Brand new player looking for group and overall help

Hello, I am interested in trying out a tabletop game for my first time. I have read a bit about D&D 3.5 from a PDF I found online; but, I am still unsure about creating a character sheet and the overall rules. If anyone would be able to point me in the right direction or is willing to having me in the group, despite very little knowledge of tabletops, it would be appreciated.
