I'm trying to build a map for some friend, but I can't see the grid-lines as they are too bright for me. I tried changing the color but nothing happens.

Just because I have done this myself, are you sure you have your map on the map layer?  If you have it on the object/token layer, it will cover the grid and no changes to the grid will show.
