Thank you all for expressing interest and willingness to join the game. I have a character creation thread call  Character and group discussion . I'm doing this as your characters are part of a team and everyone needs to be aware of each character's abilities and skills. That thread is where you post your rolls and begin the discussion about characters as you build it. You can also do it in the chat but that will be deleted prior to the game (I generally clear text archives prior to game start). The group thread has the information about the number of classes sent to mars and the reason why there is a mission to mars. Your character's reasons is up to you to decide why they put in for the mission especially considering that it might be a one way mission.

Some type of background to explain why you were hired to go to Mars. No one is a complete unknown. The group spent the last 3 to 4 yrs training together, Space X would have done a background check, your character would have experienced an ongoing psychological testing during the training, etc... Basically everyone needs to know mostly what makes your character tick and such. Someone who is a serial killer would not make it to mars nor anyone with any of the thousand other severe physiological disorders. Your teammates must know (or think - if your character has a hidden agenda, let's PM talk) that you have their back and you have the skills to do it.
I'll get started this AM....
Ok.  The background on my character; I grew up in Silicon Valley, and did contract jobs for several up and coming companies after graduating from college.  I had no living relatives other than a cousin, who also contracted for the space agency. He recommended that I apply to the program. I was not alone in the applicants but my reputation of quiet competence, and willingness to take on unusual projects helped me rise to the top.  Of course it did not hurt that I was dating the senator's daughter.  I actually was supposed to be an alternate, but one of the other expert applicants took sick with the swine flu 3 days before launch.  I see all problems as challenges, and often keep working through until I have solved an issue.  Bring the coffee and keep it coming.

Ok. I took the advice of some star without numbers gm's and dropped the limitation of the stat replacement with a 14. Choose one of your prime stats and replace it with 14 if you are suffering from a low number.
I have 18 int. I'm fine. I'm a super genius.

If you wish to change them or just let the sheet drop the rolls into the chat when needed, it is your call. Usually with pbp I just hand type the rolls into the chat as a whisper so that they are not seen in the actual text if I did not customize the sheet rollers. This sheet is complicated in it's coding so I did not feel up to customizing it for a limited run pbp.
I hope I'm ready too!

Central as well. Best time zone.
EST, but I wake up early and go to bed early, so might as well think of me as European. Also, does anyone have the land vehicles skill? If not Ajax can drive, but if someone is a driver, might as well let them do it.

You know that you all, 9 people, are not going to live in your transport. You might want to reread my initial posts as there are key points expressed in them. I have no problem doing a slow kill if people skimp on reading my posts.
It seems all our stuff is scattered everywhere so we need to use our transport to go get everything.
I understand that we have habitable units that we need to find and assemble.....just what my guy does well :/

Ok, posted. Now a short bit about the suit you all are wearing. It is not a spacesuit (vacuum suit) per say. As Mars has an atmosphere, a thin one but there is one, the suit is more of a pressure suit that is armored. It is powered by the batteries and has an oxygen scrubber built in so it can carry over 48hrs of oxygen. The plate is built into the helm and drops down to cover visor to protect it. The hud display is only a fraction of what can be shown. Top left is the suit environmental which is oxygen levels, power levels, any suit punctures and where (in general such as left arm or right leg). Top right is a radar image feed icon that originates from the transports radar unit. The bottom corners are not mentioned as I'm letting you all decide to personalize those corners. The suit itself is not powered but it is armored. It is customized to each person in terms of their body shape and size. Chest plates are replaceable (spares are in one of the pods) along with other spare parts. I'm leaving much of your inventory unsaid so that you all have a say in what came or not. The actually mechanic, if you are going to ask for something that is not mission related or just oddball, to find out if it was shipped is "/w gm inventory check [[2d6]] vs 6". If it is mission related and has a good chance of it being critical to the mission then just assume it was shipped otherwise give the inventory check roll and go with the result.
Pat.  Are you cool with our PC's naming the NPC's that are on part of the trip?  I.E. Bud naming Igor.

I go with the flow. Just remember that what you name the npc's now could turn into your character's name later if you have to replace your current character.

Please no Larry curly moe ;). One question for Pat: is the Martian atmosphere thick enough for a hang glider or ultralight? I read in the Martian facts that the atmosphere is thinner but Gravity is less.

The atmosphere is thinner that earths while the gravity is lesser also (it is only 1/3 of Earth's) so it is possible (won't know unless you try but the mission techs did not think of that) to use an ultralight but a hangglider would need some form of lift. Most hang gliders use thermal upswells in the atmosphere to maintain or gain height but on Mars there is a slim to no chance of there being thermal upswells in the atmosphere due to the distance from the sun and the thin atmosphere.
It would have to be powered then; a small engine (perhaps an electric) and propellor on the rear.

Paul, don't forget to use the /me command unless you are going to change your characters name to Paul. I think emotes of a characters actions and description paints an image better than just stating stuff. This is all about building the story of man's first steps and their survival on Mars. If you need help or have a question, please post here or even pm me. Everyone is doing a great job. Please keep owning the story and running with it. Even though the game is grounded in reality somewhat, you all should be noticing the more cinematic aspects coming into play now like the martian sandstorm that stretches hundreds miles wide and a mile or two into the atmosphere while it is almost hundred miles deep. Add to the fact it came out of no where (you all had no warning from above until it was almost on you). This is why I choose SWN instead of GURPS or some other system that was grounded in realistic simulations. I did not want to have to calculate everything out. I wanted to handwave and just be able to say, within game logic, that this is happening.

Hey Paul. Instead of asking in the game about wanting to monitor the pod and transport, just emote your actions and desires. Try this instead /em will continue to monitor the status of the transport and the pod in realtime on our instruments so that we can react quickly if the wind causes an emergency. Or /me whatever action you want to do. It helps with the immersion factor of the story if everyone emotes their character's actions and speech. Which is a better read "Pat S. I walk into a bar and say give me a beer" or Pat S walks into a bar and says "Give me a beer". The first one is just a statement of the action but the second one paints the picture of me walking into a bar and ordering a beer. With the emote feature you can paint and expand on the scene so let me expand on my emote scene at the bar. /em walks into the rundown seedy bar that has stale smoke hanging stagnantly above the heads of the rowdy looking patrons who are drinking and playing pool. The music coming from a battered old jukebox sitting in the back corner of the room blares out a honkytonk song. The one eye bar tender is, standing over by the beer taps, wiping out some mugs. Spotting the bar tender, he walks over to an empty spot and slams his hand down before calling out "Give me a beer" with a growl. GM talk I want all my players to take charge of their scene and paint a vivid picture. I'm not a GM that has to control all the details. This is your game, your story also. Add the details of the scene and let me worry about the big picture of the overall story. This is your chance to shine. If you want to post a good concise emote that paints your character doing an action, go for it. If you want a wall of text, just keep it a small wall or break the big wall into small walls but never control another player's character. Control an npc, within reason, all you want. Make up a name and nationality if you want. There is 10 members that landed on Mars and another 10 in space that will never touch ground but can be communicated with. The micromanagement of details is not something to worry about unless you, as a player, deems it is something that is crucial to the story and it's progress. If your character counting ammo and and doing piece by piece inventory is crucial then type up a post that includes a detailed list of inventory. If you think your character post should just indicate, aka handwave, him spending a few hours doing inventory and checking ammo then just type of a descriptive post of him doing it but don't worry about a detailed list of inventory. If you are not sure of your post, ask in the forums here first. There is no rush at this moment and even then if it was a rush moment in the game, aka combat, it is not truly a rushed moment in real life as this is a play by asynchronous text post, mouthful there so let's call it PbatP, so it is just fine to ask about it in the forums and get other peoples opinions. If you don't think it should go into the ooc, create a thread and post it there. After the question is flogged to death and posted, it can be deleted and the game goes on. Questions? Comments? It's your dime so make the time to chime.
Can I steal some of this for one of my games Pat?

You will know when it is by my text and when I post specifics such as combat or indicate in the forums that it is crucial for specific details (and I will do that also). You can also have a short group discussion about a scene and agree on a group description of everyone then a general post for the scene will move it along. This is a cooperative story telling that I'm attempting to run.
I am all about Bud's idea of sledding down this mesa.

Ok, a quick checkup. Is everything moving at a comfortable pace? Am I introduce enough elements to keep the game moving forward? Do I need to step up the pace and introduction of the elements? Do I need to let you all explore each scene more before adding more elements in? Please give feedback and suggestions that are more than a yes, no, and include more than one line. Without feedback about what you as a player think the game might be lacking (I do read and take in consideration all feedback and suggestions that are appropriate to the game) the game will stall and stagnate which will lead to it being closed down and written off.
The pace is going fine. I might have missed a notifivation about hearing the static earlier though.
