Stats : Lareth: AC -1 (plate mail + 1); Level 5 Cleric; hp 44; #AT 1; D 1-6 (mace) or 4-9 (or more, from staff of striking-, 20 charges remain); SA spells (see below); SD immune to paralysis (phylactery of action); XP 770 (Of course 1979 was a long time ago, he is sure to have leveled a bit.)

In the first tier (levels 1-4) The threats they face are relatively minor, usually posing a danger to local farmsteads or villages. In the second tier (levels 5-10) These characters have become important, facing dangers that threaten cities and kingdoms. And the high level NPCs are gone... dead... out of the way... lots of room at the top. But that also means players now drive the story more and the threats become more focused on the players.
