[5E] Dungeon of the Mad Mage for roleplayers

Hey there, Rollers of 20. Josiah, experienced DM here. I'm looking to start up a run of the new adventure, Dungeon of the Mad Mage, here on Roll20. I'll be using the official Roll20 version of the adventure with all the bells and whistles. Dynamic lighting, maps, tokens, all that good stuff. It's a really cool adventure, massive, with an enormous amount of dungeon crawling action. But despite that, it's actually not just a hack-and-slash. It is surprisingly chock full of roleplaying opportunities, with a huge number of intelligent NPCs to meet and interact with. Lots of combat can be avoided, friends can be made, factions sided with, quests obtained in unexpected places, and so on. The game will be run without house rules of any kind, and the adventure as close to "as written" as possible. Characters can be made using material in the Player's Handbook, Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide, and Xanathar's Guide to Everything, no other sources, and everyone will begin at 5th level. The game is set in the Forgotten Realms, starting in the city of Waterdeep. What I'm looking for is a small group of players who are reliably available to play for at least six hours per week, and who enjoy in-character roleplaying. By that I mean, speaking as your character, describing your character's actions in a more narrative style, and making decisions in game based on your character's concept, personality, beliefs, and goals. Since there will still most likely be plenty of combat, I'd like players who also enjoy that part of the game, and don't mind spending a good amount of time in battle. I might actually have one or two friends who can play, so it's possible that I only need one or two more people here. The timing of the sessions is to be determined, and will be worked out according to the schedules of the players who are chosen for the game. I'd like to have at least one six-hour session per week, or two shorter sessions, if that works better for people. Voice chat is strictly required, meaning that you will need to use Discord and a working microphone. You should also be comfortable actually speaking up, including talking in-character. I want everything out loud, rather than actions or dialogue typed in the chat box. The game will also be streamed live on Twitch, and posted to YouTube. We will not be using webcams, however. This is a completely free game. I've been DMing for 30 years, and I am a very pro-roleplaying, player-friendly DM. I like to describe things evocatively, use a wide variety of voices and speaking styles for NPCs and monsters, emphasize the social aspects of the game, and encourage and reward creativity. I am on the side of the players, not in an adversarial role, and want everyone to have fun, to feel able to participate, and to get into character freely. I also run a table where people of all walks of life are welcome, and any form of discriminatory speech is not tolerated. If you're interested, drop me a message with your name, general availability times, and what kind of character you're thinking about playing. I'm not really interested in joke characters or evil characters. Experience with 5th edition, or with D&D itself, is not required, as I'm happy to teach you how to play. Experience with some form of in-character roleplaying is preferred. The more you tell me about your roleplaying style or character concept, the more likely I am to invite you to play.
Hello there, Im interested in what you have to offer and I believe I fit the criterias for what you are looking for :) I am all for voice usage in my RP's and I am good with combat, But I will also be fit for doing the Roleplays and especially the RP. I tend to be a taaad long winded unfortunately so bear with me... or just tell me to shut up. You can just call me Ray, Simply enough. I play a Human Rogue named Alexandre von Wrathbone, A noble of course. The son of a Dragon hunting noble family that is one of the 3 main houses that works with the lord of his town to keep the town prosperous and lively, As well as deter the constant Dragon threat in the home continent absolutely infested with Chromatic dragons, As a result the families are well known for selling dragon hide and dragon products over seas. Now, I wont go over the entire backstory for obvious reasons as I would like to reveal this all ICly. But I do perfer to talk my way out of situations, and fight if I have to. Trying to find all the ways to do the situation and consult my party with which option is perferred, Team player here. ... Sadly I am not THAT good with voices and even then, Alex is a self-insert so... I will be waiting for a response, Likely you have too since this post went for 12 hours without a response lol . ~Have a nice day

Hello! The name is BadXAsh, or Bad as my friends call me. I'm located in the MST and generally am able to play from 9:30ishPM MST - 2ishAM MST. My week is pretty open other than Saturday and Monday. I realize my time is usually a deal breaker for folks on the east side of the country, but hopefully either you're PST based or just like burning the midnight oil. About myself: I've been playing RPGs for about 30 years, I've played just about every type of RPG out there. Started with D&D and I'm well versed in all the editions... Except 4th... I thought it was awful! I consider myself a role-player that can flip a switch depending on the group comp or the situation in game, Fun & silly, action hero, or serious drama. I enjoy Narrative style play, describing my actions and attacks. I have been told I have a nice deep voice, as well as a background in theater, so I'm not afraid to speak up, or use accents. I play all kinds of characters and enjoy playing pretty much any role within the group. I accept character deaths, I do enjoy when there are ways to come back to life that are story driven. I also enjoy characters that don’t always win the day, sometimes evil wins, and the heroes have to crawl away and do a training montage to come back and fight again to win the day? I hope this group will be dynamic, especially with players who enjoy actual role playing, not just with NPC, but between each other as well, Not really into just hack & slash endless combat or dungeon crawls that have no end. I love sessions where not even a single die is rolled. Or RPing interactions between players where the DM doesn’t have to say a word but sit back and watch their players entertain each other with the unfolding scene. That being said I don't mind combat either, I love the thrill of a close fight not knowing if we'll win or be TPKed! I like situations where combat isn't always the answer, thinking outside the box to come up with other solutions to tense circumstances. I like worlds which have both light and dark themes in them, and I like more realistic views. Sometimes Fantasy worlds are not full of nice people, I love a good villain, someone who the party hates and strives to stop but they always manage to get away. I love when a good villain finally gets defeated, but I hate to see them go, because they make for such a great story drive. About my Characters: I like playing character's who are outside the box, and are generally Chaotic Good in alignment. I enjoy being a hero that is flawed in some way or another. I play character's who are not afraid to go against the party in the interest of dramatic RPing that builds a great narrative scene, and is enjoyed by all, hopefully. I like speaking to the party and interacting with NPCs, I generally play very social characters. All of my characters are full storied with goals, flaws, and backstories, and all of my characters I try to imply actually have feelings. If you feel I could be an asset to your game just shoot me a PM and we can talk about what kind of character you're looking for in this adventure.

I'm fairly new to the D&D scene, but have a lot of xperience with tabletop role play games. I'd love to join. I usually play ranger, but im open to anything else. I use EST, but it won't rally matter how late the session starts. I roleplay quite seriously, and tend to act as my character. Mine is the story of Tenaprei, a human ranger who, for reasons to be revealed should I be accepted, he set off into the adventuring world. I try not making my characters too "special" or "unique" in order give it more relatability, but my playing style can adapt to whatever the GM/DM wants. My discord is its-a-me-MORIO#2993 if you'd like to talk more.

Sinister here. I'm generally available whenever except Monday-Wednesday nights. Prefer to play in the 8am-3pm window(pacific time) but can make other times work. I've DMed and played DnD for over 10 years now. I'm great at getting into character and making decisions based on character motivations. Unfortunately, I'm bad at voices so all my characters sound well..like me. Character concepts are hard to come up with without knowing the rest of the group. I prefer to make characters that work well with other character concepts as to not clash or overlap too much. That said I'd most likely want to play an elven bladesinger. wizard school was...boring. all night and all day sitting at a desk pouring over scrolls and tomes is...boring. maybe that's why Andor failed out of wizard school on his first year. This was a problem since Andor's family had invested all the coin they had...and even borrowed some to send him to school. The condition of the loan was Andor would return and work as a wizard for the local baron. Failing out of school meant the debt was unpayable. Thus Andor was banished from his home town. After Andor's banishment came a welcome letter from the headmaster at the wizard school. Apparently Andor showed promise in the art of bladesinging and was invited to come back to train in the secret art. Being a secret meant Andor was still banished until he could find the coins to repay the baron. Thus after his training was complete, Andor went out into the land to seek adventure..but mostly coin so that one day he could go home and relax.

Hello, I'm not sure if this already started, but in case it is open I would be very interested. My name is Yargo Melo, 26, currently working on my PhD in mechanical engineering. I've been playing D&D on and off since I was a kid, going from Ad&d( to 5e, currently I'm finishing an in person ToA campaign. The idea of a mega dungeon always fascinated me, and with the announcement of the Undermountain module for 5e I got super excited. I love role-playing my characters. It will be my first time playing online, but I'm sure it would be fun. The characters I like playing are usually wholesome, funny, but not at the cost of others. I like giving each of my characters an unique voice, and I also try to make sure everyone is engaged. In the ToA campaign I'm playing a female bard, and I'm having a great time! Right before that, I was playing Klonk, a big-hearted barbarian who is not shy about his love for ham. For a campaign like yours I would probably play a Paladin or a Fighter who learned after coming back from an arduous training that his brother, his inspiration to become an adventurer, disappeared on the bowels of the Undermoutain. In case the group needs a spellcaster I would be willing to play another bard or a wizard. I often ask myself what my character would do/say at each and every situation. I'm good at improvising and acting according to my character's personality and flaws. I'd say my weakness is that in the past I have taken actions that lead to onus on the group, E.G. with a 6 wisdom character (rolled stats) I watched as a werewolf attacked a woman, I attacked the werewolf despite in meta knowing that the woman was the villain in the situation, which the DM hinted subtly, but my character wouldn't realize (everyone in the group was ok with it, but it did not help in the long run). When it comes to battling I like the old ad&d style when combat is heavily focused con tactics, I immerse myself in my character's persona, and try to take the action that makes the most sense and that seems the most effective, while staying away from meta gaming. I have not read the material yet, and if we start playing, I won't read it at all. My available times would be weekday evenings (ET) and weekends. Feel free to say hi and/or add me on discord: yargotkd#8639
