D&D campaign idea

I am working on a story/campaign for potential addition to one of my games and just wanting some ideas as well. There is a growing town growing prosperous from harvesting the lumber, fish and minerals from the nearby mountains. The central mountain is one of the largest on whole of Toril. Without warning the largest mine collapses and hundreds are missing as cave-ins reach down to the town. And the PCs are there resting/born there when all this happens. They discover near the entrance "The breath brings new beginnings while in the earth the past sleeps." and discover that walking through the tunnels and where you emerge in a new point in time. If they go down first they discover that the survivors of the mine collapse founded the town. The further up they go the more distant into the future they can go. Between 200 and 500 years into the future the city is in ruin and the area is dead and gone. I am working on they are seeing their actions ripple through time both backwards and forwards. Any ideas on what else to do?
Have the time shenanigans be also due to a cult that arose in the town. Perhaps one that worships Elder Evils/Aberrations/Star Spawn. Essentially the time loop is mass human sacrifice to  alienesque monsters that dwelt beneath the mountain connecting to the Underdark/Far Realm. Survivors make a pact to live/gain power as town founders.
