"Given time, of course you could," Francis assures Rae. "Parker will bring you the money by. Two cases?"
Rae nods.  "That would be great. Thank you, Francis. I'll be in touch later tonight as we begin to mobilize."
"Good luck." The dark silhouette unravels like wisps of smoke caught in an unseen breeze. Shadows bleed into the reflective surface, pooling briefly in the corners of the mirror before being absorbed completely. The glowing eyes of the figure linger a moment longer, flickering like dying embers before vanishing with a faint ripple across the glass, as if the mirror were made of water. Once the image is gone, the mirror dims unnaturally, before returning to its normal reflective state.

Rae watches with fascination as the umbral form in the mirror dissipate into the natural shadows of the object.  She tentatively reaches for the reflective surface, as though contact would impart some secret of the skill she'd witnessed. Such wonders, such possibility . She cannot stop herself from dropping into a seated, meditative position before the mirror, closing her eyes and stepping into a manner of primal dance with her tenebrous Beast. In this, she attempts to match its muted movements, coaxing it into resonance with her body and draw from it a new application of its strength. Look another way, and the Mekhet is merely breathing, low and slow, as her eyes move about rapidly beneath their lids.  Once she feels that her Beast is aligned with her intent, she pulls an older, slower partner into their rhythm. That which has lied with humanity since their first frightened steps into the world. That which has sheltered Kindred since time immemorial, allowing us to live in the nightmares of Kine and move unseen through the supernatural world. The force that revealed its true face in Merric's blood. It interred her, it wed her, it birthed her.   Beloved. Master. Monster. Slave. Salvation.   The shadows of the space writhe and pulse in Rae's direction, and rather than plunge into them as she had done before, she instead projects herself into the mirror in front of her.
The room seems to darken subtly as Rae focuses inward. Her thoughts sink into the depths of the shadows around her and the flickering edges of the shadows in the room respond, pooling faintly on the mirror’s surface. As her will presses against the barrier between the tangible and the ephemeral, she feels a strange tugging, as though her very essence is being drawn forward. The mirror’s surface begins to shimmer, distort, and ripple, faint dark tendrils unfurling within the reflection, twisting like smoke in a vacuum. For a moment, she sees flashes of her own face in the mirror — stretched and distorted by the inky tendrils. The attempt feels incomplete, like a half-formed thought. The shadows writhe, yet refuse to coalesce into anything stable. Instead, Rae hears faint, half-whispered voices echoing within her mind — not fully her own, but ancient and distant. A momentary glimpse of glowing eyes pierces the reflection before the shadows recoil violently and the mirror snaps back to its normal, polished surface. Rae is left with an aching void in her chest, as though part of her was stretched too far and failed to break free.
With a sudden twisting of some unseen tide, the communion had turned back on her and left her momentarily terrified. Mind invaded and soul distended, she had attempted too much too quickly and the dark's reproach was unmistakable. But this were merely a warning, for something had seen her just as she had seen it.  For a short time she remains seated, slowly coming back to herself as the aching in her chest dissipates. When she is finally comfortable again, she stands and shivers, looking to Lotus on her bed.  "Almost had it. But that was definitely a polite 'fuck off'. Something for later down the road, then."  She lays down, gently petting the black cat as its eyes bore into her.  "Hopefully Merric and Khalid's ritual is a lot more successful than that little stunt."

[ Continued from Christ Church ] "Gladly"  Merric responds with a genuine smile, as he presses the doorbell awaiting an answer.

At the chime of the doorbell Rae hops up, checking her phone to see if any of her expected visitors has messaged about their arrival. Reaching the door in moments, she opens it to see her Death mage friend standing expectantly beside the Life mage with whom she had spent part of that impossible evening so many nights ago.  The sight of them together brings an irrepressible smile to her face. "Hello Merric! And Khalid, hello!" She gives both of them a polite hug as she welcomes them into the flat. "Thank you for coming on such short notice, as well as for your willingness to help. You will both be well compensated for your assistance, I assure you." Leading the boys through the flat and into her bedroom, she takes a seat at her desk, offering the pair armchairs on the other side of the room.  "I hope that you're both well this evening?" She reaches out a hand to the nearby Lotus, offering him pets.
Reciprocating the smile and hug, Merric enters the flat  and takes in his surroundings.  "Thanks for having us, I'm sure a lot has happened since we last met."
Rae nods.  "Quite a lot. For context, Khalid, I've recently awoken abilities related to my bloodline. We're known as the Khaibit by the larger Kindred world, with ties to ancient Egypt and the realm of Twilight. We wield shadow and darkness in order to combat the Strix and other foes." "After we'd met, Merric, I'd gone to Brasenose to turn myself in, when my grandsire appeared. He scared off the Kindred of the Circle of the Crone and took me to his home here in Oxford where he began training me. I hadn't had very fond sentiments in his regard before meeting him, but he's amenable and seemingly singular in both skill and purpose, his name carries alot of weight to the Kindred here." "He's going to help me tonight, as my brother was recently kidnapped by a Strix that has been hunting me. It possessed a Kindred professor specifically to use my brother as leverage, to toy with me and draw me out. That is why I need the help of both of you. My abilities are nascent and I do not have the luxury of time needed for them to naturally deepen. So-" She reaches into a satchel beside her desk, producing the Dasani water bottle. Filled with a gray smoke and engraved with runes on the cap, the bottle shakes and rattles violently in response to Rae's proximity.  "-I ask both of you if there is a ritual we could perform to strengthen my connection to the shadows, using this soul as a catalyst for the ritual. The realm to which you are connected, Merric, is the one of the homes of the great darkness that I draw my abilities from. At least, that's my going theory."
Khalid settles into the familiar apartment, his gaze lingering on Rae before snapping to the soul jar.  He looks over to Merric before crossing his arms, "I can't speak for Merric's capabilities, but I deal in mostly the tangible. So I'm not sure I'll be much help in that respect, but I could make you resilient not sure how much help that'll be against whatever a Strix is though." He pauses for a moment before remarking on what Rae had said earlier, "You're going tonight right? How much time do we have and do you need more help than just the rituals we can provide. Not that I want to put myself in more danger, but this thing seems bad news for everyone."
"Yes, I'll be going tonight. And while time is of the essence, I wouldn't want either of you thrown into the fray with a Strix. They're despotic malice incarnate, Khalid. Creatures of Twilight, older than humanity and thought to be tied to Kindred in some intrinsic way. They exist to cause agony and terror, possessing Kine and Kindred alike to eviscerate and violate whatever they can get their claws on...and one has my idiot brother. As far as your abilities, I imagine that they will be the balancing portion of the equation needed to perform the ritual successfully. Augmenting me while Merric deepens my connection to the shadows will hopefully allow me to gain enough strength to fight the Strix on even footing." She sits back, then realizes that she hadn't assuaged Khalid's concern about her going it alone.  "And Aubrey will be with me, as well as my grandsire. We have the loose formings of a plan, but we're also ready for things to hit the fan and improvise from there. You know we're good at that." She gives him a cock-sure smile that seems a touch out of character, hoping that he won't worry. Or worse, tell Eve.
"Yeah, last time we had to improvise I remember having to run away while hauling Eve, then stopping you from eating the old man. Speaking of, haven't heard from her in a while, she with your grandsire or whatever?" Khalid shuffles uncomfortably, recalling their last encounter. "Either way, I could enhance a few people, not just you. Wouldn't take much more effort on my end."  He begins too look around the apartment for a suitable ritual space, before turning back towards Rae. "Do we have at least three hours?"

Rae is quietly brought back to that night when the order that she had come to know of Kindred society at Oxford was torn asunder. It's hard to believe that so little time had truly passed since then.  "Yes, and I thank you again for stopping me that night. I've come to know that if I had, it would've opened a world of problems for me that I'm not equipped to handle. I'm hardly equipped to handle my ongoing problems. Anyway-" She checks her phone for a text from Lyra, then places it back onto her desk.  "Yes, Eve is currently with her maker and husband, Francis de la Fontaine. I've felt that she's alright through our blood sympathy, which is the connections between all Kindred of shared origin, the strongest of which are between a Kindred and their childe. Their reunion has been quite passionate ." Her voice is tinged with discomfort as she emphasizes this last word.  "So, if three hours is what is required then three hours it what we will take. And it's very good to know that you can enhance multiple people, I would like to ask you to augment my ghoul and girlfriend Lyra once she arrives."
Khalid busies himself preparing for the duration of the ritual as Rae speaks, a brief grimace flashes across Khalid's face at the mention of Francis and Eve.  "I can do five and it'll last for a day."   He sets his bag down and empties most of his belongings from his pocket, save for his phone and gloves, "I'll need to get my heartrate up, so I'm gonna run around the block a few times. Not sure I can help with whatever Merric want's to pull off so I'd do that while I'm prepping."   He heads out of the apartment pulling his phone out as he leaves and sends Aubrey a quick message To Aubrey: I heard from Rae that you'll be heading out to hunt Strix tonight, I'm working on something to help but you'll need to be at her apartment in three hours if you want it. He hesitated, his thumb hovering over the send button, before relenting. He hoped that was enough to convince her to come, but for the moment he had other tasks to tend to. He began to jog, centering his focus on the rote techniques of the Adamantine Arrow.
Continued from Brasenose ... Aubrey's trip through town was quick but efficient, stopping at the now-familiar rack of the club Baby Love to seek and siphon from whatever lucky mortal found itself in her path that evening. Unlike her usual self, she scarcely paid much mind to the human beyond whatever meager effort it took of her to coerce them away from their friends and into private, where she could hurriedly give them as much ecstasy through her *kiss* as was possible to experience with a dozen tabs of, well, actual ecstasy. Sufficiently gorged and satisfied, she starts to turn her attention to the night's main objective: The hunt, at which point it occurred to her that Francis had been rather mum on the exact locale or nature of their plan. Taking out her phone, however, she felt her shoulders relax and the brief flirtation with tension leave her as she read a message from Khalid, of all people. Must have come in while I was on my way to the club. I heard from Rae that you'll be heading out to hunt Strix tonight, I'm working on something to help but you'll need to be at her apartment in three hours if you want it. Oh? She writes back quickly. Is that so? And is Rae-rae okay-kay with that? Actually nvm, I'll be there shortly. With that she rechecked the address she'd gotten from that hacker Mi... Michel? Miguel, perhaps? She shakes her head, making for Rae's. When she does arrive, she knocks on the door with a rhythmic series of short but firm raps.
Rae turns away from Merric to the sound of the knocking, noting that Lyra usually rang the doorbell.  "She may be on edge, given what's going on."  Stepping away, she arrives at the door with a smile to assuage and reassure her darling, only to be met with the piercing eyes and rose-scented perfume of Aubrey Knight. The tenderness falls from her face like a lead balloon, replaced with surprise and confusion.  "Aubrey. I thought we'd be meeting at Kebl-" She stops as a detail catches her attention. "How did you find my flat?" She looks past Aubrey to the street, searching for Khalid.  "The mage told you, didn't he? Presumptuous...Come in. I hope your evening has been pleasant. Merric, the mage who captured the soul I showed you, is preparing a ritual in the bedroom."
Aubrey reciprocates the obvious cheer in Rae’s face with a plastic smile. “Rae-rae don’t be cray-cray! You think I need a mage’s help using Google maps? Tsk.  The Circle knows everything, love.”  The fake smile melts away for a fraction of a second, then snaps back into place like a rubber band, and she laughs. “I had to track you down only a few days ago. I already knew. Now  who’s being presumptuous?”  Strutting past her host and into the flat proper, she surveils the banality around her with an unwavering grin. “I shall be honest with you, I expected a lot more grey and perhaps a Jane Austen poster or something. “Read, Laugh, Love” pillows, perhaps. So where’s this spell going down? Quite keen to see some genuine Hocus Pocus ing, especially if it’ll like, help deal with your personal issues.”
Rae heaves a sigh of such magnitude that her entire frame rattles in the wake of it. She considers addressing any single aspect of the haunting turn-of-the-millennia things Aubrey had just said and finds the task too arduous and terrible to follow through on. Instead, she just walks back to the bedroom, expecting her acquaintance to follow.  "I feel as though this will only encourage you, but please allow Merric and I to work in a modicum of silence."

As Rae explains the details of her night, Merric's head races with new thoughts, assumptions, and theories. He pulls out a pocket notebook, jotting down key points of interest, Khaibit, Twilight, Strix, Circle of the Crone. He closes his notebook and returns to meet Rae's gaze, "That's quite the tale, I'm glad things ended alright for you for the most part."  He breaks eye contact to match Khalid's gaze for a moment as he speaks. He then looks down pensively, "I've never tried mixing the effect of a Life spell with one of my own. Honestly, I'm curious as to what the outcome could be, but it may be dangerous." He pauses to think about it, "You mentioned trying to deepen your connection to the shadows. I'm familiar with shadow manipulation, so your request seems doable.  Khalid leaves for his jog.  "While Khalid, prepares for his spell, I should begin preparation as well. Would you mind showing me the darkest part of your flat? If you have some candles too that would be great."

Having returned with Aubrey, Rae nods in understanding. "Thank you. And the darkest space in the flat would be this room. The darkness here has been much deeper ever since my transformation." She then gestured lightly towards Bri. "This is my associate Aubrey Knight. She's a Daeva, and will be accompanying me tonight alongside my grand-sire. I believe that I have ritual candles right around..."  She looks through several drawers before producing several long, black candles and small, octagonal glass plates to rest them on.  "I strain your altruism, but is there a way to focus the spell on the manipulation of weapons with shadow? Only weapons coated in our shadow can truly harm Strix, outside of sunlight and I believe fire under the right circumstance."
Aubrey follows Rae through to the ritual site, motioning with her hand to ‘zip’ her own mouth closed in an implicitly tacit understanding of the Mekhet’s request. And for the entire walk there, she keeps to her gestured word, keeping quiet so that she could instead take in every milquetoast mundanity of the home — details that would surely make for ample teasing fodder later. Unfortunately by the time she’s looking upon the second mage she’d ever met in as many weeks, that promise was out the window. ”I’d no idea Khalid had other magic friends,”  she greets the young man with a delighted smile, “Rae-rae you can’t just half  introduce someone. You must be Merric, yes?
Merric follows Rae's gestures into the room best suited for the ritual, as she introduces her vampire associate, Merric's mind returns to the current moment and to the new woman in front of him, "Y-yes... I-I mean. Yes! Hello! My name is Merric, hello." He pauses awkwardly, embarrassed at the fact he said hello again. "Y-your name is Aubrey, right? Rae said you're a diva?" Rae's question about the spell snaps Merric's attention back and releases him from his own awkwardness. "Hmm, my experience with shadow weapons involves creating usable weapons out of shadow material itself. But in theory wrapping a weapon in shadow should be as plausible. My initial concern would be if your particular abilities are purposely built these foes as opposed to generic shadow magic. If I manipulate the shadows instead of you than they may not be as potent to the Strix. But that is purely conjecture. I could attempt to enhance your connection to the shadows of Twilight, so you could potentially enhance your own weapons and abilities as a whole."
“ Only when it suits me ,”  she teases, rolling her eyes as soon as the practically-bumbling young man turned his focus back to Raziel. So is Khal the exception to the rule or him?  Of course with Raziel being kindred and… like that , she supposed the same could be asked of them two. Easy answer, actually. I’m ~exceptional~. With the two nerd’s attention quickly shifted back to whatever ritual they were working on, however, Aubrey was content to sit back and politely listen and smile. Even after spending time with Khal, she’d sparsely borne witness to any true magics, and with recent events casting aspersions on the Circle’s own practices, she was keen to see this through.
Focusing entirely on the magic of the young mage, Rae nods to Merric.  "Yes, that's what I had been considering. The shadows born of my Vitae or that of my grand-sire are the only weapons guaranteed to do the lethal harm, so far as I understand. Though I wouldn't discourage you from trying, should you ever find yourself facing one of these monsters. It's my hope that augmenting my shadows will mean augmenting my ability to enhance weapons."
"H-Heh heh"  Merric nervously replies to Aubrey. Returning to Rae, he listens intently and nods, "I understand. For now, I'll strengthen your bond. Then, we can see where we go from there." Setting up ample space in the room for his ritual, he lays down the candles Rae provided, and takes out small pouches he brought to draw magic symbols on the floor. He asks Rae,  "Could you please have a seat right there, just across from me?" He lights the candles and closes the curtains. "This will take a minute, please bear with me. Also, don't be scared." The ritual began.. The apartment was still. Blackout curtains sealed the room from the world outside, allowing only the flicker of several uneven black candles to define the space, their flames twitched not with the wind, but with unease. Merric sat cross-legged within a sigil etched in salt and charcoal, surrounded by a half-ritual circle stained with ash. At his wrist, a black-beaded bracelet, each rune carefully carved over weeks of intention, glinted dully, its leaden skull charm catching the candlelight like a dead star. Before him, the Soul Jar: a water bottle made makeshift-sacred, blotched with uneven streaks of ink,  symbols half-dissolved, scrawled in haste, containing the ghost of the vampire’s victim. The pale face within occasionally surfaced, lips frozen in an unheard scream, body shivering with a memory it could not forget. Merric inhaled deeply and began to speak, not in any human tongue, but in High Speech, the raw, primal language of the Supernal. " Ek’therun umbra noxi… Anima coniunx umbris… " As the chant took form, so too did the space around him. The air grew heavy. A subtle, clinging gravity seemed to settle in the corners of the room, like the moment before a confession or the hush before a storm. Shadows around Merric thickened, not moving, but watching. It was as if death itself had been invited in, politely, and accepted the offer with a quiet nod. The black wisps of his Nimbus began to bleed gently from his skin and sleeves, slow, ephemeral threads of darkness that drifted against gravity. They touched nothing and yet rested on everything.  The pressure of something unseen, ancient, and final spread through the room — not a scream, nor a whisper, but a statement. The weight of inevitability rested in the walls, the floorboards, and the dim flickering of each candle. " Oculum tenebrae exaudi… Fac meum verbum ligamen aeternum. " At the final word, the shadows gathered, not simply thickening, but drawing toward Rae with intent. They rose, wrapping around the base of the ritual circle, coiling upward, and then embracing the vampire, folding over shoulders, chest, and limbs in a soft, silent shroud. As they settled, the light of the candles dimmed, consumed by the shadows. Now extinguished, leaving only Merric’s silhouette and Rae’s outline bathed in shadow. The bracelet cooled against Merric’s skin. The ghost in the bottle stirred once, then stilled. The magic settled into the room like smoke in a cathedral. The spell was complete. "Phew..." Merric exhaled as his shoulders relaxed. "That's it. How do you feel?"

Rae narrows the entirety of her focus onto Merric, studying each indecipherable word, each gesture, and how the subtle forces of the room react to them. She is entranced as the young man seems to emanate a darkness that carried with it a promise of the end, an inescapable finality to all things. Remembering that this is the aura his magic always carries, she relaxes into the feeling and is rewarded with a sense of peace in acceptance of death. As the ritual continues, this sense grows in stature and severity while the shadows of the space grasp and claw their way towards her. Watching the young man at the center of this display is quite impressive, enshrouded by that which clearly recognizes him and bends to his strength. She is confident in her choice of magical compatriot as the shadows climb across her form. They pull and stretch her clothing in a manner that surprises her, having assumed that they would be as immaterial as the other shadows she had interacted with. These manifestations carry weight, a hessian pressure upon the mind that she imagines would chill the blood of a mortal if not harm them outright. In these moments she is suddenly overcome by that sacred, secreted-away place that has stowed away one of its many entrances within the mage's blood: The Eternal Grave . She decides on the name right then and there, that place visited in the recent past, that homecoming for the tenebrous projection of her soul.  So overcome is she in her reveling that she fails to notice that most of her body is now wrapped in the crawling shadows, bound as though in a straight jacket. In a fluid motion, the darkness wraps around her head and plunges her into the indistinct void she'd seen upon being born to shadows. In the blink of an eye, she then finds herself in the reed fields of the Eternal Grave, golden-yellow stalks swaying in a breeze she cannot feel. As with her first visit, there is a sense of intimacy in this place, an awareness reminiscent of one's childhood home. Several feet away stands an entity, a humanoid figure that looks to be have been carved from pure obsidian. Slowly, the black exterior recedes, revealing tan skin and curly hair atop an entirely ordinary human face. Her hair. Her face. The eyes are closed, the duplicate motionless with head angled upward. Its attention then snaps to her as the eyes open. There is no white to the eyes, merely dark pools without pupil or any other familiar feature. And in those eyes lie secrets and horrors that invite Rae into their depths, to drink deeply of them and become something altogether more terrifying. The field falls away, and all that is left is the duplicate, now towering over Rae like a mountain.  She simply opens her own eyes then, having returned to herself without fanfare. It takes her several moments to answer Merric's question. She takes in a breath and as she does, the darkness in her immediate space seems to swell and expand. With an exhale, the consolidated shadow seeps away into the respective corners it was drawn from. When she speaks, her voice has a tone to it that is very much unlike her, icy and uncanny. "Phenomenal. Amazing work, Merric."
Khalid rounds the corner, making his way back to Rae's. He takes two fingers to his neck, checking his pulse, he hade faith in the mudra of the Adamantine Arrow but old habits die hard. His muscles twitched and spasmed, near cramping in the areas he had not just exhausted, the buildup of energy was seeking an outlet and he had five to provide, he steps into the apartment. First he makes his way over to Rae and her companion, then Merric, meeting his fellow mage's eyes with a nod, and finally Aubrey where Khalid lingers for but a moment too long. A quick clap on each of their shoulders lifted a portion of the spell's burden. A jolt of energy sparking to his targets, their muscles involuntarily cramping but eventually settling to a casual warm limberness. "Should be set Rae, this'll last for a while but not forever. About a day as I mentioned before."  He looks over the room and its inhabitants, mentally preparing himself for what's to come.  "When do we leave?"
Rae smiles as Khalid provides the physical augmentations that are one of his specialties, the young mage's Nimbus a streak of lightning through the pervasive shadows created between Merric and herself throughout the room. The cramps are short-lived and followed by an immediate sense of power, leading her to stand and shake out her limbs. When the Life Mage declares his eagerness to get moving and face what lies ahead, she turns to answer him as she extends a hand out to Lyra to bring her to her feet.  "Thank you, Khalid. We'll be leaving now." She then raises her voice mildly to address everyone. "Please remember that this creature is not human and has never been such. It will seek to cause protracted suffering if and whenever it can. It will maim you, deceive you, addle your mind with its abilities. And it will savor ending you. Only sunlight, fire, and the weapons of the Khaibit, my bloodline, can truly destroy it. So if it hurts you, get to safety and try to hurt it back. My grand-sire and I will kill it."   Raziel then turns her full attention to Lyra, gently cupping her ghoul's face with her hands and speaking softly to her so that only she can hear the words clearly. "Beloved, I am going to ask you not to go with us. We will face other threats together, but this is one that poses too much danger to you. It may know where you live, so please stay with people you trust until I can tell you that things are done. If something feels off, you get out of there . You can probably handle anything short of a Kindred or Strix right now, so fight if there isn't a way out. But please stay safe, my dove."  She kisses Lyra slowly and deeply, wrapping her arms around the woman's waist. When they finally separate, Rae gently presses her forehead into Lyra's.  "I will come back to you."
