Why does nobody play 5E?

I live 45~ minutes out from any major city, so I don't want to commute to play DnD... so right now I opt for online stuff. When I search for 5e though I barely see any campaigns, and if I do see any openings it's for some highly altered version of 5e.

Just be patient and keep looking. Keep an eye on the Looking for Group forum as well as doing regular game directory searches. It was via the LFG forum I found my 5e game. It's the new hotness, so rest assured there's people running games, both now and in the future as more people get their hands on the books.

in the most recent report from Roll20 as reported below.... 5E is rising in popularity on here. Out of a sample size of 25,000 games, there were more than 5200 games playing 5E on this site (20%), representing some thousands of 5E players. So there's hope. By the way, the Games that you tick-mark on your Profile, go into the count for these surveys they are doing on the amount of people interested in each game system. So be sure to fill that in on your page. :) Here is the report on those numbers, http://irontavern.com/2015/01/08/orr-group-report-q4-2014/

Bugbear, there are usually a dozen or more 5e games recruiting in the LFG forums. Give it time and there will be some popping up. If you are not wanting to wait, you can always start a campaign.
Because 5e seems to look like 3e with 100 pages of errata, and a lot of regression from the changes 4e made, and the 3e players dislike a lot of the changes 5e made in its scaling and modify it to their whims, and several 4e (me included) players hate it to hell and back for bringing back archaic things that should've stayed dead and buried (which gets grognards up in arms for petty reasons) while others take issue with To Hit bonuses being a big deal. tl;dr: Edition differences driving people away from it.
I just started a new 5E campaign the other day if you don't mind playing a Rogue. I never played it before and giving it a shot with something crazy. Personally, I found the same thing when I originally looked for a game. So, I just started my own regardless of the favortism towards other sets.
Although mine are closed im in two games that started last week. I run one and play in the other. I recruited like 5 friends to play who had never heard of roll20. Two have bought the phb and another has subscribed to roll20. Talk to your old buddies from high school, college etc. You're sure to get a game rolling. i think most people play the other editions because 5e is new. There isnt much material and with each edition having so many choices each edition lasts far longer than a new roll out. Lots still play AD&D.
