Noob question

My question is about character creation. I am new to Roll20. I've watched a number of tutorial videos as well as the on-site tutorial. These tutorials seem to be geared towards those who wish to run a game. However, I'm just starting out as a player without a character. What I'd like to know is how can I create one within Roll20, and how do I make it available for a game? Do I need to go through the process of creating a game, creating a character then sending it to the vault? Any help and advice would be appreciated. Thanks
