Is there a way to get the srd compendium to use tokens with images as opposed to just generic? Is there a standard set?  Can we attach our own?

Unfortunately you cannot update the tokens for entries in the Compendium. Rather you are supposed to create the character in you game (by dragging directly to the VTT or onto an empty character sheet) and then update the token manually. The MM does have tokens attached to the entries, but the same rule applies if you want to change the default tokens.
