LFG I'm thinking... 1960s, 1970s zombie apocalypse.

What do you think? I want something "low" tech because in on game I was in, the GM was doing a modern campaign, using a real town in Britain. Sad to say we had a guy constantly power gaming by going on Google maps, finding out what street we were on and where to go because "his character was a doctor, and his patients had told him about these places." Happened each session we had. Cell phones, would be extremely clunky and rare and really limited in their use. Flashlights instead of cellphones, and actual maps that can be modern or a few years old available! Back when gas was cheap and soda pop even cheaper. I'm not up for DMing it, but certainly would be a player for it if it didn't land on a Friday or Saturday.

I think that's more your GM's error. I've run modern zombie campaigns and never had these issues. Sure, there's advanced tech. Electricity would realistically last for a little bit. To use technology, it takes more time that you have. If you plan beforehand, sure that's okay. You could do that in the 70s. There were maps and the yellow pages. If I want to find out where a gun store is. It takes me about two minutes. Those two minutes could be life or death, at least, if I'm the GM. That's on WiFi as well. Try it on 3G, with zombies, and low power. I remember being in downtown Manhattan trying to find directions and that taking about ten minutes. I have the old iPhone 4, though. That is if this is all still up. Going off from what's here , " The core systems of those infrastructures are under supervision pretty much 24/7. There are always issues that need to be addressed and maintenance that needs to be done regardless of all redundancy. " All these factors dependent on the world and how it's collapsed. Which, again, all comes down to the GM. I don't like setting the game right when the apocalypse is happening anyway. Somehow you're in it, deal with it. /rant. I'd GM! I already have a player from another game interested in me running zombie campaign. So that makes two? EDIT : Finding information is easy. Finding correct and useful information is difficult. Also consider that Internet is not always as helpful as expected. Most of the time the popular results show up. If they're popular, they're likely picked over. I've found the Average Joe is rather bad at finding stuff on the internet, anyway.
I'm up for some zombie action, be it modern or 60's. free most nights. Send me a pm and i can toss you my skype.
As a GM I would have "mixed things up" a bit compared to what Google Maps could tell the player. Easiest way is to use the town or area you want and simply rename it so the players have no idea where to look.
I agree. I either do one of two extremes: characters end up in a big city or in the middle of nowhere. I am in no way worried about using a phone's GPS in a big city. Why? Player: "Can I use my GPS to see where a gun store is?" Me: Sure, roll something. Player: "Woo! There's a gun store two streets over." They get there. Four options. Picked Over/Looted, Currently in the process of being looted, infested with zomps, or it's been destroyed. Rarely will anything be miraculously pristine. The characters just spent a good amount of time and effort to get somewhere. The two aspects of horror I love the most, the unknown and dread. I like creating new places for people to explore, though. Like Geoff said. On the otherhand, I like having Google Maps as a GM. It's a map. I can screenshot where they are if I need to and share it. Like I said and Jon backed me up: Most tech fails— quickly. The idea I have in mind has you isolated from the world, but at game start you have to venture back in. So, maybe up to two weeks to month after the apocalypse.
What system would be best? I've played Savage Worlds with the last campaign based on a Z apocalypse? I'd prefer the players to have more "casual jobs" You won't be a doctor of any kind, or have military/police training for any reason. (Perhaps a cadet for the police force would be the exception.) I find that it is more fun for character development for someone in the party to learn how to stitch up wounds and how to make improvised bandages. Who's going to tell the story of Garrick, the server from Denny's?
