Hello, Sarah, and welcome to roll20. I'm assuming that you are a complete beginner and so you will be seeking the most popular versions which are 5th edition D&D and Pathfinder, or perhaps the new Pathfinder 2nd edition. You will need to get access to at least one of the rulebooks for players... unless the DM is willing to provide that for you, or you consult one of the texts called SRD... The system reference document, for the specific system. I never use those. I use the player's handbook. It will also help you to find groups if you specify what time zone you're in and what times you are available in that time zone during the week or weekends. Because the site serves the world, not just the USA. For example, Monday through Friday 6 PM to 10 PM and Sundays from 12 PM until 6 PM, EST or CST USA or GMT if you are in England. Whatever. Furthermore, if you have any experience with watching any videos such as critical role or the angry DM or anything like that that have taught you lease the basics of getting a character together and playing. Finally, any fantasy stories that are your influence that you enjoy, such as Fritz Lieber or Michael Moorcock or Lord of the rings or toning stories, or whatever it is. Good luck in finding a game that fits your needs and again welcome to roll 20.
