Keeping parts of map revealed

Hello all, I'm setting up the Well of Dragons (Rise of Tiamet) map for my group.  I've got all the dynamic lighting lines drawn into it and they work great but I wanted to make it so that the players could see the parts of the map they have revealed.  Is there a way to do that?  I tried fog of war, but that just seemed to make the entire map black and even removed the light from my test token. It's a large map and I don't want them wandering around for hours because they can't see the paths they've already taken....  As much fun as that would be.

The only way currently to handle that is to drop markers on the map that have vision and are set to all for control. There are some suggestions around this idea though, which you might be able to lend your vote to.
