Colour fill by grid square/hex

Rather than simply using the shape tool or trying to follow hex grid lines with freehand, maybe a way to colour a square or hex with a simple fill colour tool? Even in-game, it could be used to clearly mark an area affected by a multi-turn duration effect without having to change map entirely or bring in a sprite that may not match up with what you're trying to represent. It just feels like something missing from the existing drawing tools.
