Liberty Beguiling

Orion throws up his hands in frustration and makes to stalk back off towards his house. "Well what did you bloody ask me for then? Do as you will..."
Aleixo smiles at Brim before looking back at the others. "I'm with the goblin. I've done some pretty terrible things too, working for terrible people. It's how we overcome it when given the chance to get from beneath them that makes us who we are. Let him prove he is a good person. There is no honour in killing a man already beaten. Besides, look at the poor creature, sat in his own filth. What kind of men and women do we want to be? What kind of land do we want this to be?" He still sits, half lounging, armour half on, drinking regular sips of water from his skin. His gestures punctuated with little moves from his powerful forearms, his bared chest rippling as he speaks but clearly conserving the contained muscle for what is to come. "Besides, we need bait. A man who used to be with them allowed to live for switching sides sends a powerful message to any who do have second thoughts about their loyalty. Providing an option could save us cutting through a large part of their number."

"I've done some pretty terrible things too." Aleixo's words echo in Sval's mind, and a tiny voice in the back of his head says, So have you. The raids, the pillaging...it was all so long ago and yet, he can still clearly see he, his father, and his brothers leaping over the side of the longship and charging into defenseless fishing villages, bringing carnage and taking silver.  He hadn't deserved a second chance, but he had received one. The forest had given it to him, for better or for worse. A cold, icy pain shoots from the center of his chest up through his neck, reminding him of what he had lost for that second chance. He had thought his calling was clear -- kill those that were like he used to be. But Brimblebread's convictions were gnawing at him. What if Brimblebread was this bandit's forest?  Sval looks at Aleixo and nods. "A change of heart at the end of a blade isn't truly a change of heart. But let's hear our new goblin friend out." He turns to look at Brim. "If tries anything, he dies. And it should be at your hand."

Azul stands silently taking everything in, it seems his new group of friends is fairly evenly split on the issue. He compares the logic of Aleixo's statement with the injustice that has been done to Orion and the vehemence in the mans voice. Seeing Orion start to leave "Please wait just a moment longer Orion." He looks over to Dimitrios, the man looking pitiful sitting in his own excrements. He does not pity the man though, one who would threaten the safety of an innocent family is no man at all. He says in a solemn voice   "What do you have to say in your defense?"
"I... I was afraid," Dimitrios stammers, cowering before this mass of men who would decided his fate. "Krys... Krysten, she eats men for breakfast. She's a monster, like all of Capricornus's lieutenants. Everyone who doesn't join them just ends up under their thumb anyway. I was weak and afraid and it was the wrong path. I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. Please don't hurt me." He clings pitifully to Brimblebread's leg as he grovels.
Brim kneels down besides him and smiles warmly, pulling her leg away from him though as she does so. "It's noble of you to acknowledge it, Dimi. And I know I speak for the rest of us here when I say we can and will stop this Krysten and Capricorn. But true atonement takes time to earn and achieve. Let this be the first step on that path!"
Having kept quiet for so long, and wanting to end things amiably and quickly, Petros hopes to influence Azul by saying, "Azul, should you decide on mercy, whether or not he must serve some penance, I am willing to watch over him and keep him by my side during the fighting."
"Well I believe him! So I say no slaying today. He is under my protection. Noble as it is of you to offer to have him next to you Petros, I think he would be best served persuading the attackers to switch sides." Aleixo sits up, transfixed suddenly by cleaning a spot of his helmet." And his friend too, what's he like? Will you vouch for him? " Aleixo points at the crumpled heap of the unconscious man and looks to the bandit

Dimitrios stares up at Brimblebread like she's an angel of salvation, his eye brimming with hope. It's not a perspective that the little goblin is used to. However, Aleixo's question seems to catch the man off guard. "What, Jerry?" Dimitrios asks in confusion, his eyes wide. "Jerry's alive?! Sir, Archon, um, most of the lads fillin' out Krysten's ranks are just normal folk and none of 'em have ever been on the winnin' side of anythin' in their lives. They get given the choice to be the oppressor or the oppressed and they only see one option, but it's not a nice place to be. I'm not proud of who I've been and I don't think Jerry'd exactly be boastin' to his mother about it either. You get treated like cattle and that's how you start to treat others. You talk the talk and walk the walk to survive and to fit in. That's what you'll find of most of the boys, anyhow. You're here to bring justice to the north? I beg you, give us a place here. A chance to live another life. We won't let you down, sir."
"There we go, that's settled then. If there are no objections I say they are given the chance to work off their crimes in service to bringing peace to the North. Any objections?" Aleixo looks pointedly at each person, including Orion, giving them the chance to meet his gaze and disagree.
Azul hearing the determination in his companions voice and seeing that the fate of this mans life could cause a rift within his new group. Azul had been taught that swift & fair justice was the corner stone of any society, but delivering Orion the justice he and his family deserves could spell ruin for his new group.  Looking around at his friends, he hears his father voice speak "a life may end but the clan is eternal". The elders often spoke these words when difficult decisions were to be made. They are meant to reinforce the message that the success of the clan was paramount over everything, even the lives its members. It never rang true to Azul but today it's meaning was clear. These beings were his new clan and keeping them together outweighs anything even justice. He speaks looking at Dimi first, &  then Brimblebread,  "My friends have spoken your life will not end tonight bandit. Know that you owe your continued survival to Brimblebread, and as Sval said if you ever betray us it will be by her blade that your life is ended." His amethyst eyes meeting both of their gazes as he speaks. He pauses for a moment and looks at Orion. " Though I do believe that Orion is owed some measure of justice for the harm these men have caused his family. Orion though his life is off the table, you are able to determine what punishment he faces. My people typically take a hand in this situation but if he is to fight for us he will need both. I've often seen humans use the lash of the whip as a punishment, maybe that could serve as justice here as well. But the choice is yours."
Aleixo sighs and gives a reassuring wink to Dinitros, placing his waterskin down beside him and standing as though with great effort. "I don't think that seems right. His actions for which he now repents were committed before we came and brought law to these lands. Those who fight on after we give an option deserve punishment, those who throw off the banner of banditry and join us to fight it should not be punished. It sends the wrong message. When I said he's under my protection I meant it, if you feel lashings must be dealt, lash me. Zeus know I deserve it as much as he. " He pulls off his shirt. " Unless you lack the stones? In which case I suggest you let the issue lie. " His chest gleams in the morning sun, sweat drops down his oversized muscles.
Azul does not acknowledge Aleixo's taunt and continues to regard Orion and in a calm reassuring voice he repeats what he said before  "The choice is yours my friend."
Xan sighs from the watchtower, he liked Aleixo a great deal but he was putting Azul in a difficult position. Xan thought he would probably have been little different. He looked back out across the open spaces surrounding Orion's trading post, almost hoping for the enemy to arrive in order to focus the others, to galvanise them into a unit like they had been before. Forged in battle, that was the phrase, he thought to himself, and realised that they would probably be very well tempered before too long. Despite his concern for the soul of this group, the healer stayed silent, watching out from the walls, hoping for an enemy that were probably less of a threat to them than they currently were to each other.
Aleixo lowers his voice as he walks over towards Azul. "My friend, do not let his salted words go to your head and have you pronouncing judgements like you have rights over these people. We spoke on this before and agreed to make the right choices together. There are men out there who are scared but will fight for us if we show them the right way. Do not show us to be merely an alternative tyrant, I beg you. Find a path of forgiveness and redemption and let us lead them upon it together." He holds out his arm. " I offered you my own flesh as comprimise that he be deemed to have paid if you need it. Now take this no further."

Azul looks Aleixo in the eyes and in a voice that is equal parts firm and sorrowful he says "I do not wish to cause discord in our group my friend. I have passed no judgements here, I have only allowed the man who has been injured the chance to speak and seek justice. These men have stolen from Orion, threatened not only his own life but the lives of his wife and daughter. Why are you so against giving the man a chance to find his justice?" He shakes his head and looks to Dimi and back to Aleixo,  "I believe in redemption but have little faith in finding it at sword point. You are a man of honor Aleixo of that there is no doubt. I seek no pound of flesh from you. I only offer Orion the chance to speak his piece. Do not lecture me on tyranny, if this is your choice explain to Orion why his voice has no merit."
Orion scoffs at the entire conversation. "I don't give a rat's. ass. about this man in particular, but if you mean to tell me that you want to welcome the dogs who've made our lives hell into these walls and offer them a spear and a bed, then you can bloody well find yourselves somewhere else to stay! As for his worthless life,"  once more, his words are punctuated by spitting on the ground,  "keep it, but bring me Krysten's head on a platter . Better yet - slam the bitch in some stocks and let her boys have their way with her if they join you. See how she likes her own threats." The man's voice seethes with venom and fury.
"Well there we go!  Aleixo grins. Thurning away with his hands raised " Orion at least sees sense it seems. We will punish the leaders and those who do not take the chance to be better people with the sword. They are the ones who had a choice and decided to act poorly upon this land. And the matter is settled. I understand he does not want them sleeping here until they have proven themselves honourable men."  He walks past Azul very close.  " Be clear, there will be no stocks, but her head I will bring to him. And to answer your question, there is neither honour nor justice in punishing captured repentant men for actions they had no choice in. If you want to take this meaningless title and let it fill your head with grandeur you had better understand that. The injured, rage filled victims are far from the rational heads that are needed to decide on punishment. " He walks on past, heading for Xan's tower. Speaking loudly enough for everyone as he goes " I'm getting some air, Dimitros, bring my shield and the rest of my armour. I should likely put it on now. "
Azul shakes his head, he often admired the Hellenian's passion but in tense situations it is often far past the point of excessive. He looks at Aleixo and says in a sincere voice  "I truly hope these men are repentant, I pray to Athena that in the months to come you will be proven right." He turns to Orion and says "Thank you for adding your voice." Azul whistles and Sofia drops from the sky and lands upon Azul's shoulder as he walks to his bedroll.

Orion rolls his eyes and closes the door to his home behind him with a slam. Dimitrios scrambles furtively to his feet and hurries off after Aleixo.
Aleixo climbs the tower to stand behind Xan. "I am sorry you do not approve. I will not have us become what we fight though. We must look after these men, including the one who still lies unconscious. Are you still with me?"
"I am worried that you feel the need to ask that." Xan smiles, the white teeth splendid in contrast to his tanned skin, his white eye still, in the calm before the storm they both knew was coming. His dark eyes carried the smile too, "And dont think me slow, you are asking me to heal the injured man. I will, I hope your faith is well placed. And remember this because it is important. Even if, and I hope the won't, but even if they let us down, you followed your heart and you were right to do so. In this world of tyrants and petty lords, it is all we can do." He moves past Aleixo and heads down the stairs . "Oh, one more thing. If you need my help, don't let me walk all the way up a gods damned staircase before you ask if you need me to walk straight back down, my knees arent what they were."
Aleixo chuckles. "Then don't walk off when I'm exposing my neck to dragon fire!"
Petros nods, slaps Azul on the shoulder, and turns to follow Aleixo, passing Xan as he heads back down.  "Aleixo.  I don't want us all tripping over our poutsae when they get here.  I think you and I agree no fight is better than a fight, and I think we share the desire to get these men to throw down their weapons when they get here.  You are big.  You are forceful.  Would you like to handle the talk when they come?  What do you think the best approach is?"
Aleixo smiles. "Thank you Petros, I would prefer to discuss this with everyone present. I would gladly offer my thoughts though. My suggestion would be for Orion to greet them from the tower, encourage them in. Then I would have my new friend Dimitrios encourage them to defect when they enter the gates. I am glad we agree that recruiting them is the best course, and I would truly like to have no bad blood between us. I must ask again that you stop making sweeping declarations as though you have final say on who makes which decisions. We will do what is right, and that is all." He offers his arm
Petros clenches his teeth and exhales through his nose.  "Aleixo.  You know as well as I do that in any group, there will never be agreement on what is to be done.  I am the one who is going to bear the responsibility for the success or failure of this mission.  Of course I want us to be fully united and agree to every decision, but someone, sometimes must make a final decision when we cannot agree. I've tried to be more than reasonable by not taking on that responsibility for many, or even most situations.  I don't know why you are making this so difficult.  Have I once asked or 'ordered' you to do something against your honor?  I am called a peacock by your friend, but it is you who makes sure the whole world knows you shall never take orders from another man whenever I make a decision.  I have been delegated authority here by the Mayor and by the General.  You came looking for this job.  You were not forced on it. You agreed to take the charge offered by them.  And as soon as you walked out of the Mayor's house you have done nothing but spit on his authority.  Well, I know your honor is strong, so if your honor does not hold you to this mission's precepts then perhaps you profess never to have agreed to it at all.  You simply happen to be a fellow traveler having been made aware of the problem here by the Mayor. Well that is fine.  There is no law against that.  But unless you demand anarchy, right now the Mayor and the General do  have authority, and they have  delegated authority to me, and some, if not all, respect it.  Even Orion, who is justly angry with Azul's decision for mercy, respects that authority. And you are here as guest in his home.  If you do not respect the Mayor's laws, if you are merely another outlaw like these bandits, then be off with yourself.  We here are attempting to build civilization where it has not been before.  Expand law and peace to a wild area.  It will take men willing to submit to authority.  To law.  If you are not wiling to submit to any law but your own opinion, then you are not welcome here.  I am no tyrant.  If I become one, then kill me.  Until then, please: join me.  Join us.  Or leave.  Stop making every single thing so difficult."
Aleixo looks at Petros, eyebrows raised, then laughs. "I came, as what was supposed to be part of a team. We were to be equals and decide later what to do with what we were found. We were only thrust into 'your' team because the general, not the mayor, made a last minute decision to reduce to 2 teams, and we believed you about what happened that night. " He jabs his picture at Petros as he says 'you' " But now, now I see someone handed power at a moment who is playing at what they think it means to be leader. You have known Azul less than a week, yet you suddenly declare him judge and Amiri is executioner, on a whim. You'd seen us less than 6 hours, most of which was spent apart before declaring me in charge of battles. You are impulsive and that is dangerous. So if I make things difficult, it is because they should be, you were not deciding on your dinner today but the lives of two captured men. That should provoke debate from level heads. " He opens his arms. " You want to sit and hear my thoughts? " He sits on the steps himself, continuing regardless of whether Petros joins him.  " It may be the first reasoned choice you make. I agree, someone will eventually have to lead. 20 people cannot make a decision together, let alone hundreds in a settlement. But that time has not come yet. For now we are a small band, the likes of which I have been with many times. We are few enough that all voices may be heard and stand equal. Over time we will learn without assumption what each man and woman is made from, where their strengths lie, and agreements will be reached without orders from one with paper holding them up. True leaders emerge from fire made from stone.that charter will make you a flimsy throne." He holds out his arm once more. " I believe you are a good man Petros, else I would have left already, now journey with us, lean not on this paper crutch, doing what you think leaders do, but do the right thing at all times with us and see what happens."
As Aleixo talks, Petros sits down next to him to listen.  As Aleixo finishes, Petros is shaking his head.  "We are quite a pair.  I grew up on the streets of the city, and I have seen first hand how leaders emerge from groups.  It is a bloody mess with needless pain and suffering.  And death.  When I was a small boy, women often took pity on me.  Gave me food and shelter.  Or at least a coin now and then.  I survived by being quick and disappearing into small spaces.  When I grew into a young man, I was no longer a cute puppy tugging on their heart strings, nor was I small enough to avoid their notice.  I fell in with a pack of orphans from the plague to survive.  There was no leader at first.  How could there be?  And we were picked apart within the month.  A leader did emerge, at the end.  After it was too late to matter."  Petros picks his head up to look over at Aleixo.  "And you.  A military man.  Where there is a lochagos for every little lochos.  And you learned what?  The opposite lesson?  That these men put over others, if not honorable, will lead men to do terrible things? So it is better for the honorable man to strive and to be recognized for their capability and their honor and be made leader by acclimation?  But your words turn to ash on your tongue.  You say this small band can agree on things and need no leaders until we grow in size.  Yet we did not all agree on Dimitrios's fate.  You forced your will on others through intimidation and blackmail.  You knew Azul would not pronounce punishment on this man if it meant hurting you, and you knew it would be, at best, a calculated risk in forcing your hand even if we were OK with injuring you.  You are an unacknowledged tyrant.  One that rules without the mantle of leadership and without its consequences." Petros shrugs.  "So it seems we are at an impasse.  I believe we will die without a leader.  That we will never have the opportunity to tear down that leader and replace him with a better one.  You believe if we start with a leader, that we will never be rid of a tyrant.  What you see as impulsive in my decisions, I see as calculated intuition.  A chance at the right answer rather than a certainty of none."  Petros pauses.  "You say you were thrust onto my team due to circumstance.  Yet you come voluntarily and continually undermine my team.  That cannot stand.  I have tried to win you over.  I do not want you as an enemy, yet you insist on being one.  Until this battle is done today, you are the enemy of my true enemy.  Afterwards...that is up to you."

As Petros passes Xan on the stairs, the pair of aasimars  almost brushing past each other Xan raises an eyebrow. He almost stops and goes back to join in what would likely be an interesting convrrsati0n but thinks better of it, recognising that the two of them might be able to resolve things better without an audience.  Despite his complaints to Aleixo about the stairs he walks quickly, looking for Sval as he descends, as he cat has sight of the Norscan he diverts his course to intercept smiling warmly at the scarred man . "Just the fellow, Aleixo has asked a favour and in order to do it I would like you to do one for me, come on." He heads towards the room where the second man is still unconscious after checking Sval is indeed following him. "We are going to visit the other captured bandit and I am going to heal him, he will then be forced to join Aleixo's army of redeemed souls. You are going in the unlikely event that this undoubtedly charming and repentant gentleman resists and tries to gut me like a fish and escape." Pushing open the door to the room Xan moves straight ot the man, who looks as though he would stay in this state for a long while without help and he kneels down near the man's head, reaching his hands out to either temple and closing his own eyes. Despite this Sval can see the white eye burning under its lid as Xan channels his innate gift, pushing a healing light into the other man, he could feel the mending taking place within the damaged body. At the end he felt the pull of consciousness come back and knew the man was waking. Looking at Sval he nodded before speaking to the recovering man. "Hello, my name is Xan, this is my friend Sval. We are hoping you aren't about to do anything stupid, you are still very weak and also unarmed,  whereas Sval is both armed and an extremely dangerous man when wronged, and you and you friends did try to kill him."  He stands up, looking down at the man, "You are going to get up and you will make a choice right now. Accept your part in what happened and join us fighting against your former allies or die on the end of Sval's sword. If you are interested in the former then there is a delightful little goblin woman I suggest you talk to and a couple of very serious men currently on the battlement deciding whether or not you get to see tomorrow. The choice is yours, dont let me down and do something stupid though. There are people here who very much believe in second chances and would be desperately unhappy if you didn't take it."
Aleixo shakes his head. "You misunderstand my actions. I will not be ordered to force harm on another, nor stand by as another does so unless I agree with the purpose. It is not tyrannical to make the decision to preserve a life before proper judgement can be passed. Once you know us better, perhaps you will be better placed to pass judgement on who should make each decision. Sval and Xan know exactly how I will act, and I the same for them, so we can speak for each other and our actions on the field are coordinated. Azul was hot headed in his judgement today and you should at least see your mistake in committing to a single judgement there, you had time for discussions and decisions, but acted rashly. If you do not want my help, that is your choice, but I fear once again you are rash in delivering an ultimatum. You have a task ahead that will challenge even our combined number, yet you would split the group over just two disagreements with but one common root - your refusal to slow down and share your decision making process. We are your equals in this, and that is a fact you should think on. I say slow down, relax, work with us not over us and hold onto valuable allies and maybe friends in the future."
Petros stands and takes one step down the stairs before turning, making one last attempt.  " Not every decision you disagree with is hasty .   You think you are filled with honor, but it is pride.  You think you are a man of the people, but you are a bully who is made brave because of his friends. "  Petros turns and walks down the stairs.
Aleixo laughs, loudly. "You are wrong about me Petros. I hope you will see it before too long. A bully is one who tortures and punishes from power, I only acted as I did to protect one who could not stand for themselves. Would you have had me stand by and allow the poor beaten man to be lashed, dismembered or hung because a victim was asked to name their price?  If you were in his position, you would wish for one such as I to stand in your corner. But perhaps I have misjudged you and your ability to recognise and show compassion. Forgiveness and mercy are the marks of a truly secure leader."
After the major hubbub died down for the most part and Aleixo snatched her would-be protege out from under her, Brimblebread returned to her room alone. Even if it wasn't to be that she could take Dimitrios under her wing like she'd envisioned, she realized it'd likely been foolish to assume such a thing as a newcomer and a goblin. Instead, she resigned herself to the happy knowledge that she had done some good today. A man - no, two men! - were to be maimed and possibly executed for crimes they committed under duress, and she not only saved them from such a fate but helped set them off on the possible path of redemption! That in and of itself was worthy of note. And so it was she took to noting it; scribbling in a small, weathered journal bound in the tanned hide of a cow her tribe had long ago stolen. In a way the journal was the perfect microcosm of her whole situation. Evil and corruption turned towards a force for goodness and change. Hopefully. She sat on the edge of the bed once more, feet swinging happily to and fro as she sketched out the days adventures. Sloppy amalgamations of Petros and Sval and Xan and Aleixo stood smiling and holding hands as a little Brim, illuminated in a radiant aura, holds her crook high over her head. She's smiling down at Dimi, who is giving a big thumbs up. Far to the side, with a frown on his reptillian face and engulfed in an aura of flame, Azul stands with his arms akimbo, shaking his head - small blackened lines motion around his head implying such a thing.  Happy with the lion's share of the drawing done, she continues drawing for the next couple of hours, adding in as many flowers and stars as she can fit.
Strange music drifts across the winds into Orion's Trading Post. Those sitting on the watchtower hear it first, an upbeat melody played out on on some sort of flute. The lilting tones are joined by what sound like drums at first, but quickly those listening can make out hoofbeats. A minute later, the source of the music arrives at the trading post gates. Atop a mare the color of the night sky sits a towering figure. The man has animal-like features and eyes like honey. At his lips is a panflute, that he continues to play for a moment after he stops riding. The stranger is dressed in Hellenian garb, though with the exotic addition of leopard and tiger pelts wrapped around his waist and padding his arms. He is also strapped with several other instruments, seemingly a one-man-band. As he drops the pipes, he takes a hand and adjusts his tangle of braided hair, allowing some to spill down over his burgundy cloak. "Greetings! Have I made it to Orion's Trading Post? Or has my bountiful luck finally run dry?" he calls to anyone around who will hear. His voice is deep but smooth as silk, and his smile gleams in the sunlight.
"He with the bandits?" Aleixo asks Dimi at his side, getting a shaking of the head in response he leans over. "You have, be careful though, the entrance is not quite what it should be, wait for someone to show you in, where have you come from? ."
"I come from the jungles far to the north, but now I wander near and far." he glances to the gate quizzically before looking back to the man. "Not quite what it should be?" he asks, disappointment in his voice. "I've been riding far too long and wish to rest. I have coin to spend and songs to share." Again he flashes his pearly smile and toys with a string of the lyre on his hip.
"Orion has gone to bed. I'll come and let you in, but be warned, we expect trouble here." He leaves Dimi on watch and comes to let the stranger in the gate, guiding him past the newly constructed traps.
"Trouble?" he asks with excitement as he eyes the traps pointed out to him by the stranger. Once safely inside he dismounts and with a wave of his hand the dust of the savannah is expelled from his person leaving his clothing and hair pristine. "I am Melanthios Nysaeus, bane of tyrants, bringer of ecstasy, devourer of beasts. What is your name, friend? And what is this trouble you expect?"
"Greetings Melanthios, I am Aleixo, my friends and I happened to arrive here as the trading post was being troubled by bandits, we fought them off, but one escaped and we are expecting retribution."
Xan's healing energy flows through Jerry, knitting the worst of the man's injuries together and slowly bringing him back to consciousness. The bandit's eyes flutter open and he glances about, clearly disoriented and in pain. "What-," he begins, starting to sit up, but then stopping again as a sharp pain shoots through him. "Who are you people?" Jerry asks in bewilderment, his breathing ragged.

"Didn't you hear him?" Sval asks, sitting down on the floor across from the bandit. "You have a choice. Repent and fight against your former allies. Your friend, Dimitrios has already joined us. Or, you can die right now. Up to you." He drums his fingers on the blade of his sword, which is resting across his knees, and waits for the bandit's choice.
Melanthios nods in understanding. "Ah yes, I've heard tales of these bandits. It is sad when those who have found freedom from the law turn to become the domineering lords they ran from. This was not the night of pleasant song and dance I had hoped for, but the celebrations that come after victory will be even sweeter. If these bandits return, I shall lend my magic to you and your friends."
"Most kind of you, I thought it only fair to warn. What brings you to these parts? If you don't mind I must return to the tower to watch, you are welcome to bring a skin and join me? If not, the others must be around in one of the buildings."
"Of course. I will join you in a moment, and I will tell you of my winding path." Melanthios takes a minute to find somewhere to tie up his mount before climbing the watchtower stairs to join Aleixo. He sits with his back to the rail and goes to hand the human his wineskin. "This is what brings me to these parts," he gestures with the skin before it is taken, and the sound of wine sloshes from within. "Where drink flows, there is happiness. Where there is happiness, ecstasy soon follows. Where there is ecstasy, there is magic. And with magic, chains can be broken and mysteries uncovered. Our minds and bodies can be transformed, life can spring forth from death. Does this make sense?"
Aleixo lays back smiling as he looks over the the palisade. "Oh, you are a man after my own heart. Drink, wine, food, happiness. I know not of magic, but these other things are what life is about. Broken chains, honour and glory. I like this." He takes a deep drink from the skin. "Dimitrios, let Sval and Xan know we have a visitor. Then get some rest, or perhaps a drink with us, perhaps find the goblin too, see if she would care to join us."
Melanthios smiles wide. "You would thrive among my people, feasting on wild boar and wine, running free through the forest at night, rolling with nymphs in the brush." he takes on a suggestive tone with the last line. He turns to Dimitrios as Aleixo addresses the ragged human. "Yes, bring them all!"
"That didn't work out so well last time." Aleixo sighs as his mind goes back to the memory of the glade. "Tell me of these jungles. How many days' ride?"
His eyes light up at Aleixo's words. "Many days, weeks even. But my path is never straight." he says with a wink. "But you said 'last time'? So you have taken part in the revels of Dionysus then?"
Jerry nods hesitantly, clearly not seeing much other choice in the matter. "Wh- where is Dimi?"
"I did. Or I thought I did. Many a time in the past for sure. This time was warped though. It started like usual, but then, nobody would leave. Next day they were all dead." Aleixo's eyes fill with sorrow as he recalls the events. "Some foul goat man tricked them into revelling past their limits. Worse, he was too coward to come out and fight me for them."
