new to online gaming, looking for advice

I moved to a new city a while back which doesn't have much of a local gaming scene. I'm interested in getting back into running some games and have decided to trying doing them online. Sadly, my old gaming friends either don't play any more or don't like gaming online. I'm thinking of putting up an LFP post here, but I'm a little nervous about what kind of players I might get. Does anyone have any advice about finding players for an online game?

What specificly are you nervous about, the kind of players you might get? If it's something like "not being that familiar with the GM tools/running games on Roll20", you can mention that in your initial posting. (But I see you have +1000h on Roll20 so I'd be hardpressed to call you "new to online gaming") If you prefer to only have player characters created without homebrew-rules, you can mention that the game you're running will have [Core Book + these limits in character creation]. Mention whether you have some campaign-setting related preferences related to what PC you'd allow in your game, you cam mention that. Other than that, I can't come up with more advise, unless you're more specific. The  [Read First] Posting to LFG & Paid Games   stickied thread in LFG does say under "General Guidelines" : Only create threads or listings for upcoming games on Roll20 And I've seen threads about questions related to LFG here before *shrugs*

Hello Michael, welcome to the online community! To find the players you're looking for, say in the lfg-post what you like about playing a rpg and most of the time you will find people who like the same thing or something close. Especially state the style of play you are looking for. Do you want to tell a story? Are you more of a minmaxer, wanting to win the dungeon? Do you care about correct use of the rules all the time or are they guidelines? These and some more questions should get you started. It is quite possible to find players who are not what you expect. People are diverse, some may like things you don't. And that's ok. You can always say no thanks and part ways with those and look for a better match. ;) Have fun!

Oh yeah, this is the thing to go for, say what kind of game you want to be part of is to way to go. If you want hack-n-slash murderhobo game? Say so. If you want a RP-heavy game, without a letter-by-letter reading of the rules and having "Rule of Cool" play a larger role? Say so. By saying what you like, you'll find likeminded player with greater accuracy.
