm actually thinking of tweaking #1, increasing the scale and stakes.

#1b - GENOSHA
System: Big Eyes Small Mouth (BESM/Silver Age Sentinels)
Background: The island of Genosha was a paradise for Homo Superior and a sanctuary for oppressed mutants everywhere. Its idyllic beauty was legendary, and the arms of its people open wide. Into this Eden a serpent came crashing. The U.S. government, under a treaty they themselves established, sent an armada of massive Sentinels to eliminate those they deemed a threat. The machines descended on Genosha, and in a single night had laid waste to the island. The Sovereign Ruler of Genosha, Eric Lensherr, returned from a confrontation with the X-Men to find his home land in ruins. Blaming Charles Xavier’s students for distracting and delaying him, “Magneto” vowed vengeance on those responsible.
Concept: The Heroes are students of the Xavier School for Gifted Youngsters. As neophyte X-Men, they will be sent out to confront the Villains - Magneto's Brotherhood. Cameos from famed X-Men characters abound, as no less than the survival of the world is at stake.

So we would be playing canons or making characters? Are there any open-source BESM books?
Either #1 (a or b) or #2 sound interesting, perhaps leaning towards #2.  Though, I don't have Skype, and I'm willing to bet that this is a voice game, which I also don't play in.  :(

On that note, which edition of BESM is Silver Age Sentinels closest to?  It didn't get made into 3e, did it?  It's a 2e-based product.

Megan, you could probably get away with text only. I'd just have to keep an eye on the chat screen. :)

I believe it's closest to Revised 2nd Edition. I haven't played 3e, honestly.

Dustin - Original characters. As far as books, you'll just need to look.

A reminder to folks:

No Piracy Allowed

We will not allow the encouragement or distribution of pirated works. This is not meant to target the showing of interfaces or fan work accomplishments -- only actions that undermine the rights and property of others.

I think the bigger problem wouldn't be if you could read my posts, but if I could hear everyone else as they're talking.  Even if a GM said that I could play by text, I'd have a heck of a time understanding what anyone else says if they're using voice, and would probably be asking people to repeat themselves a lot (or just have no idea what's going on).

I have a 2e book (not sure if it's revised or not, but I think it is) and a 3e digital.  I'd have to look into getting Silver Age Sentinels to know what's different, though.  3e is a lot more comprehensive than 2e, though the math system is also a lot more complicated, similar to something like Mutants and Masterminds.

Noted, GenKitty. When I said open-source I meant exactly that. Not pirated, but free and open to the public.
I'm very interested in #2 as a villain. I have Skype

I created a LFG listing for #1b, since that seems to be the most popular concept so far. For those interested, please fill out the requested information in the appropriate group thread. I haven't made the listing public yet because it's still in the planning stage.
