Server Backups / Worries

Ok, This is just me being paranoid or worried. I've been a long time DM. Put thousands of hours into my homebrew campaign. It's my baby. I know I can copy the game, but does roll20 keep database backups of our games? Or what if, roll20 dies, is there a plan to transfer this data to a different platform? I'm fairly certain if I lost my campaign i would never play D&D again. Thanks for your time, Blood-Lord

Roll20 does keep backups. Even a deleted game may be recoverable if the devs are alerted quickly enough. My suggestion is also to do a regular backup of your campaign yourself. I make a copy of mine every 6 months to a year, as well as managing a  Library Campaign . As for what to do if Roll20 itself closes shop, I can't answer to that; I have no idea. I do know that it is not likely to happen any time in the foreseeable future. Roll20 is the largest VTT on the market, by a huge margin.

Just a note, make sure you don't put all your homebrew stuff into one campaign (game). If duplicating the game becomes difficult from large size you may want to split up the contents of the game across multiple games. Some folks who have rather large games split the game up and then port the information in via the Transmogrifier (a Pro feature) or move NPCs/Monsters around via the Character Vault (or now Roll20 Characters).

Lmao, I'd be completely shattered if it was deleted. I do keep copies of it just in case. Gauss said: ... Is there a limit to how big a game can be? Or does it impact performance on the PC / laptop that launches the game? I've been subscribed to the plus version most of this time. I know some of the cool features of the Pro subscription.

My understanding is that once a game hits a certain size there are a number of potential problems that may occur. How big is too big? Usually that is discovered when duplicating a game runs into trouble. Keith may have a better idea of what a large campaign looks like.  As for impacting a PC/laptop, it shouldn't due to the lazy loading update a couple years back.

Roll20 is continually improving things on that end. I have been told by at least one dev that my home game is one of the largest they've encountered. Others say it's big, but not especially so. I don't think there is any kind of guideline. At one point in its history, it would time out while trying to make a copy. At another, I lost nearly a month's work from a failed rollback. That was years ago. I have not run into any such problems recently, and I'm sure the game has only grown.
