I got into Hero very recently - through the Bundle of Holding late last year - and from a few cursory read throughs, I can't see any reason why you wouldn't be able to run a campaign of Hero in Roll20. Now, if you're looking to automate tasks like splitting out Body and Stun damage from die rolls or doing calculations in play, then you'll find the API feature (via a mentor level subscription) immensely useful. There's no problem with even the free tier assuming you're willing to interpret the results of the dice in your head as you would do on a real tabletop. Fabio M. has already created a series of scripts that do a very good job of automating an awful lot of the HERO system. ( HERO API ). I haven't looked at the latest code but when I last looked at it it was doing a very good job of handling combat phases, combat rolls, hit locations, armor, and damage (both killing and regular). Since then I believe people have added in the ability to block and dodge. However, as you said, you really don't need all those APIs. When I use to play HERO tabletop I didn't have any APIs. We just rolled the dice, totaled it, counted up body, and wrote down our stun and body totals on scraps of paper. We didn't even have the ability to scroll back to double check if we thought something was off. Of course we also had to walk six miles to school each day through three feet of snow, uphill, both ways, so I can understand that young whippersnappers new to the game might want to take advantage of APIs.
