What is this game? Kingmaker is a team-based strategy roleplaying game in which rival nations vie for control of a vast fantasy setting. Equal parts teamwork, tactics, diplomacy, and intrigue, Kingmaker is a bloody but rewarding struggle for dominance – an endeavor both collaborative and competitive, rife with heartbreaking betrayals, unlikely alliances, and glorious triumphs. Players in Kingmaker will not only design individual characters to serve as their avatars. You will work in a team of 3 to design a “realm:” a dynamic kingdom with shifting borders and inconstant fortunes. A realm’s capabilities are not determined by talents, skills, or feats, but the mighty heroes and villains in its employ. Representing living people, these characters can and will perish as part of Kingmaker’s volatile narrative... a story written by you, the players. Kingmaker is more than just a competition. You will also join your fellow players in exploring an original setting paying homage to the beloved tropes and familiar heroes of the fantasy genre. Mechanically, Kingmaker blends many influences, from grand strategy video games like Total War and Crusader Kings to classic party games like Mafia and Diplomacy. Never fear if these names mean nothing to you; Kingmaker is also profoundly inspired by the immersive, emotional roleplay of tabletop RPGs like DnD, Pathfinder, and more. All told, it’s an experience you won’t find anywhere else, nor one you will soon forget! What ruleset is used? The system is a complete homebrew, the result of several months’ worth of work and several years’ worth of ideas. Much of playtesting has already been performed, but bear with us; this is our first complete campaign, and there are likely to be some kinks. This game is team-based; do I need to bring friends? Not necessarily. If you have friends in mind already, fantastic – they will still have to apply and interviewed through the same process as you. If you’re looking to join solo, that’s also not a problem! Where and when is this game played? The text-heavy sections of Kingmaker are played in Discord. The overworld map and the battles taking place on that map use Roll20. You will need an account with both platforms if you want to play. The game is sectioned into “active” and “resolution,” phases, in which players respectively plot then execute their moves unbeknownst to one another. Because of this, Kingmaker never sleeps! Something will always be happening between the action – or before the next opportunity… Any relation to Pathfinder: Kingmaker? Believe it or not, no. I started this project before Pathfinder: Kingmaker was announced, but I like the name too much to give up using it… for now. How do I go about joining? It is worth noting that new applicants joining Kingmaker will be subject to a short interview process. The competitive aspect of the game can be stressful, so it’s important that players are able to separate in-character struggles from out-of-character vitriol. If you’re someone who is easily frustrated by competitive experiences, or if you tend to take losses personally, this might not be the game for you. This in mind, we are interested in all applicants aged 18+; the game’s unique schedule means that international players are both welcome and encouraged.
