Alright so I'm a bit new to D&D too but I'm here to help you get settled into what to do to get set on the right track, Alright here we go 1.)Make sure you know what you want in the adventure, meaning do you want a sci-fi model, or a super hero? or are you craving the good old school D&D. 2.)Next think about what module you want now like for instance you pick D&D 5e, alright now you got a set game to play. 3.)I know it's a guilty pleasure of mine as well, but make a character without a class for the time being, meaning have a character made and their look, then wait until you meet the party and see what all they are class wise, (say they don't have a healer) well then you now have a class you can be, go cleric and give yourself a solid back story on why you are one, and what your goals are that made you go on this journey. ( Also please note it's okay to fill in for what the party needs but also if you just really want to play a certain class, then talk to your dm see if you can work something out, or even multiclass.) 4.)Now that you have your character and module set up, what do you enjoy more, rping? or combat? You hardly ever get a campaign that is 50/50 so make sure when you place an ad you let them know which one you prefer over the other.. 5.)The final advice I have for you is remember these two things.. 1.) There are other people at the table so try not to hog all of the attention and try not to solve every problem yourself, simply because you are stealing the thunder from other people. (For example say you are a paladin that has horrible dex... well then you shouldn't be the one trying to pick the lock of a chest... let the rogue do their job and feel like a part of the team. But don't worry your time will come to have your own skill as well!) 2.)Do NOT ever piss the dm off, learn to read a persons sugguestions at something, like if they say "That door in front of you give off a senester presence and won't budge without a key." Well if you bash down this door and what ever is behind it kills you, it is your fault you ignored the dm's warning and he dropped clear hint " Hey ya stay away from this door." This can make a DM very angry and most of the time they WILL kill you for ignoring their warnings. It is very important to also remember though it's not you and your party VS the DM, this is a terrible mindset, you guys are all there to have fun and make memories, so don't always feel like the DM is going for a TPK= Total Party Kill, most Dm's are very nice and actually fudge dice rolls to save you and your new characters from dying too early, but you have to think smart and think with the team if you want to survive. But all in all dude just have fun, don't have fun at the expense of the rest of the table, but have fun you deserve to have fun, It's D&D! Now go out there and find yourself a crew! and Good luck on all of your rolls! safe travels my friend. Matter of fact send me a private message, I will run it by my DM to see if we can fit you in to our party for our campaign!
