Intriguing opportunity for inspired DM...

A fellowship of four long-tenured fantasy nerds delving into uncharted territory. We have always played within our group, with one of us DMing. We now have a deep yearning to band our forces together for the first time under the guidance of a new GM. Generally people find us to be goofy, easygoing, relatively mature people who like to have fun and not take things too seriously. We have some ideas of characters we might want to play, although we're open to any other possibilities. We're looking to play once a week, for 2-4 hours in the early evenings (currently we're finishing a campaign playing 4pm-7pm PST on Thursdays). We are open to switching times and days, but that's what works best for us now. Looking for a DM who brings the funk! Someone who's passions involve:   *Creating epic worlds with deep, layered mystery and intrigue!   *Stimulating frontal lobes, adrenal glands & funny bones...   *Working with players with animated vigor for optimum fun! *Wants to create a long-term connection with a super fun group of people for possibly lifelong gaming Does this sound like you? Leave us a message below describing who you are and what you’re about. Thanks for your interest in joining us in this adventure! ***Open to paying low fee if the fit feels good, and possibly raising it after Covid lifts and we're back to work*** A little about us, and possible characters we've been mulling: Jake: I’ve been playing D&D for about 20 years (I’m 32) and still love to set aside the real world for goofing around in the forgotten realms. I am a huge lover of RPGs, fantasy novels, and get a ton of role playing/world building inspiration from cats like Brandon Sanderson, Glen Cook, and Joe Abercrombie. Hoping to find more fun, positive, and good humored folks to join up with. Solid grasp of 5e, new to Roll20 and stoked to get the hang of it while we’re all on lockdown.   I have a couple character ideas somewhat worked out that I’d like to try. 1. (Old) Human Warlock with the Fiend Pact. He has a classic doddering old man vibe but occasionally is possessed/influenced by an arch demon who makes him do gnarly stuff in conflict with his normally good nature. 2. A Dragonborn Paladin (sometimes comically) obsessed with his 2 handed greatsword that was handed down through his clan for generations. The clan was wiped out and he has sworn an oath of vengeance on the murderous (insert relevant entity/person here). Samantha : I have been playing D&D off and on with these guys over the past 7 or 8 years. They have been playing since childhood but invited me to join their group because I am a lover of fantasy and far off places. Growing up I was most taken with the works of Tolkien and his mythical universe, particularly the Silmarillion. I am drawn to creation and origin stories, loving all things epic, profound, dramatic, conflicting, contradicting, paradoxical, magical, and thought provoking. Having a well thought out container to laugh and play with my friends consistently is ideal.  One of my favorite characters to play was an elven druid for many reasons, especially having the ability to summon and communicate with animals. They largely became the muscle of the group in our earlier levels, though the role was later attributed to my mountain lion animal companion who could really mawl some damage. My current role is a Tabaxi barbarian so I can’t help but notice that I find comedic relief in being the lady and brute of the group.  Steven :  I’ve been playing tabletop games and computer RPGs for 20 years or so. I’ve got a good grasp on the 5e ruleset, but I think the rules are for giving a foundation for fun and can be bent or broken if the situation calls for it. I like campaigns with dungeons full of puzzles and mysteries as opposed to traps and enemies. I like to play characters with flaws in some way or another, ideally baked into the character’s stats, but personality flaws work as well. I like to roleplay in character as much as possible to the best of my abilities but it can be difficult at times. I usually have a couple character concepts floating around, but the character I’ve been trying to create for ages, unsuccessfully, is based off of Rincewind from Terry Pratchett’s Discworld series: A wizard who isn’t actually good at being a wizard but somehow succeeds despite themselves through some combination of sheer force of luck, blind incompetence, and pure cowardice. Ian : Race: Human, 35 Class: Holistic Druid, Smuggler Alignment: Chaotic Good Str: 13 Dex: 11 Con: 15 Int: 14 Wis: 14 Cha: 17  Fantasy has been a big part of my life since I was little. My parents read The Hobbit & LOTR series to me before I could read and ever since I’ve been hooked. I started playing D&D about 20 years ago, goofing off with Jake mostly, and started playing with Sam & Steve in 2012. I love being animated, in flow and creative. Moving through a campaign that encourages rich, imaginative back story by incorporating it in the process is something I love. Something beautiful happens when there is fruitful co-creation between the DM & the players in a way that supports fun for all. I’ve had a dream for a while about creating an Addict Alchemist. A mad scientist who tests his own concoctions on himself for better or for worse. After surviving decades of this form of self-abuse, his ability to withstand the onslaught of chemicals has left him with a superhuman willpower, a thorough intimate knowledge of chemistry, and a myriad of addictions that must be sustained to hold back the pain. There is also a savage, uncontrollable thirst for vengeance for the man who did this to him. An evil bastard that took him in as a child and used him as an experimental test subject for years under the guise of mentorship, tutelage and false love.
Greetings and well-met heroes! I am The Dungeon Master and I will be your guide in the realm of Dungeons & Dragons! If I may throw my hat into the ring . . . . About Me: I have played every edition of AD&D, and got my start over 30 years ago. I have been GMing for about 25 of those. I was also a playtester for D&D Next, which later became 5e. My Judging style is more of "rulings, not rules", so if you are a rules lawyer or like to min/max your characters to be powerhouses, I am not the right judge for you. Furthermore, my games tend to have a heavy emphasis on roleplay. Combat is rare (if you are smart), and can be very deadly. Also, I don’t believe in a lot of meta-gaming. None of this “Hey, who has the best Stealth score to send in there?” “Pssssst! These things are vulnerable to fire. Cast Burning Hands!” My games are rich in roleplay, with vivid descriptions and epic storytelling that the players will very much take an active role in. This is not a dungeon crawl, and not a story where you are railroaded into following a set path. This is a sandbox in which you, the players, will dictate the story! My job as the GameMaster is to merely facilitate and resolve, and help paint the most vivid mental images for the story. My World My campaign world is made up of seven large cities, with untamed wilderness between. Each city is the seat of power in a province that shares its name, governed by a magistrate. Each Magistrate is a part of the Congress of Accord, which makes laws which govern the entire realm. Magic had been prevalent in the land at one time, but 300 years ago, the council of wizards disbanded, and magic became something rare, misunderstood, and often distrusted. Magic use can be wild and unpredictable, and it is practiced largely in secret in the realms of man. It is not illegal, per se, but it is usually wise to be discreet in its use. Demihumans are rare in the world of men, but not unheard of. There are prejudices between the races. And don’t even think of making Charisma a dump stat, or it may come back to bite you. Dwarves spend most of their lives underground, and only a select few have the genetic heartiness to venture into the sunlight and withstand it’s scorching heat and blinding light. It is considered a tremendous honor to be a “Sunwalker” and conduct business on the surface. Dwarves are singly devoted to the Stonefather, although he does not grant them powers or abilities. Yet the Dwarves zealously pursue the will of the Stonefather to be carried out. The elves primarily keep to themselves in their forests. They believe not in the gods of man, and get their guidance from the spirits of their ancestors from long ago. They are skilled in many things, including magic, and strive to live their lives in a way that shall make their ancestors proud. They find the humans distrust of magic to be childish, and thus have little respect for humans or the other races. Halflings have cheerfully integrated themselves into mainstream society, and tend to cheerfully take the barbs and teasing from the humans about their short stature. After all, living among men sure beats living in holes in the ground, as their great ancestors did long ago. Optional House Rules Some of the house rules I have worked with may not seem like everyone’s cup of tea, but I encourage you to give them a try. Ever heard of combat without initiative rolls? It makes for much more dynamic and interesting combat! I also prefer to cap hit points at high levels. There is no reason a 10th level warrior, who is asleep and paralyzed, cannot be killed by a level 1 thief, no matter how well he rolls!  What about momentum? If you hit that orc for half his hitpoints, is he going to be able to just stand up and swing back at you? Or does it put him on his heels? These house rules and others make for a more streamlined combat experience, so it’s not just “Roll for initiative and wait your turn to attack. This guy is super tough, so there is no way you’ll bring him down any time soon.” Although my style and setting are what I prefer, if you're looking for something else, I can shift to suit your needs. I put a lot of hard work and preparation into my games. Thus, I charge a nominal fee of $3 per player per session.
Love your group and I can already think of so many fun stories I can run for you guys. All my campaigns are handcrafted to fit the groups I run for. DM Experience: I am a professional DM with at least 6 years of experience, more than 3800 Hours on roll20. I have been official DM for the University of Pretoria for about 3 years now.  Campaign idea in 5 sentences or less: A full open world to explore with dangers of every kind around the corner or just times at the tavern. For more details on the type of adventure, you wanna run we can go over that in session zero. The only thing I don't really run is romance campaigns Comfortable with/thoughts on Homebrew: With my level of experience I can help balance any homebrew you guys wanna try. A bit about me: My DMing style is more focused on story and characters then very hard mechanics and trying to immerse my player into the world they are a part of. I have always enjoyed studying the lore of the real world or fantasy setting. Due to my obsessive nature, I tend to become well verse to point of madness over the small details of the world. I tend to run complete open worlds allow players to do almost anything. The catch is that I charge for sessions to keep my lights on so let me know if you are interested

Hey folks I've running games for a long time (35+ years). Even played with Gygax, the folks from Flying Buffalo (Tunnels and Trolls), know Marc Miller (Traveller) and so on so used to OSG. That said, I tend toward more narrative systems.  As far as DND while I don't play 5E much I did beta 3, 3.5, 4 and 5.   Regarding sandbox worlds while I do have several I have a different approach.  In my experience I find when it's a collaborative world players get much more buy in.  So my preferred method is to have a Microscope (or microscope-esqe) world building session or two where everyone decides what kind of world they want.   As far as game system if it's 5E or nothing then I'm afraid I'll have to pass sorry.   I also prefer to focus on story vs. rules.  If the rules get in the way of a good rp session, then we'll skip them if it makes more sense.   I am on PST as well.  Oh since the other folks have been putting down fees, my cost per player per session is an all mighty $0.  Then again freely admit I may not be a fit so definitely for a session 0 or two or even some exchanges via discord if you folk prefer first.  And we can start with a one-off or a short campaign just to see how the chemistry and group dynamics work.   So PM me if you are interested.  Cheers and happy gaming!
