Haydn F., that depends on the person running the game, but I would guess you generally don't, particularly considering the ability for a player to bring a character to the game has only just been added to Roll20 (the Character Vault). If you don't already have a group to play with, you would probably want to find a group first, then have them assist you in creating a character for their game.
I had to create a new acct how do I get to my game im in?

What sort of campaign? One that you were invited to or one you created?
Hello, I'm newbie on this site. I haven't any idea about it. This tutorial is nice. Can you help me out ? From where I should start it ? which softwares I've to download ? How can i make my own character ? That will be very nice of you ...
We'll be glad to help you out. Start by watching all the tutorials you can find. Continue by reading all the documentation you can find, including the Roll20 Wiki. Especially This Part Here . You already have all the software you need... unless you're NOT using Chrome and/or Firefox. If you are still using Explorer, you'll want to upgrade to one or the other of those browsers for full functionality. Character creation depends on the GM of the campaign you join, which you can try to find in the Looking For Group section of these forums. You will not be able to create a character until you're invited into a game, at which point you should discuss details with the GM of that game. Alternately, you can create your own game and invite others, in which case character creation is only one of many things you'll need to learn. Scroll up a few messages for my brief description of creating a game. Welcome to Roll20, and have fun! -Phnord
Hi all I'm new on here, but I'd like to see if I could run a campaign for some of my friends using this. Thing is I'm short on time so I'd rather not have to build the entire campaign from scratch. I saw the were some already made campaign modules but only a few, and the "show all" button doesn't seem to work. anyone know how to look at them all?

<a href="https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/modules" rel="nofollow">https://marketplace.roll20.net/browse/modules</a> We presently have 8 (with four of them being part of Adventure Quarterly package). We expect to see more of them coming down the pipe later this year.
Hello, I am new to tabletop games. I know how to role play, but the only problem i have is not with game mechanics because i can learn as i go. The only thing i am concerned with are the supplies i need to play. i know i don't the bare essentials like dice, pieces etc. The only thing i am not sure on is manuals. Do i need to buy player manuals, and books, or can i just jump right into a game without them? Also if i need them are there any books/manuals i can look up and download for free?

It depends on the game. Some RPGs have very comprehensive set of rules that requires a player to pick up a player's handout and possibly more books if they feel like playing special classes and using special skills. Some RPGs are rules light and the entire game is included in a single book. A lot of titles are available in PDF format which are often much cheaper than their printed counterparts. Some game systems use open game licenses and are free to pick up. Whatever you plan on playing, you should be at least be partially familiar with the rules.
Ok. I plan on playing a pathfinder campaign as my first what type of books do i need on that?
These.

Marvin M. said: Ok. I plan on playing a pathfinder campaign as my first what type of books do i need on that? You'll want to grab a copy of the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game Core Rulebook. There are more books available for more classes and races, but the Core Rulebook will get you all the basics you need.
Thanks for the help.
I'd like to see if i can run the Crow's nest island Module. but I'm not familiar with the pathfinders rule set. is it possible to run the module using D&D 4e?

You'd have to replace all the stats found in module with ones compatible with D&D 4E. Edit: Pathfinder is based off D&D 3.5E rule system, so it shouldn't look too alien when you review it. You'll probably run across the same classes/monsters/races that can be found in 4E so it should just be a matter of replacing the stat blocks.
Are all games done via video chat? Is there an interface that uses text or typing instead of video conferencing?
Hello, I'm trying to figure out how to write a macro that takes the result of a roll and subtracts it from a target's Attribute. This is for a nWod campaign and I have the following formula for a simple Punch: /r (@{strength} + @{brawl} + @{brawl punch} - @{target|defense})d10&gt;8! Now I want the result from that roll to be subtracted from the target's Health Attribute automatically. Can someone please assist?

If you are just wanting to know what the result is, you can just parenthesize the formula and subtract it from the target's health. If you want to update the targets health to that value, you would need the API (a mentor level feature).

You probably need to refer to your game's player's handbook. What game are you playing?

Probably you should discuss your questions about the system with your DM. If you have specific questions about the roll20 character sheet we could help you, but character creation is the purview of your DM.
Friends and I are switching off GM duty and want to use the same "Campaign" --- is it possible to lower MY permissions so that I am just a Player and then later join as a GM or do we have to make a new "Campaign" and copy all the assets over? Thanks! :)
In dire need of my 3.5 fix NOW!!!! been playing for years and moved away from my local group 5 years ago.... haven't played since.....want to get back into it but have no local gamers....or at least no one that wants to admit they do it......closet nerds...uuugh! anyone willing to help an old man down on his luck??

Michael, whoever created the campaign will always be the primary owner. However, you can can promote players to the GM roll and when you join, go to the settings (cog) and click "rejoin as player" at the bottom. You'll need to be careful not to see anything you shouldn't when you join. Alternatively, you can create a bookmark that lets you join as a player each time with a URL like this: <a href="https://app.roll20.net/editor/setcampaign/CAMPAIGN_ID/?desiredrole=player" rel="nofollow">https://app.roll20.net/editor/setcampaign/CAMPAIGN_ID/?desiredrole=player</a> Where CAMPAIGN_ID is replaced with the number for your campaign. You can find it in the URL when you go to the campaign's details page.
Hi, ya'll. Jeff here. I am a veteran 3.5 and 4.0 pencil and paper DM. I have several campaigns set up on a note pad in front of me right now, but can't quite figure out this roll20 interface. If anyone has the knowledge and time I would very much appreciate some assistance. I have the character sheets, core rule books, and several pre- made campaigns for 3.5, 4.0, and something called Pathfinder in pdf format downloaded. I also have Skype and Teamspeak.

Hi Jeff. Here's a quick summary of the steps to get you onto the tabletop. These are all covered in detail in the video at the top of this thread. There are a bunch of other videos showing various things you can do. Click Virtual Tabletop Click + Create New Campaign ( all of this can be changed later, so don't stress about it if you're not sure what you want ) Type a name for your campaign in Name & Tags Add tags, which are just short phrases that describe it. Choose a Character Sheet if you want one. Click I'm Ready, Create Campaign! You will now be loaded onto the virtual table top.

Jeff, I'd recommend watching the Roll20 Crash Course video series. They were designed for tabletop vets making the Roll20 transition.
Hello, I just started tonight and a picture of myself as the DM appeared at the bottom lefthand of the screen that does not move when I move the map and simply will not go away. I have left and returned to the campaign and it is still there. I don't seem to be able to highlight it but I can change the color of the bottom left pixel.... very strange and very, very fustrating when I'd like to start learning the rest of this, not spending an hour trying to make a photo disappear. HELP!

You can turn this off in the settings. Click the gear at the top left, scroll down and there is a drop down you can switch. I don't recall the precise name, but it should be obvious which one. Set it to "name only" edit: it's called: Player Avatar Size
How do you find your friends on here?

If you're the GM, you can send invites via personal email. This way you don't have to play IM tag to figure out who everyone's username is.
can not use the quote feature. hit the button, puts cursor in reply box with no quote.

Carl, that sounds like a bug. I'd recommend going to our Troubleshooting Wiki Page to see if that clears things up and then posting in the Bug Reports forum if you're still having issues.
Duplicate Page isn't working for me at all, in Chrome or Safari. I just get a blank page. Is this a bug that I should report?

The Duplicate Page action doesn't duplicate the content on the page. It duplicates the settings of that page (page size, grid specifications, measurement units, etc). To copy the content, you'll want to use the CTRL/CMD A to select all the graphic elements on a layer. Use CTRL/CMD C to copy and then CTRL/CMD V to paste it into the new page.
ok im having a really hard time trying to put tokens into the virtual tabletop. I have looked at some of the video tutorials that are out there and it all points to using the art work tab in the chat interface area. Problem is i do not have that art work tab and i cannot figure out how to get any tokens in the tabletop what so ever. I just bought a token pack thinking that would work but i cant use that one either. Any help would be really helpful as we start out first game next week and i have no idea what we are doing.

Jon, are you the GM of the campaign you are on? Or possibly logged in as a player via the settings tab?
Player I'm def not the GM lol.

That explains it. You can't add tokens to the tabletop unless you are the GM.

Dillon, you probably want to use our LFG system to find D&D or Pathfinder games that are meant for beginners.
So do I just give my GM my token then for my char?
