The eventual surrender of the Founders’ was hastened by the betrayal of the Cardassians and brought an end to the war but at a terrible cost. The major powers that united against the Dominion invasion of the Alpha Quadrant were the United Federation of Planets, the Klingon Empire, and the Romulan Star Empire. Though they achieved victory it would take the next decade for each to tend to their wounds and rebuild their forces with varying degrees of success. The year is now 2393 and much has changed. Six years ago Federation scientists learned that a star neighboring the Romulan home system was undergoing changes and to reach supernova. A solution utilizing red matter was developed. The Romulan Senate, however, refused to participate initially and ignored the team’s warnings until it was too late. Despite the best efforts of Federation scientists, the Romulan homeworld was destroyed. Since then a reconstituted Romulan government has settled Rator III with a splinter group led by D’Tan having established a new Romulan Republic on New Romulus. Three years ago the Chancellor of the Klingon Empire was assassinated and the High Council fractured into factions, each aligning with one against the other. The heads of the Great Klingon Houses are now little more than feuding warlords and have conquered the Gorn, the Orions, and the Nausicaans. Some Klingons, however, have defied tradition and their heritage to join Starfleet though not in great numbers. With space exploration in the Alpha Quadrant slowing down and the Beta Quadrant rife with multiple undoing conflicts, the Federation has embarked on a cautious plan to restart exploration of the Gamma Quadrant. Initially, Starfleet had sent a number of ships to explore and map portions of the Gamma Quadrant utilizing the Bajoran Wormhole, the only known stable wormhole in existence, shortly after it was discovered. Those efforts were stalled, however, by the Dominion’s initial military posturing and later, the war. Now it is peacetime, and with the Founders having withdrawn the Dominion’s presence back into the Gamma Quadrant (with the exception of territory inside Breen Space) Starfleet wishes to continue its mission of peaceful exploration and scientific study in the Gamma Quadrant. A secret diplomatic mission was dispatched to Dominion space to negotiate a treaty, one that would allow Starfleet access to the vast unexplored reaches of the Gamma Quadrant without interference, as well as freedom of movement within Dominion space. Through their Vorta intermediaries the Founders agreed and a new treaty exists between the Federation and the Dominion, one that will allow a single exploratory vessel access to Dominion space. The USS Stargazer A, an advanced prototype modified from the Resolute Class, is the largest single Starfleet vessel ever constructed equipped with the latest technological advances of the Federation and Starfleet. Initially designed as a limited-build warship/carrier during the Dominion War, the plans were never realized until now. Rather than devote the ship’s design to war, Starfleet has instead made the Dauntless class a ship of peace capable of deep space exploration for a decade at a time before needing to return home to resupply. The ship carries a compliment of 4,500 officers, crewmembers, and their families. It has the ability to conduct 42 discreet scientific studies and is equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories, a compliment of Danube-class runabouts, shuttles, industrial replicators, three reactor cores, leisure facilities for its crew, and facilities for diplomatic activities. She is, to Starfleet, a new hope for peaceful space exploration in the Gamma Quadrant, to chart unknown space, discover new advances, and offer the hand of friendship to new civilizations.
