So me and some friends are just getting started and we're trying to add characters to a game and under journal there's nothing, it's blank.

Welcome to roll20 Evon. I'm guessing you haven't picked a sheet? The GM(creator of the game) must pick a character sheet template from the Game Settings page. When creating a new game.. Or if you need to choose/change a sheet after a game's creation, use the Game Settings page.

Evon, here is the Wiki page for adding Characters: https://wiki.roll20.net/Journal#Adding_Characters If you have added some Characters, you might need to assign Player names under the Permissions for "In Player's Journals" and "Can Be Edited & Controlled By", on each Character, so that everyone can see the Characters listed. Until that permission is set, only the GM will see the Characters listed. Vince -- you don't actually need to assign a Character Sheet. That's optional. A Character journal can exist with simply the Bio Tab, and the Attributes Tab, as all characters were before Roll20 added the Character Sheet feature.
You might want to look at the tutorial https://app.roll20.net/editor/ before you get too deep in the weeds. While some of this is out of date https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLJGKJMlzabImVje_AsVE_mXOlVjfk4seq will show the capabilities of the system. There are a lot of resources on You Tube and other sites. Also the forums will generally try to help you. BTW opening the Journal and clicking ADD will get you here:
