Crypts of the Ashen Kings is a new sword & sorcery
campaign using old-school D&D rules. First published in 1974, these rules
were re-imagined in 2008 as Swords & Wizardry, and fine-tuned for this
particular genre in 2016 as Crypts & Things . The
setting and tone for this game are similar to the Hyborian Age stories of Robert
E. Howard. Conan the Barbarian would feel right at home here.
This is my first experience with Crypts & Things, but I
have been DM’ing similar versions of D&D, off and on, for 40 years.
In this setting, all characters are humans, although they
come from various cultures. They work together as a band of friends to achieve
their personal goals of wealth, glory, and power in a violent and unforgiving
world. Magic is frightful and dangerous. Those who deal in it are generally
viewed as madmen or worse. Available classes are: Barbarian, Fighter, Monk, Sorcerer,
and Thief.
During their adventures, characters will hear rumors of mysterious
ruins and hidden treasures. They will be offered jobs by wealthy nobles in need
of help. Characters can make a name for themselves by striking blows against vile
sorcerers, petty chieftains, and demonic invaders. Whatever goal they choose to
pursue becomes the next adventure. Progression comes from participation,
reaching milestones in the pursuit of specific goals, and from the conspicuous
spending of their hard-earned loot.
Players will experience a mix of exploration, role play, and
combat. Exploration will include both wilderness and small dungeon environments.
Role play will be centered on the party’s active pursuit of their goals. I
believe that good role play is about why characters make the decisions that
they do, not about how we speak at the table. I am not a stage actor and don’t
expect you to be. Combat will be fast and brutal, but will not dominate the campaign.
Healing magic is uncommon in this setting so constant fighting is not an
option.
We will use discord for voice and between-game messaging.
Roll20 is used for visuals and die rolling. You must have a solid internet connection,
good microphone/headset, clean audio environment, and be willing and able to
resolve any technical issues that impact game play for others.
We will play a 3-hour session every other Wednesday from
7:00 to 10:00 pm EST. Our start date is tentative and depends on getting five
interested players. I’d love to hold our first session on June 23 rd .
If you are interested in joining, please post in the
application thread. Here is the Roll20
