A friend taught me some new tricks with cel-shaded coloring yesterday so I thought I would test them out with everyone's favorite above-average Gardner Academy student who is totally not a part-time superhero and completely unrelated to wanted terrorist Alycia Chin--Alice Chan.

I like it.  It's not a big difference in how the coloring works, but it does make the shading and highlights fit the local colors a little better.  Expect to see these techniques used in future illustrations.

Chan-tastic. It looks great and I like the effect

September 15 (6 years ago)

1. Yes, the coloring/shading work is very nice. Good job.

2. Alice Chan totally wears glasses. And they totally do not have polarized HUD displays once she's had a chance to work on them.

(Keep this up and *I'll* have to do Janus ... or more likely the "The Mask" advance that the Scion playbook explicitly calls out.)

3. Did I mention how nice this is? Very.

And because I did Alice, of course I needed to draw Charade too.

Made some slight color changes to my previous design.  Charade should still blend into the shadows, but now has enough luminosity variance that all the colors don't blur together.

Alycia upon reading "Agent of AEGIS":

September 15 (6 years ago)

Heh.

Okay, (1) I love 99.9% of this. It has a great look and is gorgeously rendered. It makes me happy. :-D

But (2) Alycia would almost certainly not include "AEGIS" on the front of her outfit. (I'm not at all convinced that AEGIS/Parker would be enthused about that, either.)

(Something using her sigil maybe?)

For the record, Alycia actually wouldn't dispute about being referred to as an "Agent of AEGIS" -- she's honest enough to accept that she's funded by and sponsored by (and indentured to) them, whether she likes it or not. But she wouldn't advertise it, any more than she'd put an American flag on her uniform.

Okay, one other element: the baton is cool, but I don't envision it as the sort of expandable baton sort of thing (though I can see her carrying that sort of thing in her school backpack :-) ), but really something that falls into the police baton / escrima stick sort of thing (with the appropriate inlays to channel that lovely electricity, which she can not only hit with, but throw.

I like the guns, though -- those actually look like they could incorporate the grapnel system, vs doing something with her gloves.

And, again, I love the look.

This was just an errant detail I added in.  Hardly an important element to the design, so it can get removed without issue.  Speaking of the sigil though, it is on the patch right below that (though it is easily overlooked due to its small size).

The biggest reason I went for that design is I figured the fork on the front made for something to easily deflect an opponent's weapon.  Though on a more traditional police baton, the side handle would serve a similar function.  I'll see if I can make something that has a good look to it.

The pistol was partially based on Mass Effect's M-6 Carnifex, though apparently I've completely forgotten what the gun actually looked it.  As with most of Alycia's gear, I always ask the following design question - "In a pinch, could I see her clocking someone with it?  If so,fitting design.  If not, go back to the sketch pad."

September 15 (6 years ago)

That is always a good design criterion for Alycia. :-)

Not to repeat myself, but I do love the overall design. Your 1337 skills just keep getting better.

I'll confess I'm having a general problem with Alycia is the standard non-tech-magic-person-with-a-mask one of costume changes when I don't get a chance to gear up beforehand -- my brain will not let me take comic book shortcuts of "she slips on her mask and nobody recognizes Charade, who is today sporting a green 'TACOCAT' t-shirt, is actually Alice Chan who was sitting there a minute ago, coincidentally also wearing a green 'TACOCAT' t-shirt." But the purist in me is refusing to consider nanobot costuming, Iron Man self-deploying stuff, magic, or always walking around in a trench coat until it comes time to reveal myself.

That exact issue is why this exists.

Random finds from the Tumblr that Mike linked to earlier. Posted here in case Mike draws Summer again and feels like trying a new look on her.

Alycia (and/or Duskshine, Daph, or anyone else who gets involved) might decide to steer Summer away from specific places like Forever 21 due to some of the controversies around their business, but some places on this list (e.g. Dolls Kill) seem to be in better ethical shape. Will probably never ever come up in regular sessions, but forum cutscenes might find this interesting to look briefly into.

Good find, Bill.  I'll have to keep these in mind for later.

So now that I'm back I thought "I need to work on that background image" but it's sort of a lot of work so I've been chipping away at it.  To that end, I also started working on some turn-arounds for some of the characters, just so I have in mind what they look like from different angles.  And I started with Season Three Adam because of course I did.

I added the watch in purely for asymmetrical details, which I think is something I think I need to add to some of the other characters (asymmetrical details that is, not watches).

And here's a Mercury turn-around.

So first, yeah that's totally Andi's jacket.  Now I need to draw Andi in Harry's old jacket.

Secondly, with Harry finally learning to phase, I figured it was also time to ditch the goggles (as I imagine he's just always sort of phasing at high speed to keep the wind out of his eyes).

But yeah, a lot of little details to let us know Harry's growing into being the hero his family expects of him.

[Also, personal favorite part of this, Harry and Adam both only have 10 colors total.]

Obviously on to the ladies of the Menagerie next time.

Love both of these, MIke -- esp. the Mercury one (and the increasing sophistication of your art). Good stuff!

Aside from looking cute, I can imagine Summer around the house, giving into a darker and jokier mood by wearing shirts with references to robot stuff. Examples:

Took a little closer look at this.

First, it's awesome you actually included an A-10 patch for the jacket.

That said, (1) the military unit would be "AIRBORNE" with an "E" at the end, and (2) that designation is for rapid deployment / parachute units (e.g., the famous 101st Airborne), not for air units. A-10s are deployed in Fighter Groups or Fighter Squadrons.

Some sites with representative patches:

(Presumably Andi would eschew the sexist and wart-hog-motifed ones.)

Hmm. Does Halcyon have an associated Air Force (or NC Air National Guard) base?

Posted here for Mike's benefit: Alternate Radiance Costumes

Summer will probably adopt a variant of "The Classic": the caped Supergirl look (no miniskirt though). She's still keeping the fairy-princess look on file, and will bring it out when she can.
