Unlimited Drag and Drop

I recently switched to Jump Gate and my players have discovered that they can now drag-and-drop multiple copies of their characters onto the table top. I run old-school D&D and I do not use actual characters sheets. The players are just assigned a character in the journal, with a token attached to it. Before I switched to Jump Gate, only I as the DM could drag and drop their token onto the table top. But now they can do it themselves, as many times as they want. Surely there must be some way to disable this?

Hi Brett,  The statement below is not correct. In Legacy Roll20 players can drag their characters to the table, repeatedly. It has been that way for as long as I can remember.  The only way to prevent it is to not assign them control over their character. Personally, I'd just ask them not to do it.  Brett said: Before I switched to Jump Gate, only I as the DM could drag and drop their token onto the table top. A couple of suggestions.  You can't prevent this behavior mechanically, but putting everyone in a playpen (A map that isn't a normal battle map) between adventures where they can drag as many tokens on as they like and graffiti up the place may get some of that novelty out. A playpen lets them mess around until folks are ready to play. One playpen I had included teleport pads and things for them to draw on so they could fiddle around and get that nervous energy out.
I feel confident in saying that it was not always possible for players to be able to drag their own characters onto the map. If it were, my players would have discovered it 10 years ago. Instead, I believe that it was not possible in Roll20's earliest days, my players learned that, and thus never tried. Until last game night, when they were browsing around the new Jump Gate environment.

I can confirm Gauss' statement that this has was (and still is) possible in the pre-Jumpgate classic VTT. I don't know if it's been possible since the beginning of Roll20, but it' been possible for as long as I can remember. It is a feature that has long been used to allow players to access and place spell template graphics linked to character sheets.

I'll echo what Gauss' and Keith have said. I've been using Roll20 since July of 2020 and have as a player always been able to drag duplicates of characters for which I've been given control from the journal to the VTT. In my game I've created spell templates and given control of certain NPCs (i.e., familiars) to the players and they have always been able to drag multiple copies to the VTT, even before Jumpgate. Edit: There is one new thing though: Until very recently, in order to drag a token onto the VTT, you had to select the name and not just the image in the journal; now you can select either the name or the image.

That  is  a recent change, and a welcome one. I no longer have to help new users learn the difference between "dragging by the name" and "dragging by the handle". It's now just "drag from anywhere to where you want it to be."
