[LFG] Longtime roleplayer looking for *weekday* RPG experience.

Edited 1617665594
OK, after applying for five different games on Join A Game and not even getting an inbox response saying "We're full" or "We're not interested", I'm going to try this. Longtime roleplayer that is GMing two different private games on here (TSR's Marvel Advanced and CofC7E) currently and has run D&D5E in the past. But all I do is DM other than some random one-shots I've been invited to, and I want to actually participate in a *campaign* as a player. Prefer a good balance of roleplaying/combat, open to different DM playstyles, and I believe in respect of the GM and other players. Ultimately, I want to make new friends that just happen to roleplay together. And if I commit to a game (and especially if the DM and players give me a fair shot) I tend to bond to the game in a way that DMs and other players hopefully appreciate) Experienced in D&D5E and own a couple of sourcebooks. Experienced in CofC 7th Edition. Love superhero campaigns but I don't know systems other than TSR Marvel. Have played Pathfinder and Vampire: The Masquerade but not in awhile. Open to other systems depending on how flexible the GM is with my learning curve. Table must be nontoxic and welcoming to all, regardless of race, gender, orientation, disability, etc. (I personally am a straight white older male who is autistic, but have zero tolerance for any toxicity towards other players). That includes player and GM - nontraditional GMs especially welcome to invite me, but basic human kindness and respect is kind of a bare minimum. I am not against pay to play within reason, but I probably won't have a payment available until Friday April 9th at the earliest. I am medically retired, and I run my current games on the weekends, so I'm especially looking for games that play on the weekdays between 8 AM and 4 PM Eastern Daylight Time (US) so I'm not denying my wife my time in the evenings regularly. I unfortunately only know US English so that may limit overseas games that would be interested in me Thanks in advance for considering me. :)
Shawn, It sounds like you need to try some pay-to-play where there is much less toxicity given the nature of how paid games are. People tend to take things a bit more seriously and a lot of bad behavior can get weeded out. We have a code of conduct for example that everyone has to agree to before any game starts. You should come check us out! Maybe you'll see something that catches your interest. Right now we have a Vampire 20th Anniversary: Dark Ages game that is going to start soon with just a few more players. Here is the Roll20 LFP add for that game: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/9951283/lfp-paid-vampire-dark-ages-20th-anniversary-18-plus-deathshead-panoply-presents-the-italian-chronicles/?pageforid=9951283#post-9951283 Good luck with your search!
I'm currently running a Vampire the Masquerade V20 Edition game on Wednesday evening starting at 7.00pm BST (UK time). The game is set in the UK city of Sheffield in 2005 and is a mix of investigation and combat, not a game of politics and high intrigue that some Vampire games can become. While investitgaiion and role playing are important I also don't worry too much about the idea of it being a 'personal horror' game that Vampire can be pushed as. The game has been running for about a month, and while was a bit slow to start should be picking up pace soon, and I'm hoping it will be running for many months to come. I am also hoping to start a Cthulhu by Gaslight game at the start of May. This game is set for Monday afternoons starting at 1.00pm BST (UK time) and will be set in the UK in the late 1800. It will be a more episodal game, with each scenario expected to be completed in anything from 2 to 6 weeks depending on the investigators and players abilities to solve the mystery presented to them. Both games are listed as pay to play but I am only asking for tips so the player can decide what they thing the game has been worth. For the Vampire I am asking for payment after the last session of each month (which may be why a couple of players have decided to drop out) and for the Cthulhu game it would be requested after a scenario has finished. Should you be interested in either game or want more information about them please let me know either by PM on Roll20 or on Discord where I am known as Rinto#8567

Thanks. I actually did look at 1-2 pay for plays, submitted applications, and then never heard anything. :/ I will keep looking, though - thanks!
You can find games both here in the forum and through the "Join a Game" tab as you've figured out. Here's a guide to applying to games: The best advice I can give a new player here is BE PATIENT and be open to games other than 5E. 5E games are very popular. You will notice pretty much any 5E game in a good time slot will often have upwards of 50 applicants or more. All competing for 4 to 6 slots. You probably won't get accepted into the first game you apply to, nor your second, third, or eighth. Applying to games is somewhat of an art and I'll go into that a bit more below. Keep in mind, for pretty much any game, the GM will most likely NOT let you know you didn't get picked. Only the selected candidates usually get contacted by a GM. Don't take this personally. It's usually just too much work for a GM to send out 50 "Sorry" messages and they can't leave a general post in the LFG because it won't be visible as soon as the group is filled. On the other hand, there are a number of non-5E games out there you can cut your teeth on and get into relatively easily. There are a lot of fun systems out there now that are not D&D so just explore the Join Game section if you want. Some tips: 1. Pay attention to the game ad or listing and make sure you answer any questions the GM raises in there. If there's an application, be sure to answer all the questions. You don't need to write an essay but make sure the GM can get a feel for you as a player based on your responses. Good GMs don't take players first come, first serve. They're usually more interested in your characteristics as a player rather than your proposed character. 2. It's okay to apply to multiple games at once. 3. Don't get discouraged if you never hear from a GM about your application. Some people will let you know you didn't make it but most will just contact the people they are interested in selecting. 4. Pay attention to other players' applications and see what you can learn from them. If the GM has already picked some players for the game, see if you can find their applications in the listing and look for the things that seem to set them apart from the rest of the crowd. Learn from them what makes an application successful as you browse the game listings. 5. Look for GMs who seem to be picky about who they choose. This tends to make for a better game experience if you get in. 6. If you're anxious to get started ASAP, pay to play is an option. You can find those games in the game listings and here in the forum. There's usually little to no application process as long as you have the cash. In my experience, game quality is usually good but no better really than most responsible free GMs here. It's main advantage is being easy to get into one. 7. Don't give up. Don't get discouraged if your first games fall apart or aren't good. It can take a little while but eventually you will find the right games for you. 8. When using the Group Finder, don't tick off the Welcomes New Players Only box. A lot of people forget to set this when they list their game and fully 95% of GMs are open to new players as long as you're willing to make an effort to learn. Do tick off the Mature Content box. This isn't for ERP or erotic games. It typically means the game may not be suitable for young folks or people with highly sensitive ears. Adult language is expected, the game may touch on "adult" topics like drinking, drugs, etc. It's also commonly used in horror setting games because of depictions of graphic violence, etc.
Jesse said: A lot of really good advice Thanks for taking the time to go into detail like this. It is for sure a process, and I've already found at least one game that ticked my boxes and it's a Tip To Play. My biggest limitation with P2P is I only get paid once a month, but as long as a GM is willing to work with me, I'll generally go out of my way to work with them. :)
I'd just check in with the GM and ask. Lots of pay to play GMs give players a free season or two to evaluate whether the game is for them anyway, for example. And many will give a discount for players who pay monthly rather than weekly. Typically only charge you for 3 weeks if you pay monthly.
Some good tips from Jesse. I would emphasize their #1 point. I strive to respond to every applicant, but I admit I often don't bother with people who make it clear they didn't bother to read the blurb (or maybe they read it and just ignored every guideline?). If I post a detailed premise and a list of what resources are allowed and I say "If you want to play, suggest the sort of character you would like," and someone responds with a character that ignores all the limits... or only posts "I wanna play!"... well... I might not reply. You're availability is outside my offering days/times, so no game to offer you. If your weekends or Friday evening opens up, let me know.

Will do. And I do actively read the information/disclaimers on a game before posting. I think I might have just hit a bad run of "Only notifies those that made it" kind of GMs. It happens. :)
And speaking of reading information/disclaimers...:) I updated my original post to highlight my one non-negotiable, because I ended up having to back out of an offered game because the rest of players only had availability on US nights and weekend. :) Accidents happen, it's cool. All I'm saying is *TRY* to be sure that you're playing during US Weekday daytime before reaching out to me? It saves us both a lot of wasted time. Thanks everyone!
