Competition Ideas

October 22 (11 years ago)
I'm looking for ideas of what sort of competitions I could put into a massive Tournament in-game. I already have Archery, Joust, Strongman, Mage Duel, Foot/Horse Races, and a Wrestling or Combat based competitions. Can anyone else think of any good ideas, perhaps even some less than serious/fun things like Catch the Chicken. Also so mechanics on the listed types/new suggestions would be appreciated. I'm running a Pathfinder game.

Thank you
Leigh H.

I'm trying to think of a way you could have a demolition derby in a high fantasy setting. Perhaps using "animate object" on a carriage?

Baking/cooking contests.
Alternately food eating contests. Always a fun time.
Illusion contest (perhaps an alteration of the mage duel)
Storytelling

Go to any rennfaire and you will see what types of competations they had back them. Trick jousting which is an obstical course and you are trying to lance a small ring while controling your horse in a full gallop throughthe course. Who evere gets the most rings wins. This could be set up as elimination rounds also.

I can't believe drinking contest hasn't been brought up yet and how I missed that from the beginning. Cons saving throw.

Unfortunately, renfaires aren't very common in the UK... :(

And as a quick question, how would you run a Horse Race. I was thinking Ride check vs DC 10 to push your horses speed, with its base speed increasing by 10ft per 5 points you beat it by. then increasing it by running etc. Con check per round to see if your horse is winded, with a cumulative -2 penalty to the Ride check per test failed... Does this sound good?

Someone said storytelling... I think it would be VERY funny...
maybe an RPG game, or another tabletop RPG like that... An RPG inside an RPG, RPG-Ception!!!

Apart from that
Three legged race
Sack race
Dodgeball

That would depend on the system being used, if it had rules for that, and crunchy the GM would want the game to be.

The first race could be at a DC 12 or so as this would have it a little above average then the next race (depending on how much time between races would influence the horses and their endurance) would increase it. Again the amount would depend on the GM. Now this would be about the race itself. The other modifiers would be the jockey's skill, how much they encumber the horse, etc... as I said crunchy.

Now that I'm at my computer not a phone I can expand on somethings. Renaissance fairs (aka Rennfairs), google them and most pages with show and inform you what they are about if you don't have them in your area.

The trick jousting contest is one that I witnessed at a local Rennfair years ago. It had a group of riders and their horses. The first course was a hitting a ring suspended in the air on a straight course (harder than it sounds) with your lance. Those that ringed it go to the next course which was the suspended ring down the course but there was two of them. The rings were at different heights ( you could also have them on different sides also). The next one was three rings like the second course but it was on an oval track with a simple log jump or fence jump. The last course was like the fourth one but now there was 6 rings. Who ever got to the finish/start line with the most rings first won. Usually there was only two riders by then if they even got that far. The rings varied in sizes also.

I like the trick jousting idea, that's something I can work with. I also like your take on the horse races, rather that making it over complicated, make it a test of skill, Roll above a set DC, whoever gets the highest roll (that obviously beats the DC) wins... Cheers MetroKnight

Just remember that jousting is very difficult skill to learn, let alone to master. There are videos on that subject.

Did anyone say "Drinking Contest"? Because I love RPing someone in a Drinking Contest. I'll edit the rules for said rules later, have to go to work right now.

There are rules out there for intoxication. I have it somewhere on my hard drive. If you want it I will post it in a few days.
Heck if some players don't wanna drink themselves to unconsciousness make it an eating contest....wanna make it more exotic pick something that no one would expect like the liver of some random animal
