I am attempting to make a 2 player game (think chess). Is there an easy to assign all the white pieces to a specific side and all Black to the other side, and then when a player joins he chooses white and he is assigned all the white pieces,

If you don't need specific details of a character (attributes, abilities) for each token, you could have all the pieces represent either the "white" character or the "black" character.  Then you just assign the player to either the "white" or "black" character.
