Hello folks.. I'll start off with the first major points. If this doesn't work for you, no problem. Find a game you like, join and and fun! 1) Sandbox, not train. I've been working for awhile setting up an entire world - continents, cities, towns, etc. I never planned to make it 'Game specific' (5E, 1E, Pathfinder, etc). I've played/ran games since the 70's, and know what I like and don't like. A Sandbox game lets the players decide what THEY want to do, where THEY want to go.. ie, let's them ROLEPLAY, which is kinda the purpose of the game. If you want to actually roleplay your character and make decisions that affect where/what/how things are done, this is it. If you aren't into roleplaying this won't be a game for you.. and on to 2) Homebrew, not 5E. D&D has changed so much since the early days, and most of the changes are not good (and that's without ever going into the stuff going on now with Hasbro corporate that has the D&D world in a tizzy!). major issues I have a) hitpoints too low for characters, b) magic system (ie, slots, etc) is assinine and I never use it, c) 459 different player races - sure, it's fun to play a lesser demon as a character, but how exactly do you think that would work in a 'real' world setup? specifics - Hitpoints - This goes along with my biggest pet peeve - throw a monster at a group, and 1/2 way into the battle some rules lawyer pops in and says 'he's dead - monster manual 42 says he only has xx hitpoints'.. I don't tolerate rules lawyers. mainly because I don't buy every single book WoTC trots out with 1 new monster, 1 new item, a next-to-useless adventure and a $50 price tag. Example - Pee Wee Herman and 80's era Arnold Swarzeneggar are both humans - are you going tell me they would take the same damage before dying (ignoring crititcal hits, of course). Same for monsters. I use monsters from many providers, as well as my background loving horror-sci-fi films. I know how many hit points they have. If a magic user has the right spell, and chooses to use it, he/she would know.. but I want this to be as reaslistic as a silly game like this can be. You don't KNOW how many hitpoints it has. As for characters, 1st level start out WAY too low - No specifics yet, but would expect a basic 20 minimum/50 maximum. My world is big, and not particulary friendly in some spots. No telling which way party will go, so don't want a total party kill (tpk) the first session. Magic - As stated, the 'magic slots' crap has ALWAYS been a non-starter with me. I get it, the idea is to limit their power. No need. Magic (in my world at least) has 3 components to EVERY spell - Verbal, items, and somatic (hand motions) (which means you can't play a ghost magic user - no hands). Doing all this, while trying to read a spell out of a book, is NOT an easy thing to do. you might be able to memorize a simple spell for use later that day, but the book is important in this game. Magic users would do VERY well to hire a lackey or 3 to join them to assist in handing the book during spell casting. Details will be more when a spell caster/s are cast Species that are playable - Human, Elf, Half-Orc, Dwarf, halfling.. You'd have to give me a very good argument as to playing anything else. I'm not a fan of the characters that are created to give a special power out of the box, etc. Keep in mind you are in a 'common' world with a lot of 'uncommon' areas (both beneath the sea and in the sky).. species playabe are kept to a minimum to allow general use throughout the world and so no party is kicked out of town because species xxx is not allowed. Sure it creates a story opportuniy, but i'm not shy of story ideas, so want to keep the party together to grow as a group. Professions - MUCH more open here. Lot of flavors of cleric, fighter, etc, through the years. I'm open to pretty much any, though since this is a homebrew, there will be tweaking of the source material to fit my world. Well, that's all the basic stuff I can think of. As stated, I'm still working on this, and be prepared that this game might simply be ran on Discord - if the OGL stuff makes anything done here on Roll20 the property of Hasbro, I am not giving them the world I'm creating, so it will be more oldschool. so get your graph paper and pencils ready .. I can easily share handouts and maps there, so battles will the only place graph paper will be needed. HOpefully, with the Hasbro stock diving like it has today, Hasbro will backoff the OGL upgrade. If it costs them money, they won't do it - and so many people cancelling D&D Beyond subscriptions that they artificially inserted an error so it can't be done, I'm sure their bean counters are looking it over Regardless, either with Discord and Roll 20, or Discord only, this game will start in 6-8 weeks. Expect Sunday afternoon/evening, 4-5 hour sessions, I'm based in US Central time zone, so think like 5-9, 5-10pm. If interested, don't respond here, I won't be monitoring this thread. Email me at jallan7982@yahoo.com. I'll be happy to discuss with anybody interested. No rules lawyers, new players welcome, experienced players welcome - but above all - be a roleplayer!
