rolling damage from the character sheet

My players cannot automatically set up damage rolls for attack spells from the character sheet. The spells are taken from the compendium and are correct. the correct boxes for rolling damage on the character sheet are checked. However, I have one player who would like to cast chill touch. It rolls an attack die (1d20) but rolls 1d4 for damage. It does not matter what we do (we even tried putting in 1d8 as the damage, to no avail. I saw other closed posts regarding this same thing.

You might want to mention what character sheet this is about.  If this is one of the fancier sheets by Roll20, you might make sure the option isn't turned on to only roll attack (don't auto roll damage).
D&D 5e charactermancer. We played with those settings. For chill touch, which was taken straight from the compendium, it rolls a d20 (for the attack) and a d4 for damage. But chill touch is 1d8 damage.  It also will not allow a dexterity attack as per the spell. At first the player and I thought perhaps we could just take the attack roll and roll another 8 sided, but for weapons, charactermancer works just fine. We even tried making it a straight up attack (a weapon called chill touch).  It still rolls 1d20 and a d4 for damage. It is definitely a but in the charactermancer sheet. Other characters do not have a problem rolling spells.

Can you post screen shots of the settings on the Chill Touch spell and attack? Also, just so we are all using the same terms: D&D 5e by Roll20 is the name of the sheet (though it is still called 5e OGL by Roll20 in some places). This is the character sheet. Compendium is the name for the list of sources and references found in the Compendium tab. Depending on the sheet, you can drag items from the Compendium onto the sheet like spells, weapons and equipment. Charactermancer is the name of the software feature that fills in data on a character sheet, using compendium data. It has two parts, Level One and Level Up. These are three different things and it can help folks find solutions for your issues if we are better able to understand them.
