Heya Norse! Usually the cause for this is a disconnect from the servers. Usually when this happens, you'll see a red box in the top left corner letting you know about the disconnect, and any work done during the disconnect has the potential to be lost. Do you recall having any internet issues that day, or any issues with roll20 at all? Add-ons are the most common source of issues that I've seen. Did you recently add any new add-ons to your browsers that may have caused issues? Also, which browser are you currently using? Roll20 is currently only compatible with the latest versions of firefox and chrome, and may cause issues in other browsers. If this happens again, grabbing a console log is the most sure-fire way of letting us see exactly what's going on when it happens.
