New to D&D

Hey everyone! I'm new to D&D as a whole and was looking for some guidance in the form of a mentor of some sort or maybe a group that would like to take me under their wings. I have read through a lot of the handbooks and have some trouble understanding a lot of it. I'm usually a person that learns better from experience since the vast amount of information from forums is kind of overwhelming. I just have a lot of questions when it comes to creating a character and the such and how a lot of the game works. I know this might not be the exact right topic to be posting this to but if anyone can help me out that'd be highly appreciated.

Well you've come to the right place to learn about Roll20, and how to use it to play D&D and other games. As for how to play D&D itself, that's a bit outside the intended scope of the forums. The terms of use pretty much discourage anything beyond discussing the site and how to use it. If you are serious about wanting to learn to play, there are games in the Looking for Game forum, and the  Looking for Game Listings that welcome neophytes, though it takes some patience and diligence to find an open game. There are a lot more players than game masters. Beyond that, there are a lot of games being streamed these days, and numerous Youtube sites that feature instruction or actual play, if you just want to observe first.
