New D&D 5e OGL Character Sheet

Hey everyone, we’re dropping by to show you something we’ve been cooking up for a while here at Polyhedral Tools. As the title implies, this is a redesign and complete rebuild of the Legacy D&amp;D Sheet. We tried to keep our design as close as possible to the original work that made the sheet so loved by players, while adding a bunch of new features made possible by Roll20’s Beacon framework. Polyhedral Tools is composed of two forever GMs who've been obsessed with D&amp;D for over a decade and decided to do something about the tools they wished existed. Miguel is an interaction designer and creative coder who spent years at Roll20, where he was responsible for the D&amp;D 2014 character sheet. Jorge is a computer engineer who followed his passion into freelancing, building Roll20 character sheets full-time. We clicked while collaborating on a project together and realized we shared the same vision. So we teamed up and Polyhedral Tools was born. The character sheet is still in closed alpha and available to our Patreon users. It will be made available to the public once it reaches version 1.0. To get a showcase of the current state of the sheet, drop by our YouTube channel: <a href="https://youtu.be/9hoy0Qa4BBc" rel="nofollow">https://youtu.be/9hoy0Qa4BBc</a> If you want to help the project and be part of our closed alpha, head to our Patreon page: <a href="https://patreon.polyhedral.tools/" rel="nofollow">https://patreon.polyhedral.tools/</a>
Redesigning the legacy character sheet must be a tough balance of keeping it familiar to the OGs while keeping it fresh. For those getting into the closed alpha, what kind of feedback are you guys looking for at this stage? Bug reports, UX impressions, edge cases in very specific interactions? Looks interesting, keep it up!
Hey Nuno, thanks for the interest. We definitely wanted capture the classic visual style of the legacy sheet, and make sure that we are able to preserve what made the original sheet great, while enhancing it with new features. For the closed alpha, we have a few main features that we want to get tested and implemented before the public release, which user feedback would be very helpful for. Fine-tuning the DnD 5e compendium compatibility. The current version of the sheet has fairly good support for dropping official DnD 5e content due to a sort of translation layer we implemented on the sheet to convert the typical DnD 5e formatting to the data structure of our sheet. But probably a lot of edge cases slipped through so we want to stress-test and improve this feature. DnD 2014 Character Migration. We want to make sure that when the sheet becomes public, anyone can change the sheet in their own campaigns using the 2014 sheet without losing the existing data that they have stored on PCs and NPCs. We know it's definitely possible to grab the attributes of the character sheet when changing the sheet to beacon, so we just have to make sure that the migration algorithm we would implement works as intended. Theming Configuration. Another feature that we want to release is the capability to change general styling values of the sheet, like changing the main and secondary theme colors, change text sizing, etc... Nothing particularly complex initially but enough for users to make some cool adjustments for their own campaign. Ideally this would be able to be done on a per sheet, and per campaign basis (By checking the character sheet settings inside the game). General UX improvements and bug fixing. Throughout the development we have fixed quite a lot of bugs and iteratively improved the sheet, but we haven't yet had enough playtesters to check if our sheet is ideal for the average user experience when playing and running a game. We added some extensive unit testing coverage on the game to keep the sheet robust against bugs, but it's inevitably that some slipped through due to the sheer scope of the sheet. So a big focus in this phase is to tackle any glaring bug or UX detriment that slipped through the cracks. Compatibility with macros and API scripts of the 2014 character sheet. This won't be an easy one to implement, but we want the sheet to also be a good option for advanced users that are fans of that kind of automation. We already managed to expose some essential attributes for macros so it definitely will be possible to add a compatibility layer for this, like we added compatibility with the DnD compendium data structure. We are launching a public Trello within the next few days so the sheet development is transparent to anyone who is interested in following our progress.
