Dynamic lighting, Window is useless.

The window feature, while nice, is entirely useless for the singular, and only, use case it should have. Because the dynamic lighting layer now has [ Wall | One way | Transparent ] The use case of the window is now only useful as a Door. Why did no one on the dev team ever stop to think "Hey, we gave them a transparent wall, maybe we should give them a uh... something that goes from opaque, to transparent." Like seriously, the window has exactly ZERO use cases. It is entirely without use during game play, because if there are doors, ME, MYSELF & I, am the only one who can open doors as the GM. No one else can open Opaque sight blocking doors BUT ME THE GM. and those are the ONLY time you'd want to give the player any control over the Dynamic lighting. If I wanted there to be windows, I'd use [ One way ] or [ Transparent ] Dynamic lighting walls. If I wanted my players to be able to open anything, it would not be windows, IT WOULD BE DOORS! which need to be OPAQUE. Seriously, what were they thinking.
I agree - I'm not sure what the purpose of the Window feature is right now. As you are a Pro member, there is a way to allow PCs to open doors using a script. I did a video on this recently if you're interested: https://youtu.be/mdGQkkrz4XM -Adam

Hi Hogfather* User controlled doors are coming. The Windows were just deployed first. Windows are a transparent barrier that users can open or close (Pro or Plus). When doors are deployed, they will be an opaque barrier that users can open or close . I'm not sure I understand the issue. A closed window on the VTT is like a closed window IRL, you can see through it, but not pass through it unless you open it. A shuttered window would be opaque, but not a closed one. *I have been good all year and will leave out a pork pie and sherry, plus some turnips for Gouger, Rooter, Tusker and Snouter.

I think what he is saying is that you can already create a window using a transparent or one-way dynamic lighting line. If it is transparent, there is no need to open it (as the reason for opening it would be to see out of it.) With this in mind, the new Windows feature doesn't add any functionality that we didn't already have available to us. Doors being released will likely receive a much more positive reception as it fills a need that other VTTs already provide without needing to use API scripts. -Adam

But if doorknocker is newer, even updated as of 2 days ago if the videos update time suggests, than it's definitely in my list now.

DoorKnocker has been around for a while now. You can find the original DoorKnocker thread here: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/7698809/script-door-knocker/?pagenum=1 The latest can be found here: https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/11136573/slug%7D#post-11193250 When Roll20 switched their color-selection method it did "break" DoorKnocker for a period of time. Scott C (creator of DoorKnocker) did some updates to the script to fix the issue. In the past you did not need to use the adapt command, so it is a few extra steps now, but overall worth it if doors being opened by players is important to your game. -Adam
The new window feature may be useful for some games. I'm glad for those players and GMs to have that option now. I won't be using it. Having the option to enable/disable player-interactive windows would be nice if it continues to impact VTT performance. I personally don't want players to be able to freely interact with door OR windows, but I like the idea of a way for me as GM/DM to quickly allow/disallow access through a door or window. I've been using DoorKnocker for this and it worked great until the color-selection change. It's now still unreliable even after I applied Scott C's fix, but when it works it beats having to do the "switch-to-DL-layer, move the door/window out of the way, switch back to token layer" dance.

Hey Rick, Did you use the adapt command for DoorKnocker to have the different color lines recognized by the script? Ever since I did that, I have been using DoorKnocker regularly twice/week. There was a couple of times where I had to re-run the adapt command at the beginning of a session, but it applies to all doors in the campaign and only takes seconds to run, so I find it worth it even when that happens. The video I did (linked above) walks through the process of the adapt command and I added the text of the adapt command to the video comments as well to hopefully make it easy on people wanting to use that feature. -Adam
