A 6th edition HERO system game focused on military science fiction of
the 'mecha' subgenre, 'Bluebolts' (the campaign being named after the
the mechanized infantry regiment the players are a part of) will be a
cinematic game in a relatively low sci-fi universe, focusing on a
conflict between the 'Federated Nations' of Earth and the 'Rationalist
Cooperative' of Selene (A.K.A. Luna, Earth's moon). The greatest
thematic influences on the campaign are the 'Gundam' series and the
'Heavy Gear' games, while the Lunar antagonists are loosely based on the
classic Heinlein novel "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress".
I've done an extensive setting write-up, so extensive
that I hasten to add that reading it all immediately isn't necessary.
The protagonist faction (and the somewhat more sympathetic of the two),
the Federated Nations, is a slightly deconstructive take on the 'Earth
Federation' that tends to pop up in mecha settings. The player
characters will be members of the 107th 'Bluebolts' demonstration
regiment, a well-equipped 'parade unit' intended more for public
relations than combat; the soldiers of the regiment mostly see it as a
cushy, entertaining assignment that lets them do a lot of traveling.
Needless to say, they'll soon be finding themselves in a hotter
situation than they'd ever imagined when the plutocratic, transhumanist
government of Selene launches a full-scale invasion in retribution for
the F.N.'s supposed tyranny.
Prospective players shouldn't be discouraged if they
don't know Hero system especially well (or at all). I've never run it
before, but a player that I've already recruited is quite familiar with
it. I'll be running the game in a hybrid text/voice format; having
voice-chat capability is recommended but not strictly required. We'll be
using standard 175 point heroic character generation, but the mechs
themselves will be pre-generated and provided. Strong coordination
between the players and the GM is a good idea when building HERO system
characters, so I'll be hosting at least one character generation and
discussion session before starting anything.
I'll most likely be running the game on Mondays,
Tuesdays or Wednesdays, with a possibility for Fridays, in the late
afternoon or early evening (probably between 5 and 7 C.S.T.) - game day
and time is flexible.
