How do you run Exalted?

Hi all, I'm a long-term Exalted GM, but pretty new to Roll20. I'm interested in setting up an online Exalted game between some friends from home, but I'm just wondering what kind of experience everyone else has had using Roll20 for Exalted? It doesn't seem like the kind of game that would benefit from maps and tokens; do you use the maps like with a D&D game, having people move their tokens about, or do you just use the system to show relevant images and basically play directly through text, like an IRC game? I hope I'm making some sense!

I don't run Exalted (haven't even played it), but the table top isn't completely necessary to run a game. Just use it the same way you would your dinner table when running a game. Our group really only uses it when we are fighting something and may be needed to help explain positioning of all the participants (we tend to have some pretty big fights). One thing that is useful, even if you don't use the battle map for fights, setting up the tokens for each player that's tied to a character sheet. That way they can also set up Token Actions that make some of the rolling a little easier. As for the chatting...we use Skype...it's just easier to talk than type. :)

I haven't played Exalted on Roll20 (my group discovered Roll20 after Ex3 was announced, and we're all waiting with baited breath for its release), however I am the author of the Exalted character sheet. I strongly recommend following the instructions in the description of the Exalted character sheet, setting up two rollable tables instead of simply rolling d10s. The dice system doesn't really support the system of 7-9 = 1 success, 10 = 2 successes (except on damage rolls), 1 = botch (if there are 0 successes). So, create rollable tables instead. For regular rolls, your table looks like: Value Weight botch 1 0 5 1 3 2 1 For damage rolls, your table looks like: Value Weight 0 6 1 4 If Sidereals show up in the campaign and start futzing around with ascending and descending destinies, you'd have to make additional tables. If you use inline rolls, the text "botch" will only show up if you get 0 successes and the first die is a botch, so for that reason I recommend using the regular /roll or /r command instead of inline rolls. If your first table is named "exalted" (as the character sheet expects), you would roll with for example /r 5t[exalted] while a damage roll might be /r 3t[exalted-damage] The character sheet as it stands only directly supports Solar characters, although most exalt types can be represented on that sheet. (Lunars and Alchemicals won't be able to store their favored Attributes.) The sheet also doesn't support Attributes at 0, although that can only come about by being an unlucky target of Rune of Singular Hatred, by an overuse of Flaws (that the ST ought to clamp down on, IMO), or by custom Charms/Sorcery. If there are any problems you encounter with the sheet, make a post in the Character Sheets forum, I glance at it at least once a day. =) (Edit: I'm assuming you're running Exalted 2e, or 2e with the "2.5e" Scroll of Errata. If you're running first edition, the Exalted sheet doesn't apply and you'd need slightly different rollable tables.)
Thanks for the advice; I guess I was just wondering what use people make of the online resources for their Exalted games. I had always thought of the roll20 area as a classic battle grid, but I suppose you could just use it as a virtual tabletop, as you say.

You can also turn the grid off on a per-page basis, in case you feel like supplying an area map to have the players move about in but without the restriction of grid squares.
