So I Hear People Roleplay here

Hello, So a friend recommended me to Roll20 to scratch a roleplaying itch I had. I havnt heard much about it, but Id love to know more. Do I have to know people already who have Roll20 to play or do people meet on here to form a game? Do I need a book? Ive roleplayed a few times but don't really own a system. Is it only real time or is there a slower turn based timeframe? thanks for helping me with my noob questions!

Just up to the game and who is running it. 2. the DM or game runner can determine what is needed but you user self do not need anything other than what your instructed to have for the game. some are mic and camera some are simply text. 3.in real time during game but most are some form of turn based system
