Meanwhile, the UNSC expanded into uncharted space, leveraging the Interstellar Manufacturing Corporation (IMC) to spearhead its colonial ambitions through a lucrative contract. The IMC, granted dominion over these regions, encroached upon established worlds, imposing harsh control and forcing compliance. This sparked rebellion in the outer reaches, uniting criminals, farmers, mercenaries, and others under the banner of the Frontier Militia.
On the backwater world of New Hope, a UNSC medical researcher experimented with gene therapy to enhance miners' resilience to the planet's grueling conditions. Initially, the treatments succeeded—miners developed tougher skin and could toil for hours. However, the population, predominantly miners, began to undergo horrific transformations, wreaking havoc across the planet. The region was abandoned, left as a cautionary tale.
Near New Hope, the UNSC attempted to replicate the Imperium's forge worlds with moderate success. However, the AI tasked with managing the operation turned rogue for unknown reasons, attacking anyone who ventured into its domain.
