Pathfinder - Looking to start weekly game.

I'm an experienced Pathfinder player and DM and I'm looking to run a weekly game (as DM, at least initially). Theme, style, and content are up to the players. Figure out a general idea and I can run with it. As for time, let's say Wednesday evenings at 7PM EST. If you're interested, you're welcome to post some suggestions for the game (setting, starting level, player goals, etc.) if you have a preference. Also, you're welcome to post alternate times if the posted time is not good for you.
I'd like to join.
I would like to partake in this adventure. 7PM EST on Wednesdays would work great for me (CST). I have never played Pathfinder before, my gaming d&d experience only consists of about 12ish hours of of 4e (local game I got started on Thursday nights with some friends). Let me know if noobs are welcome. Thanks!
I would also like to join 7PM EST sounds like a perfect time for me to play, i have played a little bit of pathfinder before and i know most of the basic rules. :)
Hi all, I'm pretty new to pathfinder, but I'd like to participate. Your time works perfectly fine for me. I suggest starting at level 1 (so newer players like Josh and I can get used to playing).
Might be up for it, I'm very familiar with the Pathfinder system and would be more than willing to help out anybody who is new to the game. Looking for a character/story focused game with a serious tone but plenty of fun. Wednesday sounds good.
Hey, would love to play. I am semi-experienced. I have played a couple of campaigns so i have the jist of what is going on. Id have to see if i could switch up my work schedule for weds nights though, shouldnt be a problem.
If you still have any slots open, I would love to play as well. Though I haven't really used roll20 yet, I do have experience with the Pathfinder system. My work schedule is currently pretty flexible so, it wouldn't be a problem to get Wednesday nights off.
I just learned about this roll20 business. However I'm a very experienced gamer, and relatively familiar with pathfinder. Atm I think that 7pm PST would work quite well for me (I'm on the west coast but only work til about 1pm on Weds. Looks like there's quite a bit of interest so far already, but please keep me in mind.
Pathfinder is a great game to play. For those that are unfamiliar, here is a web page to visit that will show you the information you need to play. <a href="http://www.d20pfsrd.com/" rel="nofollow">http://www.d20pfsrd.com/</a> I am currently in a game and I am playing an oracle with the clouded eyes curse and the flame mystery. Also as a bonus, since it was a small group (3 PCs) he allowed a template. So I am a half celestial oracle :-)
If you still need players, I'd be pleased to be able to participate. I don't have any direct experience with Pathfinder, but I'm an old hand at 3.5 so it shouldn't be too hard for me to pick up. I'm Eastern Time Zone, at any rate.
Alright, it looms like there's plenty of interest, so I will say that anyone who remembers to show up Wednesday is welcome to join. I am not afraid that we'll end up with a 10 person party or something because I don't expect everyone who posts in a random thread here to follow up on it. :P Though, if that does happen, we can make it work. I imagine that, even if we do get that many people, they won't all consistently be able to play at the same time and/or some will eventually move on. Until then, I won't go all crazy with combats and turn this into a Warhammer game. Anyway, for anyone following up, we'll start at Level 1. All the core races and classes are permitted. I'm a fan of most Paizo content, but I want to keep things pretty simple (especially for new players). If you're experienced (or a particularly zealous reader), I will allow other races and classes (and alternate racial traits/class archetypes as well) if you run them by me first. I will state this, though: No Cavaliers, Samurai, Gunslingers, or Summoners, please. Whatever you choose, I recommend you post it here so we can have a well rounded party. I hope to see all the bases covered because it gives me more freedom and it allows players to shine individually on a regular basis. Here's creation rules: - Level 1 - Standard Point Buy (for Ability Scores) - Average starting gold for your class. - I start everyone with a tent, backpack, bedroll, waterskin, and 10 days of rations. The party, collectively, also gets 50 feet of rope and a grappling hook. No need to buy these things redundantly if you don't want to. - You can spend your gold on any non-magical gear that you wish and up to 75gp on potions or scrolls or other such expendable magic thingies. - Full hit die starting HP (+ CON bonus). - We'll use favored class bonuses as described in the book. (If you take a level in your favored class, you get a bonus HP or skill point.) If you're new, this is a good place to start: <a href="http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/gettingStarted.html" rel="nofollow">http://paizo.com/pathfinderRPG/prd/gettingStarted.html</a> If anyone has any questions, big or small, post them. For anyone looking to do something that isn't in the core rulebook, consider the Advanced Player's Guide, Ultimate Magic, and Ultimate Combat as probably allowed, but don't count on anything beyond those. Ask in any case, regardless. If you're looking for viable non-standard races, look here: <a href="http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/monsters-as-pcs" rel="nofollow">http://www.d20pfsrd.com/races/monsters-as-pcs</a> (Drow Nobles and Tieflings are out for this campaign for sure.)
Again, especially for new players, feel free to ask questions. Knowing how much there is in the Pathfinder rulebook, I do not fear mountains of questions and concerns. I expect most of those questions to be about combat, especially combat maneuvers. I work tomorrow afternoon and most of that time is spent browsing reddit or Facebook (I just scan stuff and do data entry, mostly), so I'll have plenty of time to help... :D
Hi Marcus, thanks for the update. I'm definitely still interested. You mentioned that we cannot play as Drow Nobles or Tieflings. I was planning on playing a (non-noble) Drow Rogue. Is this okay? Or are regular Drow out as well?
I'm definitely interested. Will the first game be happening this wednesday (the 20th)?
@Cheddar - Regular Drow are fine. People using Drow, Duergar, or Svirfneblin can ignore the light blindness feature, but I also ask that they know Common to start in place of Undercommon. (They'd still get Elven, Dwarven, or Gnome, respectively, and can still learn undercommon through high INT or through linguistics.) Also, no pure Orcs. I forgot that. That +4 STR can end up being unreasonably powerful. @Darren - If we can get enough people ready and able by then, we will play. If people won't be ready by that day, they'd still be welcome to play starting on the following meeting.
As for theme and play style, nobody will be require to first-person role play. Discussion can happen in third person and can have a hearty bit of meta-talk to it. I know that a lot of people are intimidated by the actual role playing (or simply don't prefer it), so you can avoid that. You're welcome to emote as your character or, even, play entirely in character. I'm just saying you don't HAVE to. However, if you wish to confer messages to another player (such as signals or information), your characters must actually do so verbally or physically (and, if it's particularly complex body language, sense motive may be needed :P). For example, if Player X sees a shady NPC handling a dagger in his pocket, he'd need to be extra crafty to let Player Y know without tipping off the NPC. (I'll avoid whispering messages to players because, even though it's often handy, it can lead to chaos. Virtual tabletop chat windows get crazy...) As far as theme goes, it will be largely serious, but more towards "high fantasy" than "sword and sorcery". So, basically, more Narnia/LotR and less Conan. The universe won't be based on any published adventure path. It'll all be my own cities and kingdoms and such. Also, to anyone that sees this, have a defined religious stance. Either have your character follow a Pathfinder deity (has to be 1 step away from their alignment or closer), be an "atheist" (in quotes because everyone in the Pathfinder-verse knows the gods exist, but atheists want nothing to do with them), or have a meaningful personal philosophy. Lawful characters definitely ought to have SOME sort of allegiance beyond themselves, whether it's to a god or not. A general backstory, as deep as you want it to be, is also encouraged (but not required). If you don't provide one, I will make assumptions. It's fun interweaving character backgrounds into the campaign, so whatever you provide will be of use to me.
A couple of questions for you, Marcus: 1. Are there any alignment restrictions for your game? 2. Is there a particular adventure path you're running, and will it be set in the pathfinder setting? 3. Are the alternative favored class option in the Advanced Player's Guide allowed? 4. Is there a theme or particular type of character background you're looking for? Thanks. :)
1. Oh, good question. No evil. Everything else is fine. 2. We won't be using any official adventure paths or campaign settings. It's all stuff that I've made up. However, it won't be anything unusual. 3. Yea, you can use those. Remember that everything rounds down and some of that stuff gives you partial points (so you won't see benefit until 2nd or 4th level or whatever). 4. The universe that we'll use has a bit of everything, so whatever you come up with should fit somewhere. Generic fantasy, gothic horror, steampunk, and etc. is all covered. As far as content, something that outlines a character's motivations and where they came from is ideal.
Great! Drow rogue it is. And the universe already sounds pretty interesting. Will you be giving us information about your universe (so we can create backgrounds based off of it)?
expressing interest though seem to have dropped the ball on this one too. looks full. :(
Just a quick question Marcus, would the Magus class from the Ultimate Magic book allowed?
@Cheddar - I actually made the universe for a campaign that never started with some friends. I can post background here or somewhere soon. @punk - You're welcome to make something and show up Wednesday. Only 2-4 people have followed up on their original post. @Robbie Marks - Yea, if you know how to use it. If you haven't played it before, it's pretty cool, but streaky. You'll have combats where you'll 1 shot stuff and combats where you'll miss every spell and attack you try... :P
Hey Marcus, was wondering if I could still maybe jump in. Thinking of playing a Two-Handed Fighter.
Just wondering what characters we have thus far. The ones I've heard mentioned are: Rogue, Fighter, and Magus. Sounds like room for a number of options. Thinking ranger. Race is up in the air, but I like the idea of a half-elf, as the social stigma lends itself well to the ranger lifestyle. This sound ok? Also, how long will the session go? Also, what is your take on traits, hero points, etc?
Ok, right now, I'm only really expecting the people who have followed up their original post (or who have posted since I provided info or who have PMed me) to actually be the ones to show up. Here's who I expect. CheddarCheese - Drow Rogue Darren Williams - ??? Robbie Marks - Magus (Maybe) Brendan Forte - Two-Handed Fighter Darcy Lindberg - Half-Elf Ranger (Maybe) Dat Psyker (PM'd me) - Whatever is Needed Miles (PM'd me) - Human Monk punk 92 - ??? Now, that's 8 people. Ideally, a party is 3-6 players. However, people probably won't consistently be around every Wednesday and I don't expect the above to all stick around for the whole campaign (as, occasionally, real life becomes a priority), so I expect we'll work out to an effective 5 or 6 person party on any given night. If we DO end up with a consistent 7 or 8 person party, we can make it work. If people who haven't decided want to know what we need, a Sorcerer/Wizard/Witch would be nice and definitely a divine caster would help. @Darcy - Half-Elf Ranger is fine. Sessions would probably be 2-3 hours. We can run as long or short as people want, though. I really like traits and hero points, but let's not go into those for now for the sake of new people and people coming over from 3.5 or whatever.
Also, important note: The first session will have a lot of logistics junk going on in the beginning. I'll want to get an idea of everyone's character and you'll probably want some time to work out macros and stuff. We might not get into the actual campaign until 8ish. I'll probably be online before 7 and I'll send the campaign links early. (They'll come via PM.) If you want to get your stuff sorted out or want to ask questions ahead of time, you can head over before 7.
As some have requested, here's where you can find info on the world: <a href="https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VOsPxAuc6oDJX8w9vhw-gVi_mNHK0afi9Jt__AASDKw/edit" rel="nofollow">https://docs.google.com/document/d/1VOsPxAuc6oDJX8w9vhw-gVi_mNHK0afi9Jt__AASDKw/edit</a> By no means do you have to know any of that, but it should be helpful in creating a backstory (if you haven't already created one).
So from what I gather skimming the background, elves pretty much have blended in with the rest of the population? What's the general degree of racial tolerance/tension?
It depends on the location. The world, overall, is pretty tolerant and diverse. People tend to stereotype elves as arrogant and elitist and half-elves tend to get taunted by humans with the implication that their elf parent had to "settle". As with most stereotypes, some elves are actually like this and plenty aren't. Generally, elves don't like dwarves because of long past wars with them. There are sects of elves who are separatists and form exclusive communities and dislike all other races. However, there are also odd communities of elves that believe the stories of the elves beginning as forest folk. These groups are small and live in the Unending forest, within a few miles of the edges. Humans are the most common race and, as a result, aren't really stereotyped for anything. If anything, they're considered dull or stupid. Dwarves tend to be rude and hedonistic, so people tend to have low social expectations of them, but they tend to not really care what the other races thing. They don't like elves either. Halflings are stereotyped as being like the halflings from Lord of the Rings, actually. (Simple, peaceful folk who only care about food and merriment.) However, halflings have plenty of room for tenacity and worldliness. Gnomes are universally considered weird. They're a less populous race and pretty much everyone is freaked out by them. They typically have very strange social quirks and habits, so this makes sense. Orcs don't show their faces in society, usually, outside of small numbers in Worgengard. They're less developed mentally than most of the other races and are almost always vicious. Half-orcs are barely any better. There are intelligent and even-keeled Half-orcs, but the vast majority of them are thugs and the other races expect them to be that way. Other races (like ratfolk and vanara) can also be found, but they're not common enough for other races to generally have a strong opinion of them in a general sense. Quick reference: Dwarves and elves don't really like each other. Most races think dwarves are disgusting or rude, and many of them are. Most races think elves are elitist and arrogant, but most aren't. Half-elves are vaguely joked about by humans, but are usually looked at as human by other races. Everybody thinks gnomes are weird. Most races underestimate halflings and they tend to try overcompensating. Orcs (and half-orcs) are seen as lesser beings, though some half-orcs are upstanding people. Humans are pretty vanilla, for better or worse.
Alrighty, I've decided on playing an alchemist; I can provide blasting, some buffing, and even healing when the situation calls for it. I'm still deciding on a race.
A little late, I'll be around on Wednesday in case there ends up being a few missing people. I'll have a Cleric rolled up, cuz I'm a team player ;)
@Darren - If I didn't ban Tiefling, they would be perfect for an Alchemist. (I really only banned them because they tend to be evil in my universe, like pure Orcs.) Elves make good alchemists because of that +2 to INT. Same with Humans and Half-Elves (but not so much Half-Orcs UNLESS you build for heavy mutagen use). If you're going for bombs, small characters would be good too because they get that +1 to hit and missing with a bomb before you get Precise Bombs can be a disaster... haha
Hi Marcus, I'm going to roll up a Bard and show on Wednesday in case there is any room :) No pathfinder experience, but I've played d&d from basic to 3.0, and read a bit on pathfinder. I'll send you the character sheet when I'm done.
Alright, sounds good.
I have a human fighter fleshed out for a character. Should I PM you my character sheet and backstory, Marcus? Oh, and by standard point buy do you mean in the Core Rulebook the Standard Fantasy Setting 15 point buy or the 20 High Fantasy Setting point buy? Just want to be sure.
Yea, send me whatever you have. Also, it's a 15 point buy.
One more question. How do you feel about the urban ranger subclass from the advanced players guide?
Unfortunately, it seems I won't be able to make it to this weeks game; a family issue has come up, one that I am forced to attend. I am still interested in playing, and hope I can join next weeks session.
Hey, i have never played a rpg before, well not the "real" rpg anyway :P And I would love to try it. so i was wondering if you would let me watch you play tonights game. I would love to see how its played and get a general idea of what im getting myself into, and maybe i could join with a character of my own next week :)
Yea, you're welcome to watch. The first session is usually a little boring in the beginning as everyone is getting situated, but it picks up.
thank you :) Would like to see how you get ready aswell so i see how everything is done ^^
Ok, it's getting close. I need to actually get some more stuff on paper and set up in the campaign room now and then I'l send out the links. I've got the general over-arching script of the campaign done and probably a night's worth of encounters, but I need to have some alternatives set up for different possible numbers of people that we get and such. Bear with me as the first meeting is always rough seas, but it gets going good pretty quickly.
Just so I'm sure I've done the math right, we're at T-1.5 hours approximately?
Math scares me, but I think you're right if it's 7 EST.
1 hour from now is start time.
Is your game full? I'm going to start making a character in case it's not.
I'm not really sure how many we have tonight, so show up and we'll see... haha.. (As I think I PM'd you already.) I need to add one more map (and encounter) and we should be set. I may be 5-10 minutes late. My apologies.
Where the links to the room already sent out?
I missed the links as well.
The links are not out yet, fellas. Quick question, Marcus. Do you want us to send you copies of our characters? If so, where should we send em? Also, is there a specific format you'd like them in?
