Play area size not consistent

I have a problem where if I zoom in the map appears larger and if I zoom out it weirdly crops it into a narrow space. I'm finding it difficult to tell how big maps are and scale backgrounds to fit because of this. It becomes a problem when I place icons near the edges of the map and have to fiddle around with the zoom until that part of the map reappears. I've tried opening in Firefox, Chrome, and ME but I still have the problem. Has anyone else encountered this?
Known bug... for YEARS... and nothing's been done for it ever.
Yeah, the workaround is make the page size a little bigger than your map to build a buffer around the edge. That way, you can easily center the view on the edge of the playable area.

And never zoom all the way out!
Thanks guys! That's a shame they haven't fixed it by now :/ It's so annoying.
