Signs Of Trouble (AT)

"ahh, i forgot your were here. It feels good not having to look up to see someone. i dont see any down there, and i doubt they expected us to come this way. go ahead and check. just be careful about the gunk on the walls."

Viggo pulls out a rope and ties one end to a strong tree and tosses the other into the pit.  ... perhaps there is a sturdy log we can use to lay over the pit and drop a line down from the center. "what is that stuff?"
"i guess you can try that, the issue really isnt getting down though.... you larger folk will be hard pressed to squeeze yourselves down those tunnels"  Kellen looks over at viggo
Nodding to Kellen.  Yeah, elfs don't do so good in tight places. Let me check out that black stuff first.  Fizziwik tightens the straps that keep him mounted and tightens his grip.  The first step over a ledge is always a little unnerving and a lot exciting.  With a smile on his face he nudges Gerty over the ledge and moves down to examine the black stuff, poking it with his longsword a little before deciding what to do next. ((OOC:  I'm envisioning this black stuff being on the wall about half way down and going around the entire circle.  Gerty has a climb speed of 40 and can stick to any surface.  I will keep Gerty out of the black stuff until I know more about what it is. ))
Kellen stays near the edge, keeping an eye on Fizz and the lizard.
What we need to do is find the main entrance, the build a big ol' fire in this hole and cover it back over with the brush.  That'll smoke the little buggers out.
"that entrance could be miles from here, or deep underground. we have no idea where these tunnels lead. if it comes to it ill climb down there and go in myself"
The black stuff appears to be very slick but the gecko does not mind at all and passes through it without any difficulty.  It seems it is made to keep things from being able to easily climb out of the pit.  The holes go in each direction for a ways.  It is hard to see exactly where they go for they each split into a T intersection in about 20 feet.  Anyone coming into the pit must either climb or jump in.  The gecko is clinging to the side of a wall.  The entire pit walls are rubbed down with the black slick material.  It also looks flammable.
Fizziwik guides Gerty back to the top of the hole.   I think this is a big ole death trap.  The holes go every which way and unless you're good at tracking through tunnels you'd probably get lost.  And it looks like grease on the walls here, it'd make it really hard for any of you elfs to get out of the hole.  Gerty is strong, but not strong enough to pull one of you out.  Oh, and it might be flamable.  Not sure.  Though I do like watching things on fire, the way the flame flickers in the wind is quiet fun to watch, reminds me of this time... Fizziwik catches an evil eye from Kyros... ahh, story for another day, so, there you have it.   Looking to Prytania.  What next boss?
Kellen smirks and looks over to prytania
Prytania scratched her head - " Well... We cannot get in, but if there is a big party out there, they will want to come back sometime. I say we stick to the plan and ambush them... I don't know... Maybe set the grease on fire so they know something's happening and rush here instead of getting in at another entrance "
"if were simply going to wait here then im going down the hole, we should at least see whats down there, and ive dealt with tunnels before." Kellen looks frustratedly at the pit.
"What, nobody brought a rope? Bah, fine then, we wait for a while. Let those that can, climb in the dark, and if they get in trouble, run back here to this opening."  Kyros peers down into the hole, wondering if he should join the party in the tunnels.
"My niece and I both have no issue seeing in the dark. We can easily traverse down there... Well I can..." Azariah commented, looking back to his crippled niece. She didnt look back
"your simply too big azariah, and yes we have rope. again, the problem isnt getting down. You larger folk will have enough trouble just moving around. youd be in the way of eachother, and anyone else that went down with ya." Kellen starts sliding down the rope into the pit, after nodding to the others. "if you need anything, you'll know where to find me ."
Fizziwik shrugs and nudges Gerty back down in the hole.   Guess I'll go help the halfling.
I do not know who is in the tunnel and who is in the pit and how you got there ..  Please post your character name: jump(roll) or climb (roll) or other (information) and where your character is right now
((ooc: Kyros, outside the pit.))
Fizziwik: No roll needed: On a gecko, in the bottom of the pit, not inside any tunnels.
Rusty stands at the top of the pit, sling loaded and ready for trouble.
Ren is outside the pit. The pit is rather dark and the supposed tunnels inside can only fit a small creature. So Ren stands back and observes his surrounding instead.
Eilife stands slightly back from the edge not wanting to fall into the pit. She splits her attention between keeping an eye on those within and scanning about outside the pit for anything approaching.
Issachar stands at the top of the pit, a tindertwig in hand.   I had the solution, until Kellen and the gnome went down into the hole...

((Using the rope, climb of 16 into the pit Oh. Were... 22 acrobatics if that's better :l))
Kellen descends the rope into the pit, and takes a moment to inspect the holes and water. (( kellen gets a 30 perception to look for...anything, and a 23 survival to look for recent tracks))
This was a mess, everyone was scattered, and Prytania couldn't hold them anymore... She tried to organize them a bit: " Ok guys, we are scattering here and the main force might come at any time. When the team enters the tunnel, we need to set up an ambush "

"Their main force could be anywhere" ... "we should send a runner and set up a signal if the town is attacked"  OOC: Assuming combat doesnt start here.
The ground underneath the water seems hard, as Kellen pokes it with a stick .. it is about 2 ft deep.  The holes lead N/S/E/W and then T intersection.
Kellen pulls out a kukri in one hand, and a couple pieces of chalk in another, and marks an arrow above the hole he enters (the one pointing away from town/further down the same path).

Issachar puts the tindertwig back in his belt pouch and begins walking back the way he came.   Time to see where they really went.  I hope they didn't circle back around and attack the outpost while we are out here playing ranger... As he walks away, his face elongates and his ears grow pointed.  It even seems that his beard becomes thicker. //ooc Shapechange +2 all saves, Survival 30 to find the tracks.
Andy, never one to miss a good adventure, has been quietly observing the situation from the back of the party. Andy recognizes both that he has no skills that could be of use at this time, and that his big red hat is much better than Fizziwik's. He quietly humms a song to himself and looks around (passave perception 11) whilst wondering how to make himself usefull.
Kellen looks down the T intersections, "hey fizz... uhh...fizziwik. you any good with maps? even if its just a rough sketch id like you to jot down the ways we go.", and then he turns left, trying to complete the circle around the pit and look down any side passages before venturing deeper.
Fizziwik hops off of Gerty and grabs his longsword.  He then issues a command in gnomish and the gecko runs back up the wall and stands next to Pyrtania in a defensive posture. He sighs a little as he straps on his longsword, adjusts his shield and follows Kellen into the holes.   I don't like getting seperated from the group.  This is a classic Kobold tactic, lure part of the group away and gang up on them. Fizzy keeps his eyes open for trouble. ooc: perception 17

As Fizziwik and Kellen enter the passages they look for signs of traps but do not see any immediately .. upon approaching the intersection .. They hear grinding mechanisms.  Back at the pit, the floor (with the water) begins to lift up in 4 directions sealing up the holes.  The water drains downward into a secondary pit section revealing an army of kobolds.  They have weapons readied as they fire at the group above.   AT combat works differently since this is a game of the mind and there is no actual chance of "dying" unless failure means death .. so .. here is what you need to do .. The mechanics work like a chase scene .. I will give you two choices to roll .. Each player effected may roll ONE and only one of these choices.  In some cases the highest player roll will be a primary and others will become assists.  Creative solutions during team rolls count as auto assists.  In some cases (like this one) the roll is against individuals and not team.  There are two situations here .. one for Fizziwik and Kellen and one for the rest of the party.  In team rolls you do NOT all have to make the same choice to achieve success.  During Individual attempts, creative solutions may be used for an auto-success  Group 1 (In the Tunnels)  - TEAM - Strength [16] (to push the plates to get out) or disable device [14] (to use the mechanism to lower the plates) Group 2 (Around The Pit) - INDIVIDUAL -  Ranged Attack Roll [14] (to eliminate 1 kobold from the army) OR Reflex [15] (to drop and cover from being hit)

Actions: Attack - 23
I am not going to be bested by some kobolds. Taking hold of the plates and summoning all of his inner strength, channeling his hatred of all things reptilian**, Fizziwik pushes against the plates and manages to toss them to the side. ((OOC: Strength Check 22)) ** (not actual reptiles, they are cool, just the ones that think they can walk on 2 legs, that's weird and unnatural and it is well known that all gnomes dislike the one but not the other)
You ONLY do ONE of the ACTIONS .. NOT BOTH ...so you need to choose Attack OR reflex
Kyros fires an arrow at one of the kobolds, and it drops dead, the arrow stuck in it's throat.  ((Attack roll 20))
Noises emerged from the pit as the small members of the group entered it. Everyone turned to get a good look at it, revealing an army of kobolds, ready to fire. Prytania couldn't see too well inside the cave, but she threw a javelin and a pain scream confirmed her hit. Actions: Attack - 16 Success!
Rusty was ready but his attack misses its mark. Agile buggers, to think I could have been one of these monsters. OOC: if I can rdy an action in AT that was this attack. I assume I can try another if that is approved. My second to last post " Rusty stands at the top of the pit, sling loaded and ready for trouble."
Issachar, hearing the sounds of battle, immediately rushes back and fires his longbow into the mass of kobolds (Attack 13, miss).   We should have used my plan!
Kellen rushes forward and slashes a kobold in front of Fizziwik, preparing to face down an army. "oh yeah issy, lighting the pit on fire definetly would have solved this problem." ((OOC: attack of 17- success. ))
During this turn Kellen needs to provide an assist with a strength roll or a disable device .. you are "in the tunnels"  and not in the attack group so your attack does not count (even though i understand that you might do what you did but you were in a different grouping for that part) 4 successes against the kobold army The army is greatly reduced and weakened  (2 defense checks instead of 4) Kellen and Fizziwik come back out of the tunnels ready to join the fight.   Kek tel makto ronk dai (we will feast upon your flesh this day) in draconic yells at the party.  The kobolds launched their own arrows into the fray .. Their arrows are coated with a potent sleep toxin.   All players are in the same individual group for this round unless you chose reflex last round and you are gain a +4 to your defense score against the volley All Players - INDIVIDUAL - Roll 2 Defense Checks V. Kobold Attack Score  (You only roll 2 because they are in a reduced in number) Making a Defence Check: Defense Value (take your AC and subtract 10  ex. 18 AC would be an 8)   Kobold attack score is 16.   (11 + 5)  Defence Check = Roll a D20 and add your Defense Value to the roll and compare to the Kobold attack score If your roll is equal to or greater than the attack score it misses you .. if it is less than the attack score it scores a hit. If you are hit and ONLY if you are hit you take 1 wound.   If wounds = your hit die you are unconscious For each hit you must save vs. poision arrows. Fortitude [13] Failure means you fall asleep.
Kellen deftly dodges kobold attacks now that he is out of the tunnel  ((sorry for the mix-up) defense checks of 16 and 18)
Prytania slammed her shield into the ground as soon as she saw the kobolds shoot. One of the arrows bounced into the shield while the other flew way up from her head. (OOC: Rolls 30 and 23)
Fizziwik plants his feet firmly as the kobolds surge towards him.  He twists a little as a javelin breezes by, his shield effortlessly blocking several attacks, the last of which leaves him open for an attack which bounces ineffectively against his armor. ((Defense: 22 & 16))

The koblold army launched a hail of arrows down upon the group. Ren, only being able to fight up close, was near the front of the group. Dam, they are going to counter attack, I better get rea..... Suddenly felt dazed -- The Arrows  Stumbling backwards Ren struck his sword into the ground in an attempt to stabilize. What! This image...   His sudden nausea seemed to go as fast as it came, however by the time he looked up the arrows were already descending. Ren didn't wear any armor, his entire defense was reliant on quick dodges and sword techniques, but in this current situation he was not in, he could use neither.      Raising his hands in front of his vitals and ducking down to create less space Ren took several arrow. (2 wounds, Ren has 3 hit die) "Gah" Taking the opportunity to grab on to his sword, the moment that he did he felt woozy. What! Did these thing poison their arrows as well! Dammit I took a boat load of them.      Immediately Ren raised his sword and hand along with it and bit into his thumb, causing more blood to rush out. Dispite all the arrows they seemed to only penetrate skin level and Ren was still standing. After taking a few deep breaths Ren stood up, still awake. I need to be more cautious.  Actions: Defense Rolls - 10, 10 (I rolled 2 nat 1's) Take 2 Wounds. Ren has 3 hit die.  Fort Saves - 24, 24 (I rolled 2 nat 20's)
Seeing the kobolds ready their attacks, Kyros ducks for cover, with one of the arrows bouncing off his armor without effect, and the other going  between his legs. ((defense rolls of 18 and 20))

Viggo evades the Kobald attacks, but is left with no weapon (loading a sling is not do able one handed), he drops his sling and draws his dagger.
Issachar, still running towards the hole, runs smack into a kobold arrow (Defense 7) the arrow sinks into his shoulder deeply.  For a second, he feels drowsy, but fights it off(Fort 20) to join the fray.
