Dynamic Lighting Sources and Player Visibility

My GM wants to make a general splash screen for players to use, and he wants to keep specific information on the splash screen for them. However, this information should not be revealed to other players. The top half of the page is visible to everyone, accomplished by putting a token on the dynamic lighting layer and giving it a light range of 5000 ft, and checking the "All Players See Light" box. The bottom half of the page is divided into six horizontal segments, with a single player's token in each segment. I then placed tokens on the Dynamic Lighting Layer, gave the players control over their respective lighting tokens in their row, and set the light radius to 5000ft as well. I also put up dividers on the dynamic lighting layer so each player could only see their row, and not into the rows of the other players. The problem I have is that when I log onto the page as a player, I can only see the top half of the page. I can't see my own row. Any ideas where I went wrong?

Did you make sure to include yourself in the permissions on your row lighting? Just go back over your settings and examine them again. I haven't played with DL for a year or more so I can't remember clearly what all the check marks you need to make sure is done but just go over your settings one at a time. Sorry I can't be of more help.

Oh, here is the dynamic lighting wiki page if you haven't read it: <a href="https://wiki.roll20.net/Dynamic_Lighting" rel="nofollow">https://wiki.roll20.net/Dynamic_Lighting</a>
I read it... but the only way I found to make the row visible is to either 1) Move the token onto the token layer, allowing the controlling player to move it and see everyone else's information, which defeats the purpose. -or- 2) Check the "All Players Can See Light", which also defeats the purpose.

hmmm, stumped as well right now. Let me think about it. Maybe someone else will drop by and toss in their coins on this matter.

#1 shouldn't happen, because players can only see the light they control. So if you have Bill and Bob in the same area, but only Bob can 'see' the light for that area, Bill won't see anything. Players moving their pogs around is a different issue. You shouldn't need to try #2. I'm betting problem is there's no tokens for the players to control on the token layer, so they don't get to see their own rows.
#1 happens because players have to be able to control lights in order to be the only people who can see the lights, and putting the lights on any layer EXCEPT the token layer makes the light invisible to the would-be controlling player. Every combination of tokens, lights, and layers I have tried has resulted in either option 1, option 2, or option 3 (nobody can see anything).

Please send me a join link and I will come take a look at your setup.
Here's what you want to do: Make a new token, one controlled by each player that isn't their character token. You then give this token a light radius only visible to the player, not to everyone, and turn off the light emitted by their actual character token. Put those tokens in the horizontal boxes with their player tokens. This way, the players can only see the light in the box they were assigned, because only that one will have the token they control in it, meaning only the light from the token they control will be visible to them. You can probably even put those light tokens on the Dynamic Lighting layer, though I'm not 100% sure.
I'd put them on the Map layer and send to the back.

Charles H. said: I read it... but the only way I found to make the row visible is to either 1) Move the token onto the token layer, allowing the controlling player to move it and see everyone else's information, which defeats the purpose. There has been a previous Suggestion thread for a setting: "Player can edit & view their token, but cannot move it". Such a setting does not currently exist here, so like you said, putting their token on the token layer and giving them Edit control would also allow them to move the token.

The problem is that while light sources can be placed on the Map and DL layers they only work for "all players" and not for "controlled by". Since Charles's GM is a Mentor he is going to use the API script that locks tokens from movement and place the "controlled by" light sources on the token layer.
Yeah, that was what I wasn't sure about, the part about token control extending to the Map/DL layer. Honestly, I wouldn't even use a lock script, I would just assume my players were capable of not cheating by logging in and checking out other people's info. But if the script works, I suppose it's a valid option. Still, I think my suggestion should work otherwise.
