Journal items missing

I'm preparing to run three of the "A" series AD&D modules (Slave Pits of the Undercity, Secret of the Slavers' Stockade, and Assault on the Aerie of the Slave Lords) that I'm converting to 5e. Many of the monsters and all of the major NPCs have to be entered into the Journal manually. I logged in tonight to work on adding more monsters to the Journal only to find that about half of what I'd already entered is missing. Hours and hours of work is now gone. Is there a fix? Do I dare re-enter the data and hope it doesn't disappear again?

Hi Mike P., There are a few possibilities here. 1) There is something entered in the search bar of the Journal tab. Please make sure that the search bar is empty. 2) You were not connected to Roll20 while you were entering the data. But there should be a red banner will be in the VTT telling you that the connection has a problem. 3) There was a data loss, in which case your best bet is to contact the Roll20 staff and see if they can recover the data. You can do that via the Help Center .
I have entirely custom scratch-built campaign, and half the NPCs are now missing. May not be a localized issue.

Can confirm. Looks like a random selection of NPCs and monsters in my own campaign, almost entirely creatures I added to the campaign (versus pulling from the Compendium)
Just checked it again and the missing NPCs/monsters are back.

Mike, sounds good, might have been a hiccup on the Roll20 side of things. Joseph Carriker and Dio G., can you please check your games to see if the journal entries are back?

Everyone, is this a regular Roll20 game or a Jumpgate game? Another question, would any of you happen to be using Better20's import tool?

I think it may just be a connectivity issue on roll20's side in some way. A game I'm a player in took me several page loads to get my character sheet. First time the journal was entirely empty, second time my sheet was blank, third time my sheet was missing again but others were present, and fourth time it got my sheet and its data.

Ran into this same problem. When the characters eventually returned, they were all listed in alphabetical order at the end of my journal, instead of the folders they were meant to be in. All 242 of them. There was no apparent rhyme or reason to which characters went on vacation.
I just lost a bunch of work I did yesterday, and had more vanish right before my eyes. Each time I opened a character's sheet or double clicked their token, they vanished.

Same issue as those above, So I logged in today to add some journal character stat blocks for my upcoming game on Sunday. When I went to add them, I noticed that my folders were emptier than normal. Scrolling down I could see a huge mess of junked characters taken out of different folder, just placed in alphabetical order. This is likely 100+ character sheets. I sent a helpdesk ticket to see what the cause/resolution to this was. I was sent a reply that stated the following; “Hello, Thank you for reaching out and sorry for the trouble! Taking a look into this from our end, this issue seems to have been caused by an issue introduced by a 3rd party extension. As a result we can only recommend utilizing a Pro subscription in order to use the Rollbacks feature. Our system also only stores rollback save points for 7 days. For more information or help with rollbacks please visit our Help Center.” So because of a third party application, Beyond20, they suggest I up my subscription payment to fix the issue. Has anyone experienced this bug, or response before? Thanks

UPDATE This issue has been resolved. Please see full post below. https://app.roll20.net/forum/post/11977191/journal-items-missing/?pageforid=11978102#post-11978102 The post below has been edited to reflect more accurate information. Hey folks! Really sorry to hear that this issue is happening! We've been investigating affected games and our discoveries have pointed to majority of these issues being caused by a 3rd Party extension. CLARIFICATION: This issue in particular was not caused by an extension, but rather more likely to encounter and trigger the root cause due to extension behavior. Extensions in general are not advised to be enabled while using Roll20. They can interfere with performance at best and corrupt or destroy game data at worst. If you are encountering this issue, we can take a look, just reach out to Roll20.net/help and our support team may be able to assist further. For those who have a Pro subscription, we advise making a copy of the game and then performing a Rollback in order to recover any lost information or organization.

All my missing character sheets have returned - thank you!
Can I get some specificities of how the third-part application affects the things I input into the game. If it were to affect DnDBeyond the same way, I’d be quite shocked. I’ve not been offered really any assistance to my issue and it’s just a little bit sad to me, that I’ve been told to up my subscription to fix the current issue. I hope you can see my point of view.

Hi Jordan, Some extensions can dig quite deeply into Roll20's data structure, this is the fault of the extension, not Roll20. Imagine it this way, you tell someone to go rearrange your house and put new furniture in. Instead they go in and steal everything. Is it the house's fault? Similarly, if someone has an extension that is making alterations to Roll20, it could then damage Roll20. We are regularly told not to use extensions with Roll20, this is why.
Thanks for the feedback. I have disabled the extension. How can I fix my folders, if possible?

Reading around the Community Forum, though, some people reported that the problem fixed itself, after just waiting and then refreshing. I would not hurry to do a Rollback (since you would lose any work done after the Rollback point) unless you immediately needed to get the game back to normal. It could be effective to wait a while, and try again with Refresh, to see if the Journal items got sorted back into normal place. The 3rd Party extensions also may not be a problem --- even if it is to-blame --- as long as it became Fixed and everything returned to normal.
Is this any third-party browser extension that can cause this? Or just those that directly meddle with Roll 20? I don't use any Roll 20 extensions like Beyond 20 or anything, but the folder mishap just happened to me. I do of course have various other general extensions (uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger, etc.).

Hi Jonathan, (I feel we just had this conversation in Reddit?) Any extension can cause issues with Roll20, but this is suspected to be one specific extension. If you are not using an extension you feel is at cause please file a bug report with the Devs via the Help Center . They can take a look to see what may be going on.

This problem occurred in my game today while I was working in it . I had edited some NPC character sheets and added a few handouts, then transmogrified the new stuff to my library game. I then exited the game to go to my library game in order to put the transferred material into the proper journal folders and saw all that all of the NPC tokens had been dumped down below my folder structure. When I then went back to the "working" game I saw that the same thing has happened. I checked the backup of my game that I created after the last session and it looked as it should, but what stops this from now happening to my backups? I tried logging out of Roll20, clearing cache and disabling all three of the extensions that I use ( Malwarebytes, Dashlane and Stylus ) but this had no affect on the "broken" games. I've been using the Malwarebytes and Dashlane extensions for the entire time that I've been using Roll20, and I've been using Stylus for several months. I could give up Stylus (reluctantly) but I'm not giving up my anti-malware and password manager. In addition to this post, I'm also filing a report via the help center.
Tokens dumped out of their folders into one giant blob in alphabetical order... Please help I keep refreshing...and waiting...been 36 hours...still a problem

IDK if this will work for everyone, but users in other posts have reported the problem was fixed by waiting and reloading, so that is certainly what I'd try first, if you can spare the time to wait and see: Groudon466 said: UPDATE: The problem has magically resolved itself, thankfully! The scattered blocks even arranged themselves back into their folders! Mike P. said: Just checked it again and the missing NPCs/monsters are back. Joseph Carriker said: All my missing character sheets have returned - thank you!
I am experiencing the same problem - all of the NPCs I created this week are just gone. Is this part of the Microsoft/ Crowdsource problem?
An update on my situation, A member of the team got in touch with me again, a helpful person called Miles. Managed to arrange for me to be able to rollback the game (creating a backup just in case). I rolled it back one day (18-07-2024), and this worked straight away. Still not sure on the specific cause, but can narrow down the timeframe it occurred at least. I am now a happy DM once again. I hope all others affected have their cases resolved also. Best of luck!
This may be the same issue: I have been working on a dungeon since early this morning, I shut it down and went to lunch. An hour later when I returned all the edits I have made were gone. Very frustrating. My games are now unplayable. :-(
Hey everyone, I wanted to come back to this with an update on this situation with what should be some good news-- We've located the root cause of this issue and a fix should be live now. Some important information first: If you were impacted by this problem (i.e. folder structure broke) please reach out as soon as possible to help.roll20.net to send in a support ticket and our staff will assist. Rollbacks only go back 7 days so beyond that we may not be able to assist. Due to the nature of this issue and the fact it impacted journals, this fix is not retroactive If you are a Pro user you can already use the Rollback tool. I recommend making a copy of the game first then performing a rollback on the affected game. Rollbacks are not a guaranteed fix. Some games may be too large for the rollback tool to function. Our support team will continue to try to assist, but this is primarily due to hard limits by Firebase and is out of our control at this point in time. Now for some more details. This issue was a doozy. The extension aspect of this problem as we found with more reports was a red herring. So I want to extend my apologies for any confusion on that matter this may have caused. I will reiterate that extensions are not recommended at this time because they can cause issues that we are unable to resolve and can introduce performance or data problems in games. This particular issue was difficult to replicate as the requirements are very system and time dependent. This was to such an extent that extensions were actually perfectly positioned to reliably trigger this issue due to the speed at which they operate. However, thanks to the follow up reports and information provided here and by those who wrote in we were able to discern that our initial hypothesis was incorrect and we began working towards finding that root cause. We will be following up shortly with those who have already written in to inform on the situation and provide an update in addition to assisting with Rollbacks where necessary. Thank you again everyone, genuinely, for continuing to raise your concerns and voice the issues you were facing. This information and that submitted via support tickets is absolutely vital for us to track down these tough issues and get them fixed quickly. Again if you were impacted by this issue, please contact our support team at help.roll20.net so we can help get you taken care of quickly!
Do we know what extension? I don't use one or anything that I know of. I have already rolled back to the date of the last game I remembered having everything so I got my sheets back but I would like to avoid it for the future.
